Sorry it has taken me so long to get this post up, The day of the Derby will be Sunday February 15th, 2009.
Derby ticket and check-in point
Tickets are available today at Searun Tackle, Riverside Tackle, Highwater Tackle, Reaction Fly & Tackle, Pacific Angler and Michael & Young.... . All the tickets that are pre-sold will still have to validated the morning of the derby.
Reaction Fly and Tackle (http://www.reactionbaits.com) in Abbotsford will once again be the check-in point. Check-in will start at 6:30am Sunday morning.
The cost of entering will be $25. There will be derby hats available to the first 50 people who get their tickets validated.
If you are not able to pre-purchase a ticket at a tackle shop, tickets will be available for purchase at the check in station between 6:30 am and 8:00am. Make sure you are there before 8:00am or your ticket cannot be validated and your entry will not count!
Weigh-in time and potluck BBQ
Once again we will have a potluck BBQ at the Cedar Run. The final fish must be weighed in by 2:00pm at the Cedar Run. Lunch will be starting at 2:00pm followed by derby winner prizes and raffle draws.
When your fish is being weighed in, your filled out current fishing licence must be shown.

One more thing I forgot to mention, XGolfman had suggested that we set up a fly-fishing only section for this derby.... I think we will go ahead with this idea, I will figure some things out and post soon about how this will work.... XGolf you wanted this you have to help me set it up :)
please continue with the feedback and let me know what each of you can bring to the lunch !!
TH

I'd like to help out, I will chat with you next week to see how...
Looking forward to it!

You got it curly....I'll help and donate to that prize...it will be good too...
All you really have to do is what you've done...There will be a fly award too now!! I'll talk to a few people and get some movement on it...
For us handicapped fisherman...I would like to know if it would be OK if a verified C & R would be allowed as well? Would require another member be on hand to see it and you'd have to have a measuring tape and pictures for it to be allowed..Just a thought as some don't like to wack the little bassturds and I don't foresee a glut of fish caught this way..
Any comments or suggestions from the swing community?
-
If a fly category is to be added, perhaps a thread should be started on http://forum.flybc.ca as well to generate more interests.
-
Hey I could give a bunch of cleardrift floats for a prize!
-
I'll be there for sure.
-
I like the idea of some flyfishing prizes in the mix, having something flyfishers want to win means more entries, and more money raised for the cause...
That being said, it will be a freaking miracle if a flyrod catches a steel on that day anyway ;)
Er wait, they just floss anyway, so realistically, flyfishers should catch the bulk of the fish... ;D Just kidding!
Women should be treated like one of the guys... A junior prize for under 16 would be nice!
Cheers,
Nicole
-
Dammit! My first year steel head fishing!! I would of loved to attend and help out with this derby!!! I leave overseas on the date of this derby!! until april 2nd!! dammmmmmit!!!! would of been fun~! well have a good one guys and goodluck to ya!

That is a great idea Nicole. I too think there should be a junior prize, if this junior division goes ahead I will see what I can do for a prize.

I'll come if there's any cleaning supplies to be won.... ;D

ill bring my moms swiffer wet jet.. :P she doesn't use it anymore wont even know its missing.... ::)

I will be there !!

I guess I must of missed it but where exactly is the money going this year?
Oh yeah, I will bring the buns and bowls for the chilli.
-
Rick (TH),
Do you have any drop off points for your prizes? Reaction, Fred's... Might be an easier way than sending it to North Van for some people.

All prizes can be dropped off at Reaction, just make sure it is labeled with my name on it and prefferably leave it with Darryl if he is there
cheers Rick

Are there going to be any provisions for pre payment and registration this year or will everyone marshall up at Reaction same as last?

I am working on distributing the tickets throughout the lower mainland right now, hopefully by next week monday there will be tickets available at 5-6 tackle shops from N Van to Chilliwack, tickets will also be available to purchase at Reaction between 6:30 am and 8 am derby day...... every ticket that is purchased has to be registered at Reaction on derby day

