Title: Chilliwack River, March 26th 2009: Lucky again
Post by: Every Day on March 26, 2009, 11:55:10 PM
Was really anxious to go out again today after getting lucky on Tuesday. Stopped in at Fred's after school to pick up some worms and gooey bobs assuming vis would be terrible again. Got out there and it was perfect, around 2 feet visability in the lower.

Initially I had planned to fish with 2 friends. I get the phone call at around 1:50 that Clayton can't make it out as his radiator went on his truck  ::) O well, get to fish alone till 2:30 until school gets out and Jared meets me. Start working the 3 runs above where I got my fish yesterday and there isn't any love for me today. Short floating roe has been doing very well lately. I talk with one other guy fishing the run where I got mine yesterday and he says nothing. Just after talking with him I get hit in the back... with my friend's fishing rod  ::)

We decide to go up to the mid to try and track down the school I hit on Tuesday (assuming there was one). We arrive at around 3 and work our way down to the second car. After fishing a few runs that I figured would be ideal holding water, me and Jared are both getting really restless. Jared is now to the point where he wants to leave and has his rod packed up. I tell him to let me fish these last 3 runs "quickly" and then we can leave.

I ended up fishing the first 2 very fast and start getting down to another area. A nice slot with a tree on one side, perfect. I tell Jared "I bet there is a fish right..... AAA!" My float comes flying back at me, a huge hit that I felt right to the cork of my rod. I swear I have never seen anyone put a rod together and start fishing again that fast, faster than I could get on another piece of roe.

Jared casts in and his roe hits a swirly spot and comes up to the top, FOLLOWED BY A FISH! Now Im really pumped. I cast again, same spot float down again, hard hook-set, NOTHING! I wonder how this could be possible. Jared says the one he saw was only looking to be 5 or so pounds.... maybe a trout that is just stripping our bait  ???
Jared now goes though again while Im putting on more roe, he gets a solid hit, again NOTHING! Im getting pissed now, hoping it will come back. Again, right in the middle of the slot I get a hit, I pull again right away, and one more time come up empty.

Jared starts casting again while I put on more roe. He doesn't get anything, and I start to think we have missed our chance now. My first cast back in though, WHAM, again float down. This time i let it hang underwater 2 full seconds and set the hook - Hard. This time solid weight and a couple jumps. Jared starts filming and 2 mins later I glide the fish into the shallows. Its a very nice hatchery buck, that I contemplate on releasing, but my friend won't have any of that.

Guess I got a good hook-set eh  ;D

Nice chrome 28 inch buck  ;)

Look at the rudder on this thing  8)

Now I am feeling very badley. Jared is still excited but I really feel this should have been his fish. He has yet to land a Steelhead and my intention was to let him take over if I would ever miss a hit - but I guess excitment took me over. He tells me not to worry, and I tag along while he fishes hard for another 2 hours, but to no avail. I consider myself quite lucky, the fish hit a total of 6 times in a row and was finally hooked by trying a new method.

Set up of the day... was exactly the same length as my fish  :) 28 inches from float to hook, with about a 12-14 inch 8-pound test Maxima Leader (size 2 red gammy hook and natural coho roe). 5 Split shot weights separated about the length of shirt buttons and float pushed right down to the top weight.

Hope you enjoyed,
Good luck out there  8)

Great report and congrats. Now we can call this 'Everyday Journal'.  ;D  Now, the young Everyday can surely fill in for Chris when the latter takes his breaks. Thanks very much for keeping us updated on the river.

Back from my vacation but struck down with a foreign flu 'bug' and bed ridden. Wish this is a steelhead 'bug' instead. Will have to look into April before well enough to head out. Hopefully you guys leave some fish for me.  ;D

Great to hear, ED - that fish nearly DESERVED to be removed from the gene pool after coming back for your berries so many times.  Too funny!

Wow beauty buck, talk about getting a second chance to catch one you guys had 6. I've had 3 skunks in a row now.I talked to Chris up river in the morning and he told me where he sent you guys the other day,but there was no lovin for me down there.Eventually I made way down to where a few people had heard of fish in the a.m. and went right to the tailout.Nobody around when I got there at 3 pm but after 10 minutes or so there was 3 guys fishin above me in trees[well not really in the trees] and 4 guys on the other side as well, time to move on ,then one boils right in front of me I decide to change up from bus to roe and next cast I get solid strike but no hook set.Fished the zone about 15 more minutes but was convinced he was stung and wouldn't bite again I moved on.I fished down through Brown for about an hour and went back to the zone and ask the guy if he caught the one I missed and he  said he just released a wild one about 8 lbs.No more fish around till 6 p.m. when I decided to pack it in.Bye the way Dan ,your photos are well done in your reports.I'm guessing your buck at about 8lbs?

I like the leader length/fish length comment.  Try lengthening your leader to 34" and see what happens ;)

That was actually the length from the top of my float to my hook..........
Kind of ironic that I am fishing my WHOLE setup shorter than most people have their leaders  ;D

roe and roe bags especially and a heavier than nuetral bouyancy, meaning u can fish them much shorter than u would a floating or nuetral bait. They sink down and into the vision of the fish without the weight being near by. meaning u could be fishing a 4ft deep run and 2.5ft and have ur roe bag withing 10 inches of the bottom with just ur hook leader (if using mono) in sight.
