Title: Squmaish / Mamquam / Chaekamus
Post by: c-pin on October 08, 2008, 09:00:34 AM
I have a week off work ..... so instead of the Vedder or Capilano, I was thinking of venturing up the Sea to Sky Highway. I know this system is traditionaly a "late run" system, but has anyone got any recent fishing information?

Feel free to PM me if you wish.

Thanks,  John

I was out walking the dog and checking on conditions yesterday. At least two dozen people along the Squamish/ lower Mamquam. Water was too high because of the rain, probably ~3ft. higher than the day before.
I did not see anything caught but talked to a guy who caught a chum and a coho the day before (Monday) when the water was lower.
The Cheakamus is way too high and muddy right now. There is still lots of mud coming in from the Cheekeye.
Given the weather forecast, conditions should be good in the next few days - expect a gong show on the Squish/ Mamquam area on the weekend.
I might venture out Thursday/ Friday to more remote spots...
Good luck & enjoy.

Are more remote parts of these rivers accessible by car, or only by significant hikes.  Its not that I am averse to walking, but I have heard that there are a lot of aggressive bears in the area.  I don't know that I'm as good with a stick as the guy in 100 mile...

Remote = Hiking = More chance to see bears

Haven't been up there for Salmon yet but the cheak has been muddy from what I have heard and the Chum in the Squamish have been pretty slow so far. If you dont mind the drive and the chance of slow fishing then give it a shot. If you want to be sure to hook into Salmon then I would give it a little bit before you go up that way.

If you go with another person or 2, you have better chances of being heard by bears from a distance.

Was out tonight after work. Not to much happening at the mamquam or the cheak. Cheakamus is still really dirty as well, surprising considering up here in whistler it was below freezing last night. Have to wait a bit longer I guess.....

The mamquam rarely runs with silt or dirt in it unless there has been precipitation. Cheak and the Squamish is another story. Maybe there was some logging or a slide up the Cheekeye or Cheakamus because it just doesnt seem to want to clean up yet this year ??? Usually buy this time with the colder weather we have water that has 18" - 24" of vis instead of 12" - 18" of vis. Not sure whats going on.

tight lines

Was out today and hooked a couple of very bright fish but still very spotty out there. Talked to a CO and he was saying that if the numbers dont pick up they will be closing the river to retention again.  :'( :'(  What a difference a cycle makes, four years ago the chummies were everywhere and now they are in a few small locations. A real shame so far, hope it picks up in the next couple of weeks. On a side note while leaving the confluence of the Cheakamus today I discovered VERY LARGE grizzly bear prints from sometime in the last day. I have never seen grizz prints down there so be careful if fishing the Cheakamus......

I will bring my bear spray.   I do not want to wind up on TV as a casualty of fishing and meeting a hungry bear.

That is most likely the print off of the bear known as"Kon". He is 600+ and has been known to be on the Cheakamus as well as the lower Squamish and Ashlu Rivers. A friend of mine is doing a grizzly DNA study of this area and has run in to him more than one. And for the record, there are more than 3 bears in the area.

In regard to chum, they should be closed NOW as there are very few of them. This was a very large escapement 4 years ago but it appears to be a bust again like last year. Last year was 10 - 15% of normal. Lets hope we don't have a repeat of that or your going to have some very hungry and crankly bears wandering around looking for food.
