I noticed that when i pinch barbs sometime the barb breaks and there is a little piece still. I just throw them away but i dont know if thats considered a barb? And is there anyway to avoid this from happening?
thx
-
there really is no way to avoid that happening and if the barb is fully missing then your fine. On my spey hooks the barb tips always snap off which bugs me also. i cant buy most fly hooks barbless but for gear fishing i always buy barbless (unless they have none).

Just use a needle nose plier and pinch it down hard. Works for me.
-
use the ridged part of pliers ( many raised lines used to grab ) to file down rest of broken barb by turning the pliers back and forth to file down the barb splinter. Works fairly good most time but there is the odd big piece that doesn't file down nicely.
-
use barbless hooks simple.DNE! ;D
-
I found a spey fly tangled up in a log jam today with the barb still attatched ???
-
Hey big coho that sucks , I have found more than a dozen hooks with barbs on them this year. It is dissapointing to see.
-
people just aren't getting checked.
-
people should'nt have to be checked. its up to you to follow the law.
I have found several hooks that are barbed, even a few trebles. Finding a fly that is barbed dosent mean flyfishers are all bad.
I aso found 2 leaders in root balls that were 4-6 feet in length from betty to hook.
-
I was trying to say anything bad about flyfishers, the barbed hooks I have found have all been gear guys hooks and some of them were on leaders that were over 6 feet long. Sorry if it came acroos as me trying to say something bad about the fly guys.
-
Jim we know its the law, and i know me and my companions all pinch them, its the goofs who dont pinch who need to be checked.

no prob, just wanted other readers to understand.

If that happens I simply file it down 8)

Yes Bren I agree I had a few gammys break while fighting fish this year, maybe I am pinching down too hard when debarbing ???
-
why not just save yourself the troubles and buy barbless hooks :-\ :-\ only time i buy barbed hooks are when they have no barbless left (and i really need hooks) or when im buying fly hooks because you cant get to many of them barbless.
-
Barbless hooks (gamakatsu) have a different curve to them then the barbed versions. This is due to the fact that a barb aids in the forging process. I personally do not like the looks of the factory barbless hooks.

x2, the barbless hooks blow.

other than the tensile strength I love gammie barbless for sturgeon fishing. this past summer/ fall we increased our hook up/landing ratio by a huge %. the only downside is your using 200 lb test short strong rods and hooks are the weak spot.
but the "look" has nothing to do with the performance.
-
Mustad makes good hooks for sturgeon strength wise. However they are thick and the barbs are near impossible to pinch.
PS: Tensile Strength is not the cause for a hook bending out. The term would be stiffness.

Do they have metal shop in UBC ?
-
Actually they do. It's called the "rusty shack."