So after a lot of concideration and discussion we have found ourselves a very worthy cause to donate the proceeds of our derby to.
Kids in the Nest provides not only a fantastic educational tool to thousands of people worldwide, but they also provide us, the fishermen a great tool which can show us up to date conditions and water levels and just plain entertain us !!!
This money we donate will make a big difference, maybe even make it so they can stay online period !! I spoke with the lady in charge today, her name is Charlie Hilliard and she is a fantastic lady with an amazing vision !!
I personallly am very proud that we fishermen are going to be able to make such a big difference and have a great time to boot !!!
I hope that everybody entering this years derby is as excited as me for what we will be able to accomplish !!
Tickets are available today at Searun Tackle,Riverside Tackle and Highwater Tackle.... there are three more tackle shops that will also be selling tickets as soon as I have time to get to them. All of these shops have also told me they will make prize donations, as soon as I find out what they are they will be posted on this thread
This is going to be a huge success and I can't wait till Feb 15th !!!!
TH
-
Good to hear Rick, the kids in the nest is a great idea ,especially if the donation helps keep the cam running long term.
-
Yes this is good to here Rick. I use this camera often and it will be nice to see it stay online providing an excellent educational tool for kids around the world.
-
Good to hear Rick. The webpage for the derby will go up the end of this week and we'll start promoting it heavily on the main section of the website then.
-
A good organization to be donating the funds to as the river cam will be something people of all ages world wide will continue to enjoy.
I am sure the funds raised from the derby and donated will be much appreciated.
-
I agree with Chris and many other's. The camera is a very viable tool that will be accessed and used worldwide and especially by us local fishermen. I know I certainly get excited when I check out the Chehalis camera and this will be every bit as good. Thank's again Rick for all
the hard work you've done to get this all together and I can't wait for Feb. 15th. It's going to be great.
-
This derby was and is a great idea that rick started 3 years ago but in the grand scheme of things the amount of money that will be raised is barely going to make a difference to the projects that need to be done to the river or to steelhead for that matter, while i know every penny adds up but i think rick has made a good choice where the funds should go and by donating the amount of money that will be raised to this cause it will make a significant difference and keep the cam up and running, remember this cam is in its infant stage and if it survives long enough some of the glitches I'm sure can be worked out to benefit all who use the river or just want to learn about it and the Eco system around it.I think for those that don't like their privacy compromised stay away from the area ,its a big river ,fish somewhere else or if you do decide to be in the area just don't do anything illegal and keep your pants on and everything should be OK :)
-
Webpage is now set up, basically a summary page with a URL that is easier to remember and refer to.

Sponsors, please email me at info@fishingwithrod.com if you do not see your prizes and names listed.

Randy from hatch matchers has once again come up with a great prize for this derby. He has given me a fishing vest from West coast outdoor supplies. It is the totem vest and is an XL.

-
Excellent prize !!! A big Thx to Hatch matchers and a big Thx to you Flyguy
Great stuff !!
TH
-
Just wanted to remind everybody that is entering the derby that there are tickets available for purchase at
Searun Tackle, Riverside Tackle, Highwater Tackle and Reaction Fly & Tackle
cheers TH
-
DNE Fishing Tackle will provide floats to give away at the derby.
-
Ok, Finalization has been done for the fly side of the derby...We're looking at only one or two prizes..The main prize will be a nice one...if other prizes are donated we will transfer them over to the regular derby..
I really like the idea of the money going to the cam as well...I know Rick is meeting up to have lunch tomorrow with her and think that's great!!!
Now for the rules for the fly side..
Prize for largerst fish!!! That's pretty much it!!! Something nice and fly related so you gear guys don't get a knot in your heinies..
Rules are as follows...
Largest fish on scale OR Largest fish C & R' d Wins...
If you choose to fish this way ( C & R) you need to make sure you have your own measuring tape with you (not provided) you'll have to take clear pictures with length and width etc. and in the picture you HAVE TO SHOW your 2009 derby ticket that you'll receive on the day of the derby!!! Pretty easy stuff!!
IF by chance we have a scaled fish and a C & R fish and come up with equal weights, The scale fish will be declared the winner!!!
I'm trying to arrange a prize for both and hope to have that in place...but if not this will be how it goes...Many thanks to Micheal and Youngs for their donation on this..so pretty sure their will be two prizes...
If by chance there isn't a fish caught in the fly section, then the prize (s) will go to.......me!!!!
Ok, just kidding.....
I would like to see them go to someone who is just starting out and will actually use it!!! Personally I would like to offer it first in raffle form to the people helping Rick to the set up and cooking etc. who don't get a chance to fish that day and/or to some carpet crawler who'll make his/her gear parents life miserable from that day forward!!! ;D
I'll work this part out with Rick later..but for now that's how it stands...
I have talked to a few shops and found out the C & R part is important to some guys so that's why were putting it in on the fly only section....Rick said, some gear guys wanted it too...so if you choose to make sure your using a fly rod as that's the only section this will be allowed in!!!
No whiners!!!!
In the future Rick might add this to the derby as a whole but that's his decision for another year...I bugged the sheeit out of him to allow me to enter it on the fly side and am running that side myself to help out!!!
That's it boys and girls...get out their and support this derby as it's going to a really viable cause this year!!!!

