Title: rod and reel set up

short question for the spey pros out  there have a islander fr4 and wanted to put a skagit line on it as it is collecting dust and use it with my cnd 14'3 7/8/9 solstice is this reel to heavy for that rod if so any reel sugestions thanks for all the help

from what i could find online about your reel. it is rated a 12-15wt reel and good for saltwater fishing for big fish like Tuna&Tarpon. I would say it will probably be on the heavy side for your 7/8/9 spey rod. try putting it on your rod and see how it balances.....if it balances where it should be with the real BARE then it may feel to heavy when its loaded with line however that might make it better. I think i would try and trade it for an FR2 or FR3


FR2- is a 7-9wt reel, FR3- is a 10/11wt reel

either reel should be a better fit for your spey rod i would think.


I myself run a Bauer JM5 on my Echo 9140 and it balances perfect loaded with line. Hope that bit of info helps

Your FR4 is fine might just lean on the heavy side, but nothing is perfect...
