Title: Curing with cool-aid?
Post by: Every Day on August 26, 2008, 09:25:49 PM
I have been hearing so much about curing roe with cool-aid. Has any one ever tried this before ????  If so does it work quite well or does it take away the effect of the roe (because of diff smell) or do the fish still love it?

Also if anyone has done this before could you give me some tips on how to cure it like this. Would you do it the same way as pro-cure and borax or a diff way. Pics would be great too  8)

Thanks everyone
Dan

My buddy swears by it. Don't know how he does it though.

Hey E.D, when I first started out I used cherry jello to cure my roe and it worked like a hot damn. Now I have evolved to a higher plane of existence as far as roe curing and have just recently obtained my patent no. 1367950 for my roe curing process. Now cool-aid is a tuffy for me to comment on as I've never used it but it may not be too far behind cherry jello for results. I can say cherry jello yielded very good results for a number of years and is still held in high esteem by myself and my friends. Good Luck E.D

What's the method for the cherry jello?

just google it. There are a lot of recipes on the Internet. Salmon are salt and sugar junkies, so it's no surprise it works.  IMO the cherry color is a bigger attractant than the jello flavor.

I think Bentrod has it right.  Koolaid is just a colouring agent.  Borax, sugar and other ingredients do the curing.

bentrod is right....jello is mainly used as color additive....however, it supposedly masks or decreases the human scent.....to his own in what cha believe.....

I have used  raspberry kool aid on my roe,i find it to color the eggs a nice red,i mainly use it just for color and air dry my skeens and rubbed down with borax, this is what i got the first fish at the boxing day derby on a couple years ago.