Good morning to all, my first post.
Saturday January 24th I had the privilege and yes honor to meet one amazing man. Rick Lewis. I was also privileged to meet his two fishing buddies, Brian & Jamie. Prior to going down to the river to meet them, I asked if Rick had any objection of myself zooming up on him and his friends as they fished so the children around the world could see them and their equipment. Little did I or them know what we were about to see.
After a number of phone calls with Rick, I explained to Rick that I can in fact through this camera on the river see the fish below the waterline.
No sooner did Rick drop his line in that beautiful river and BAM, fish on. From our side, the camera side, it looked like a whale. E-mails from around the world came swarming in. What kind of fish is that, who is he, do they eat them, what kind of bait do you use, does he feed his village with this fish, and on and on it went. It was all I could do to keep the camera on Rick as I was as shocked and excited to see him nail into that monster right before the camera.
I than had to leave to meet Rick and his friends down at the river, and what do you think happened when I was NOT behind the camera.
The world is seeing all of this. The children in South Africa and other countries who never see such things are just in awe. They can not understand how any of you can fish in the snow, or for that matter, many have never seen snow. The questions they ask just keep coming. Gill & Irene Bouvier who were gracious enough to allow us to place this camera and all the equipment that goes along with it in their home, we THANK YOU.
We here at Kids in the Nest would also like to thank each of you who have been so supportive of what it is we are trying to do with these cameras and the message we are trying to convey around the world.

Charlie it was a pleasure to meet you and your husband and Gill on Saturday. It's too bad no one was behind the camera just after you left, because the kids in Africa could have seem their first fisherman fall into a river. I went in bum first for my first serious soaker of the season! ;)
I love the video by the way!
Brian

Oh my gosh, Brian if I had seen that off the camera I swear I would have fallen off my chair in total laughter. That water is COLD, but I don't think you need me to tell you that, giggle giggle.
Here I had just taken those pictures of the soles of your boots to show th kids in Africa, why it was you guys don't slip out there. I'd have had a hard time explaining this one.
I was on the camera all day today, and once again saw a monster swimming on up the river. It hung back behind this rock and would roll like I had seen the salmon do, that you guys catch.
There we're a number of guys out there and I soooooo wish I could have yelled over that camera, to the left, left....go left....LOL.
Oh well, they'll be there for you guys another day, and if I told you where it was, where would the sport be in finding them....:)
I also would like to thank you guys for going out of your way to meet with us. It was a real joy to talk with you all.
I hope you will appreciate the humour in this:

Hi everyone. Well Rick the derby day is nearing and I'm sure excited. My wife said she will make up 2 or 3 dozen deviled eggs and also
a veggie plate with dips. Just a question. What if the river is in terrible shape come derby day, would we do it the following week or just go for it. Just wondering because the rains they are a comin'. Anyway's, not to sound gloomy but I was just wondering about that. I am very excited and know it will be, once again a resounding success, both for us, the fishermen/woman and for the community.
-
Well looking at the 14 day trend on the weather network the weather looks good. But we all know things can change but lets keep our fingers crossed that it will not.
-
HEY the first year of the derby we fished in -12 degrees temps it was so cold my reel was seizing up,i will gladly take a little rain over that any day ;D
-
So right SeaRun, I remember that year. I would have to poke the ice out of each eyelet before I could cast again, Brrrrr. Rain is no problem for me and if you were able to look at my many pics taken over the years many show me to be a wet but still smiling boy. I was just saying if a worst case scenario happened with water vis. almost zero and the water raging. Probably not going to happen so just disregard the question and carry on with your regular scheduled programming. :)

WOW WOW WOW. If this in any indication of what you amazing Steelhead fisherman have been catching...wow wow wow. This was caught right in front of the Chilliwack River Cam. People from around the world wanted to know, what was it, what did it weigh, who caught it, how did he catch it and on and on it went.
Good luck to each and everyone of you at the Derby. Just wish the derby was right below the camera so the WORLD could see all of you guys/women.
CONGRATULATIONS to this mystery fisherman.

Good Morning Rick. I have had a number of people ask me for a map and directions on how to get to the location this is being held at. Is there any way you can post one for us.
Thank you and have a GREAT day. You sure made mine and the WORLDS yesterday...:)

Here is a map of the vedder. The cedar run is number 36 and that is where the weight in is at as well as the BBQ.

Here is the link as well in case this map is too small.

