Title: Chilliwack Vedder, October 19, 2008
Post by: chris gadsden on October 19, 2008, 07:44:27 PM
I got a call from Denis last night and as he can only fish weekends he asked me to take him up. We met up a Tims at 6:45 and I took him to the "hot spot", the conditions were improved from yesterday. It was a bit chilly, near 0 I thought. We made our first cast at first light and I missed a fish on the first drift but the next chance was a long time coming. A chap came into the the run on the otherside of the run using roe bags and lost two fish on his first two casts, the first being a nice coho.

Finally the bite started and I had a long battle with a chum salmon approaching 18 pounds fairly clean for a buck and the teeth were just starting to grow. Dennis missed 5 in a row and I had a few chances as well including losing one. I then landed a fresh run doe in the 10 pound range.

We fished to about 10:30 and then we went for breakfast, no not Cookies as they are closed on Sunday.

After breakfast we took a run up to the hatchery and stopped at a couple of runs on the way including the Tamahi Rapids, very little garbage and few fish by reports we were given, saw none on the beach.

Next stop was the Cement Slabs, lots of garbage and lots of people working the area and lots watching the show. We saw some dark chum salmon caught all not inside the mouth. I also had to remind 3 people in the Limits Hole there was no fishing allowed there at this time.

We then pulled into the hatchery and as Buck said not that many coho as there should be, snapped a photo of those in the channel. I think we will not see an increase in the amount of coho being caught this year as the run is poor and I believe nearing its end, if it really started. It is now mostly just a chum salmon fishery. In the 4 areas we stopped at during the day the only coho I saw on or caught was at where we started fishing.

Our final cleanup area was below the Vedder Bridge and got one half a bag full and a few more tins.
Saw more fish laying on the river edge including one jack spring, the rest chum salmon. In the 10 minutes we were there we saw one bright hen landed that was caught under the chin and retained.

Our day ended around 3 o'clock, a beautiful Fall day enhanced by the turning of the leaves, some good fellowship and we did our part cleaning up some garbage dropped by some careless users of the Chilliwack Vedder River.

I beg to differ, Chris.

The coho season is just taking off for me.
I caught these two gals on the fly today in one of my favourite holes:

Not a single chum today for me, but at least half a dozen coho.
It's just a matter of finding the right water. ;)

Tight lines,

Milo

Were you fishing the ponds again or swinging the fly in flowing water? Maybe that's where I need to be casting my spoon. ;)

You don't have to wade across thr river at all. You can access it from the other side.
Well, just a little bit of wading across the opening - it's shallow and easy.

Yeah I know. We usually park on the Chilliwack side because Chris is paranoid that someone would take his Leaf Mobil. ::) Maybe I'll give it a go on Tuesday, but I might just head further up to a run where I was certain there would be coho in it. ;D

Nice fish Milo!!!  I also agree with you.  I hit 2 Coho on my last 2 casts of the day then packed it in without seeing if there were anymore in there.  Wanted to book it out of there before anyone saw me hitting Coho.  Then my secret little spot wouldn't have been so secret. :D

Nice fish Milo, and on the fly, way to go ;D ;D I was out about a week ago and landed two nice 10lb coho, one hatchery, the other wild. It was in one of your favorite backwaters in the upper river ;) Next outing I'll have to try some of the lower river ponds as they seem to be producing welll too.

I heard about this kid, I hear he's the king when it comes to force feeding fish!  So I should forget the red wool and go bare?  Should I pinch the barb cause I hear it's optional?
a guy at cement slab said not to debarb the treble hooks, and i never saw him lose a fish

There are No Trespassing signs all over the place yet I see cars parked along the road. Has any of them being towed ?

Last march I was walking through the prison grounds, and the one guy who does the security patrols drives up to me, and began to make some friendly talk. The guy was really nice but wouldnt stop talking! I guess he was bored working up there by himself. He could care less If anyone woundered on to the private land, as long as your not looking for trouble.

Nice report Milo, pretty sure myself and my buddy were two gear guys fishing beside you. If you are Serbian or Croatian. Nice fishing with you guys. We did foul hook some fish but released them all. My buddy did retain one which bit his spinner. That spot is by no means a secret. We did very well there last year, fished with the same method and pretty much 95% of all coho caught had bitten the lure right in the mouth. Sorry if anybody thinks casting spinners or spoons is unethical, it has worked for me many times before.

No need to apologize for using spinners.

Hey, Rybar, I know exactly who you guys were.
I was surprised to see how efficient you guys were fishing with spinners, and I was delighted at your and your buddies ethics. You made sure to carefully revive and release the few fish you foul hooked. I was commenting to my friend that it would be nice if all fishermen showed respect for the fish like you guys did. Kudos to you! :)

As for the spot, it is not a secret, but it is not public domain either. Most of the people who fish it are the same people every time.
So in the interest of conserving one of the decent few fly fishing waters on the Vedder free from the hordes, please keep the spot to yourselves and by all means introduce yourselves next time we meet.

Did you get to see me taking a dunk while fighting that big coho?  ::)

Tight lines,

Milo

Yup,  I'll be there on Friday with the spinner and gear rod.  I will have a green and black back pack and will be wearing a brown San Fran Hard Rock hat.  Say hi if you see me.

Cheers, Rob

Hey Milo, did see you take a dunk in the water. Entertaining to say the least.  ;)

I kind of discovered this spot last year before most people knew about it. It was a VERY productive year last year. This year it is stacked with coho but they just aren't taking. I still think the water is a bit too low and clear.

I have pictures of a very large coho my buddy caught and released from that day.

My inlaws are Croatian so I did understand some of what you guys were saying.  ;D

Also a huge weed growth doesnt help matters. Those weeds were not in there last year like they are this year. So many places including some sloughs have been overgrown by vegetation making it more and more difficult to target coho.

So true, Bryan.
By next year, the spot won't be fishable anymore unless some very high water comes from behing the slough and washes everything down.

But then again, there is always steelhead season...new spots to discover...they form every year.
