I am not sure if black roe would work

Black wool and black flies work ;)

To answer your questions:
1) Double Redd looks purple ... but the eggs are dyed a reddish / hot pink. This colour is deadly. I use it a lot. I will use plain Borax when the water is very clear, and don't want to spook the fish.
2) I have mixed colours, and the eggs have looked awesome! I used a little Double Red with Steelhead Pink. The eggs looked great; they came out a marbled colour. I used the bait with confidence, and it paid off. Although I will say, that I don't know if I noticed any more fish.
Hope this helps.

the picture on my avitar is a light coat of steelie pink
Hope this helps determine the color you want ;D

pro cure double hot red and fire cure red are my favorite colors for springs and chum. Make sure you use lots of borax after curing though. It'll make handling the roe much easier with less staining of your fingers.
-
thanks for all the help,
hey bentrod, do you use pro cure and borax? why the borax, isnt the procure good enough,
-
Use the procure to cure the roe, then the borax to make it easier to handle. Once the roe is cured, the borax doesn't effect the roe anymore, it just keeps the red from getting all over me and keeps the chunks of roe separate and easier to pick out when you reach in your bag.
-
Borax also serve to help dry the eggs.
-
Borax also seems to help with the initial milking when the roe hits the water
-
Borax is king!
