Hey all, promised a report and here it is. Fished the Vedder for a few hours this afternoon. First time out in a few months, fishing was very slow.
Ran into a few anglers and only heard of one being lost around mid river today. As for me nada. Fished hard too! the upper has good visibility of around 3 feet, but from tamihi and down was a muddy colour. I was fishing the upper and also checked out the hatchery. No fish in there whatsoever and spoke with the hatchery staff and they said any day now ::) Once the river drops I think it will be good. Will try again next week as my journal from previous years has indicated that the fish start to show around the15th. Last year I got my first on the 13th so lets what and see. Good luck to everyone, hope this helps.

June or July ?? ???
-
River is closed in June soooooooo.... Typo ;)
-
Is it just me or is catching a red spring in the vedder become just as hard as steelie? i remember back in 2001 if u came first light you were gona be into a fish for sure but these days i have seen more reds caught in october than july. ??? ??? ???
-
hey floater, I don't seem to have problems catching the reds when they are in. every year the river changes and there for their holding areas.
I find one spot that use to be a honey hole for me one year, changes the next. I do agree that they seem more concentrated as a previous poster said, and you'll find the bulk of the run one week, then things will slowly die off after the fishing was good as oppose to let's say the white spring run where when the bulk comes in, you have 3-4 weeks of fishing for them. Steelhead though...couldn't catch one for the life of me on the vedder :) :)

Fishing for Reds in the vedder can be both challenging and easy. Some water that looks like good holding water may not contain fish...and water that looks terrible will be stacked....atleast from my experience :)...Like anything. If you put in the time you will get rewarded!

No Chris, you are not alone. Way back for me catching a red spring in early/mid july was as easy as catching a coho in the Cap, and Cap coho were thick back then. Both systems are seeing those glorious days in the sunset. ;D :(

I caught more Steelhead than all the Red springs COMBINED that I have caught in my 4 years of fishing. I get frustrated fishing for them, I find them alot harder than Steelies, but that is just me. I guess I need to learn the right type of water, that and I am mostly limited to lower river (Vedder Bridge down) since I can't drive so this year wont be good for me either probably as well. Maybe some 1 can hook me up sometime ???
-
The fishing has become tougher over the years. I remembered every July 1st, eager fishermen would line the lower river ( some camping ) and when first light hits the river, Bam!!!!! fish on. Black on top of red wool would be a killer combination. The parking lot around Lickman was our favourite as we were sure to hook into a few.
Like fishing everywhere, that has changed. Now, you might get a good year once in a while. 2006 was a good year for red spring. I was able to hook into quite a few. 2007- I got nothing!!!

beauty of a fish cohoman!!! I love looking back at pictures in the past. It always brings me back right to the day and I could remember all the great memories I had.
Tried my luck again today on the 8th with exact same results as the previous day. Water did clear up about a foot or so from the previous outting, and is dropping rapidly.
I feel it in my bones.....next week the biting will be on :o
-
Good to know as I will be on vacation. Looking forward to catching a few...

Roe Kid was that years past or today/yesterday ??? Im thinking of going today.... I'm beginning to think this is harder than Steelheading :o
-
I went out today and 3 casts in hooked up with one but he busted me off after a minute. Couldnt get him to bite again. Explored more river but no signs of any more springs. A bunch of sockeyes showing themselves tho. Will try again tomorrow

OMG. You are still using that pic? :D Twas a good day though. We both got into some nice fish that day. Looking forward to getting out again sometime in the future, just really busy right now........ but looks like I may be a lot closer to the river come steelhead time!! ;)

Anyone caught anything lately? Even though it's a strong year on the columbia, these fish have a serious case of lock jaw.
-
I personally haven't heard from my friends that fished, but they have heard of a couple here and there being taken, as well as fish being hooked but lost.
If it doesn't come from the "mouth" itself and just "heard of a few guys getting them" then I tend not to think to much about those kind of reports.
I would love to go on Sunday but can't, definatley will hit the vedder on Mon, or Tues and will give my report then. I think I may take some photos aswell just
to let everyone know what conditions are like seeing what gas prices are like..........
