Title: 8000 casts no steelhead
Post by: coho killer on January 23, 2009, 08:51:20 PM
I've been fishing for 2 seasons now and have only got 3 fish my last Dec. 31. I've prolly put in about 100-150 hours on the river and nothing. Was wondering if anyone can give me any advice at all.(Vedder River)

Thx

Hang in there. Your next fish is one cast away.

Go to a river with more fish.

Steelhead are easy to catch but when there's only a couple hundred in the whole stream it's tough.

See Noel Gyger's site (http://www.noelgyger.ca/) for details.

Don't grow roots, fish lots of water and fish it thoroughly. I typically cover 1-2 km of water a day. The best way to accomplish this is to make a circuit.

Adapt your techniques to the water conditions. This year the coloration is less than ideal. Unless your fishing golf ball sized roe bags leave the roe at home. Fish pink worms or jigs or other 'high water' baits.

With the colored water, fish will be hiding in very shallow water. 2ft is more than enough cover for a steelhead. Also, make sure you fish the side channels. Fish every little pocket, even if it is only the size of a bathtub.

Fish in and around fallen trees. Fish love this type of cover but fishermen do not. Places such as this can be particularly rewarding when there are many other people out on the river.

Note where you see fish being caught. Chances are that at some point down the road there will be more fish holding there under similar water conditions.

Don't waste time changing your bait. Pick something you are confident with and stick with it for the day. I personally fish jigs 90% of the time. However, I always carry roe, blades etc. on me in case I miss a fish on the jig and need to try to pursuade it to come back.

im in the same boat bud, This is my fourth steelhead season and still no fish caught or even hooked. I find that every year that goes by i become better at reading water, finding new spots and using the appropriate presentations for different conditions. I ALSO FIND THAT ITS FUN AND A MORE CHALLENGING EXPERIENCE TO FISH SPOTS THAT HAVE VERY FEW PEOPLE OR NON AT ALL. YOU WILL MEET THE OCCASIONAL ANGLER THAT IS VERY NICE AND EXPERIENCED THAT WILL GIVE YOU EDUCATION.I CANT WAIT FOR THE FIRST ONE. GONNA ENJOY IT THAT MUCH MORE! ;D GOOD LUCK TO YOU BRO!

so what the rules surrounding this competition? i wont be out till kid February. not making excuses that's just my circumstances. i run my own business which gives me little time to go fishing unless i slack off. but if i slack off i don't make money to go fishing. vicious circle!

thats works. if you catch a fish but me and ceterpin haven't yet gone out then we have a chance to tie it up. picture proof required.does that work?

Glass of milk for ED LOL

Yea I can buy a pop lol  ;D I can donate money to the cause anyways.

And yea. If you get a fish, make sure you know how many hours you have up to that point. Other people have a chance to catch up. Pic works  ;)
