Wondering if anyone here has landed a steelie yet so far? besides the day of the Derby! I've been out a couple times. First day a guy i know on the river landed a nice hatchery and i lost one. Second day i saw a nice buck jump twice! Either then that i haven't seen too much action soo far! Still hunting for my first steelie in my first season for steelies! Hopefully the water will be good for friday-sunday i'm thinking of going. If they rain keeps up it might be a lil hard!
Franky,

where abouts r you guys fishing??
-
had one on, saw a few, just yesterday saw a guy land a wild fish within 15 min of showing up. I am also hoping to land my first this year.
-
This is my first year fishing for steelies! I understand they are very easily spooked and the lighter the leader line the better chances? What kind of setups do you guys recomend? io'm currently using row! But i think my leader might be too big! i've got 12lb right now.. also what kind of line would be the best? and hook size?
thanks in advance
Franky,

from the reading that i've done, as well as talking with old timers, leader weight/hook size/bait, is not nearly as an important an issue as just finding the fish. It seems that is a large part of the challenge, you have to find where the few fish are.
-
my dad fishes 10lb and a #1 or 1/0 any condition, hooks way more fish than alot of people i know. Bait, roe, roe bags, shrimp.
leader, maximan ultra green 10lb, hook gamikatsu #1, bait=roe

Had a real early fish on the 15th of Dec but been skunked lately.. its the name of the game, I usually fish 8lb leader when very clear about 24 inch long with jensen egg/wool or a 4 inch worm, 10lb when its gets a little color and a 6" worm and egg clusters with wool, blades are great too....I agree with YG that for the most park the leader doesnt matter that much just put it in their face... try a bunch of diff baits during the day steelnohead... walk a different section on the river every time you go in your first season, find your fav spots yourself, you will learn by just walking and spending time on the river expect to put a lot of time in... I had to teach myself, this is my second season and Im learning a ton, I make a point of exploring diff baits and river sections, you will never learn by just fishing the same stretch with the same bait... have fun

hooked 4 landed 2 so far...... all on pink dinks.
-
Hooked 3 so far , landed 2 , one hatch , one wild . Depending on water conditions I use either 8lb for clear water 12lb for colored water . #4 hook , but I don't think the fish are that picky . Will bite on much bigger hooks and heavy line if you put it close to them and they are in a biting mood .

everywhere, i've heard reports of fish from the upper boundary all the way down to the canal. There is so much water to choose from, just go and find a stretch that u can call your own. I think that would be your best bet, find water "U" like to fish, and learn it, instead of just taking advice and going to different spots and guessing all the time.

Good advice given by younggun there . It's all about exploration and moving around . You'll find most don't like to give out their personal preferred spots , especially over the internet , due to drawing crowds to their favourite spots. In time you'll do well and may find yourself keeping your own secrets too. The secret with Steelies is persistence and putting in lots of time . I've been out 5 times and had fish on or caught on 3 of those trips . Only one was a more then a half day out , but then I live walking distance to some of my favourite spots and can go out for just 2 hour excursions as well as take walks down to the river to see what's happening there ;D . Just waiting for days to get a little bit longer and I can go after work again too .

The last time I was out was on the 28th, I have been too sick to go out. It's been a very bad cold this time around, a hard one to shake.
Cheers,
Nicole

Well done Nicole! ;D
I would have been out for a few hours on Christmas Day too but there was no way I was going to be able to get my vehicle anywhere near the river with all that snow.
-
0 for one lots of excerise looking for the right run???????
-
0 for 3.....this is pretty much my first steelie season also! I hope I don't go 4 seasons with no fish!
-
0-2 trips so far this season.
I just hope i have a better landing to losing ratio than i did last year for the first dozen fish or so.
I was like 3-12 landing ratio but then things turned around. ::)
-
Hooked 12, landed 2 on a big water day with nobody else on the river fishing. The heavy water was a big factor in losing so many fish.
-
im one for three on worms
-
Just wondering how people are doing for steelhead this year.
I'm 3/5 on the vedder 3 hatchery kept 1

I'm 2 for 12 landed. One wild, one hatchery. None in the last month...

Too much time on the internet. ;D ;D
-
Hope you get well soon Nicole. Glad to hear you'll be at the steelie derby coming up, it will be good to see you again. Sure wish there
were more females interested in this sport like you are. At least my wife comes to the river with me and either reads or crotchets while I fish so at least she participates, so to speak. Can't wait to get my first of 09. :)
-
1-5.. on wiild in 8 trips... next trip will be friday-sat-sun!! last few trips before i head out of town... when is the run officially done? I'm back april 2nd and would love to hit the river if there is still fish to be ccaught..
-
On the vedder I am 4 trips 4 hook ups (1 on every trip) 4 losses.... >:(
On other rivers I am 5 steelhead in 6 trips.....3 loses, 2 wilds
-
Steal_Mo the run doesnt end until the river closes. April the entire river is still open. in MAY the river above the vedder crossing bridge closes to ALL fishing and below the crossing goes FLY ONLY until the end of May. June the river closes to all fishing until July 1st
-
0 for 1 in 3 trips on the fly (single hander)
I lost a big 'un last Sunday on the lower river
-
2 for 5 after today. Didn't see or hear of a fish today.
-
Two trips so far.
One with the fly rod; the other with gear - artificials only, with a focus on metal.
Not a sniff so far, but it will get better.
I am passing up on the goo. I am not that desperate to catch one...yet! :P

We were catching a few on the island in december.. :-X
It was kinda weird to see them in the river so soon, we were pulling out steelies on one side and sockeye on the other.
Those big steelies sure are a good fight though.
Haven't had any luck finding them yet in 2009
:o
I'm new to this site.
-
0-fer so far this year. 3-10 career stats :)
