Hi,
Just wanted to hear others thoughts on having a provincial training certification for fishing in BC like hunting.
Ideas????
Thoughts???
My thought is that it would be great for conservation.
I suspect there are some pros and con in terms of tourism and keeping fishing attainable to all.
I really think it should be a privilege and not a right.

License sales are down so this is not a good idea. If you bring in something like this the license sales will go down even further and we will just have more people fishing without licenses. As much as it sounds like a good idea it just wont work. Without the money from license sales you can fish any hatchery fish goodbye.

My opinion = NO

We want to attract children into the sport and make it easy for them, not put them off altogether.
Bad fishermen need educating and rule-breakers need more law enforcement on the banks.

I am not sure of the stats, but I was reading awhile ago about how sport fishing is slowly dying with fewer and fewer kids getting into the sport. I think that out of concern for the fish we can put the nail in our own coffin here by making the sport more and more exclusive and elitist. We need to take care of the fish but in order to do this we need to have a sport that is growing in numbers and concerned anglers who care. Fishermen are one of the more divided groups out there which complicates the matter even more. Much of the issues that we seem to debate over are very peripheral to the core issues like fish farming, illegal netting, ocean survival, ect. If we all were as worked up about some of these issues as we are about flossing on the Fraser, or fish handling, we would probably be better heard. that's my opinion

River fishermen in particular should have to wear a clearly visible licence this how it's done in NY state.

Perhaps we can have a graduated fishing licence system much like driver's licence. Beginners are required to wear an orange bib with a big fluorescent "N" on their backs for 2 years. They will be restricted to fishing only between 11:00 - 1:00 PM on weekends. After 2 years they become full time fishermen. :D

I like the idea of having to wear your licence number on your back. Make it easier to report violaters. Sort of goofy but what the heck everythings sort of goofy. I think seniors should have a big "S" on there back and be restricted to fishing week days. Also no one under 3 should be allowed to fish or be entitled to keep fish. I've seen losers catch their baby's quota of fish to add to theirs. :)

not the best idea ive heard :-\

i would not be opposed to paying more for a license and have the higher cost be allocated to more enforcement.

Thanks for the input.

I would have to say absolutely no.

should be a course including at very least: fish identification, ethics, acceptable practices, and how to read the regulations & synopsis (maybe even how to keep your catch in the water while you take pics)