Rick, I can probably bring a fold up table depending on the weather. The one I own isn't overly fond of water.

I hope more prizes come in as well. The other shops that said they would donate should announce what they will donate as it will draw more people to the derby.
-
Rick, has Pacific Angler donated a prize yet?

According to the list the only tackle shops that have donated are Hatch Matchers, Searun and Highwater.

As I write this Paul aka XGolfman is working out the final details on a prize from Michael & Young.... I believe that the prize will be a combined effort of Paul and M&Y and it will be a good one !!!!! also Nicole is talking with Pacific Angler and I will let you know what they donate as soon as I find out.. Dave from Highwater Tackle has also informed me that he will be making an additional prize donation on top of the Baitcaster rod!!!! Oh yeah and I just finished ordering the piping hot Tim Horton's coffee for derby day !! :) that oughta be enough to get Chris out this year lol

Micheal and Young have been kind enough to donate a NEW Ross momentum reel #4, gold in color!!! for the winner of the fly fish!!!
If by chance :D none are caught, I think Rick will work out a raffle for this fine reel...It will fit on an 8wt single hand rod or a small spey rod set up!!!
Very nice prize!!!! Many Thanks M & Y

Hey Rick I have a suggestion for next year. Their might be some of us ( myself included ) who would be willing to pay for a ticket just to go to the cause. Maybe next year you could set up a PayPal account so that those who want to donate to the cause could do so. Maybe even include those people in the raffle draws ( non fish related draws of course )
-
Its never too late !! I already have a paypal account setup !! if you want to donate to the cause it can be sent to ricks_honda@hotmail.com just let me know how much you sent and make sure I know it is there and I can make sure the money gets donated....
One more thing I want everyone to know is that the reel donated by Michael & Young was also donated by XGolfman !! it was a combination of his money and their money that made this awesome prize possible !! A big Thanx goes out to Paul !!!!!!!

Yes thank you Paul and Micheal and Young, that is definately a great prize.
-
Good luck to all those partaking in the derby. :)
I'll make sure to stay away from the river that day - the Vedder is crowded enough without a derby taking place.
I can only imagine what it will be like on Sunday! :o
Anyway, to all those who will be there, have fun guys and make sure to leave a few fish behind for those of us that will fish after you! ;)
-
Randy Beck from Ultimate Sportfishing will be donating some Ultimate Sportfishing wearables
Thank you very much for your ongoing support !!!!

Hey Rick, I got 75 bowls. I hope that is enough. I will pick up the buns on Saturday and do we still need spoons. Let me know and I will pick them up.

We do need spoons, if you could grab those it would be great, seems to me however that only a few people who are attending have told me what they are bringing!! I hope it doesn't end up as a few feeding a hundred, maybe if we don't get enough people bringing a potluck item we will have to cancel the lunch part of the derby next year
TH
-
Stipulate that if you don't bring food you can't eat any.
-
Hey Rick.... havn't done this before.
Are we able to purchase a ticket right at the river if we have 25 bucks the morning of, instead of having to drive all the way back to Reaction to Pick one up and validate it?
I live right on the river and plan to fish up that way anyways.
-
All tickets have to be validated at Reaction the morning of the derby. Reaction is only 15min so that is not to far away.
-
i hope that they pick up a lot of there garbage on sunday the river is not a dump please pick up your trash thx

If you have ever been to one of our derbies you would know that the area we use is always cleaner when we leave than when we first get there !!!
And everyday as flyguy said all tickets must be validated at reaction the morning of the derby, as you know there are many people travelling a long distance to take part, reaction fly and tackle have been a big supporter since we started the derby and that is why the validation takes place there

Unforunetly Rick when doing frundraisers it is always the same core of people that step up. Searun17 and I both know as that is what happened to us in the past when we have organized fundraisers. I think that maybe in the future we charge a small few for those that want to eat but do not contribute to the lunch.

Rick have you got anything from Pacific Angler yet? I'm going to head there today to get my ticket. I worked there a bit over the past two years and can probably get them to donate something if they haven't already.

My friend brian has been talking with them, however at this point they haven't said what they are going to donate
-
Well I didn't make it to Pacific Angler yesterday. But I should be driving by there today before they close. Has anyone talked to the guys at Riverside Fly and Tackle? I'll be in Poco tonight for a party and will be swinging by Riverside for some bait. I can probably push them to donate something too.

-

It's not that big, maybe 2'x4' or so, but it's in my truck ready to go.
Talked to my old boss at Riverside to bug him for a donation, but he said he already sent stuff off with someone else.
