I'm wondering what is the best colour and brand to buy to make roe. I've heard orange is good as well as red. Not to sure which one to get?
-
Personal preference in my opinion. I've caught on pink and orange.
-
buy them all, experiment, and have fun. It's all part of the experience. If you only want one or two colors, start with a red and a pink or orange. You can always mix colors and add scents as well.

Exactly. And if you're really into it buy the Roe Curing Book. It's pretty much the bible for curing. It also makes a difference what fish you plan to target.

When the water is crystal clear roe cured in just borax seems to work fine.
I've had better success with red in the Vedder but I cured some roe this fall that is a Salt, Sugar and Jello mixture...some say Steelhead like it...go figure.

1. No color, natural color of roe.
2. Orange
3. Orange
4. Orange
In order of importance ;D ;D

Red hot double stuff is a go to for me! After that it's natural then orange!

I second what Hotrod said, red hot double stuff did wonders for me, outfished some premade stuff I bought this year
-
original orange magical :)

I have always just cured roe naturally, seems to work the best if there is fish in the pool they wont be able to resist it. Well except if its lock jawed coho in crystal clear water. :P
-
Im new to the roe curing myself but i had alot more luck with orange cured roe over just useing Borax on its own to cure. but then again its probably because the river was getting pretty green when we were useing it.

This may be a stupid question, but if you buy roe at army and navy, what do you have to do to it to use it?
Thanks, Dave

Nothing, that roe is already prepared.
Best roe colour is no colour at all.
Natural colour is best.
IMO the only thing that cure needs to do is to firm up the eggs.
Use borax and rock salt (pure salt without additives, iodine)
