With the chinook fishery opening on July 1, I thought I would provide the river conditions when I am near it. Because of the recent hot spell it has jumped about 6 inches and visibility was about 12 to 14 inches when I looked at it around 7 o'clock this morning.
Also the rainbow (steelhead smolts) opens as well that day which I donot personally favor as some slow moving fish that are still migrating out are taken as well as some anglers take wild fish as they do not know the difference.
However I guess it can be a popular fishery for the younger angler which is great but there is some that abuse it. Hopefully the CO's will be out checking things.

44 views and no thank you ?
Thanks Chris :)

Here here thanks Chris
we need updates from guys like you
I dont need to know where the hot spots are but info on the water conditions make life easier for someone that has to travel a long way to check it out what with the high gas prices :-\
This is what keeps this site going ;D
Thanks again Chris keep it comming
-
ya thx for the info long way to go if the river sucks nice to know what's happening thx again
-
Excellent job Chris, you're da best out there! :-* :-*
-
Thanks again Chris ;). It is a huge help for guys like me who live far away.
-
thanks alot chris, its a huge help for guys like me who live even farther away.

Is there any enforcement on the river right now? 3 weeks ago and today Iv seen people fishing the river, and as I watched 2 of them fish they were sneaking fish back to there car one at a time.... no they where not fly fishing. Its not hard to find whos doing this, you can find people fishing it most weekends during this closed period....
-
I don't want to pick on anyone, but I constantly see people in here writing of infractions they witnessed and I never hear them mentioning what the CO said when they reported it. If you see someone breaking the regulations, report them, everyone caries a phone with them now, just take down their license number and report them. If you can't get a Conservation Officer call the RCMP they are supposed to cover fish and game violations too, at least at the end of the day you'll know you tried to do something, if you witnessed someone breaking into your neighbors house you'd call the cops, why do hunters and fishermen tend to ignore people committing crimes against fish and wildlife that affect them directly.
Rant over, now yes, way to go Chris we need way more people like you on our rivers every day, thank you for your reports I always find them valuable. I'll be out trying for the Vedder Springs on the 1st. Chris you are definitely one of the people out there that are willing to put their money where their mouth is when it comes to getting things done and if it weren't for people like you the rivers around here would be a sorrier place indeed.
-
I think a lot of people think that it won't make a difference and that the response time will be too long. They are probably right....I'd still call, but its always in the back of my mind.
There are plenty of ways to handle people like that the old fashioned way and without physical confrontation :)
-
Another reely good thing to do is take pictures of them, the vehichle, and where they are at!
Because once u get a pic of them there is no way for them to get out of it!
Also good to do when u see people dumping garbage!
-
Sorry for the late update as I just got in from fishing.
I did look at the river before church this morning and visibility was only a few inches so I donot think it will be worth the cost of gas to drive out this way, I will give another update tomorrow, hopefully earlier.
Thanks for the remarks made above.
-
Mud this am, it is like a Winter flood, not just as high.
-
Water at Peach is still muddy, might have cleared a bit since this morning..... maybe 4" of visibility at most. I think it still may come up a bit with this hot spell. Hopefully it becomes fishable soon. ;)
-
Thanks Chris and Every Day.. It helps a lot..
-
One thing we can all be sure of is the accuracy of Mr. Gadsen's river condition reports. Unlike the meteorologists, his dedication and accurate information is greatly appreciated.Hopefully very soon we will see another journal addition.Thank-you Chris for your commitment to the fishing community.
-

they could kick you in head, pull a knife or beat you until you hand over the camera.
not worth it imo.
-
And when was the last time you heard of someone being kicked in the head, or beaten till a camera was turned over? ::) Sounds a bit over dramatic to me.
As the quote in your handle says "Sheep rise up", until then it is merely noisy complaining. Don't complain about it - DO something about it.
-
I don't think it's dramatic at all. People have been beaten up and in some cases killed for less. Too many loose cannons out there. Use a little discretion.
-
definatley agree with above post. There are other ways of handling the situation, but the point is if you don`t do anything about it then nothing will get done.
We can`t always rely on others. That being said, here`s a loud thanks to Mr. Gadsen for his dedication to the sport and to this forum.
I`m gonna hit the river on thursday and will let you know the conditions and how the fishing went.
See you all on the river!
-
If you do nothing then when the fish are gone, you'll only have yourselves to blame!!!
Sad so many of you live in a world of fear, mostly generated by the media and your own doing!!! Very Very SAD!!!
-
I don't think anyone here is advocating we do nothing. About 3 years back a fisherman saw another fisherman snagging cohos from the Cable Pool on the Capilano. He followed him back up to the parking lot and confronted him. The other fisherman turned on him and gave him a beating. Turned out later that the guy was suffering a mental disorder. It would have been more prudent and certainly less painful if he had just discretely record his licence and reported the infraction to the proper authorities.
-
I think it's fair to say that anyone who attacked you for trying to ID them for doing something illegal, is suffering from a mental disorder. I have witnessed and been subject to abuse from people like this rarely, but they are out there all the same. Most people realize they have been temporally overcome by the greed factor.
-
Getting back on topic. Toured the Chilliwack Valley today and the conditions above the slides were fishable but not very good below. Would be tough fishing as river is high leaving few good holding water.
Am posting a picture journal on the tour, with Rodney's help later
-
Lower still poor.
-
With the high cost of gas, Chris' reports are greatly appreciated. Keep them coming Chris.
-
Thanks Chris, your Vedder reports and journals are greatly appreciated and I've found them to be totally reliable everytime. Thank you.
-
Chris, thank you for your report update. You save us lots of $$$ in gas by staying home, and probably do more good for the planet than our premier's carbon credit tax for the environment. ;D ;D

Just got home from fishing on the Vedder.... First went up high to the top up at limit hole and the water is much nicer up there compared to down low where it is still a mudhole. Up high however is VERY high and fast right now so it is not really worth the trip. Towards 7 we found a spot and fished there for a while. Couldn't believe the amount of sockeye (I think) jumping around, either that or there are lots of Jacks (that arn't taking) in the Vedder right now.. Anyhow, if you are planning on going out, Upper (from Allsion pool up) has decent water visibility, but is running high and fast, and its very hard to find a spot. Anywhere from Allison Pool down is a crap shoot (high, muddy, fast) unless you can find clear water emptying into the main where the fish can clean their gills.
Good luck ;)
Dan
-
Went out again today for awhile... River is still running extremely high and fast. Lower is still chocolate brown and it has come up about 1-2 inches since yesterday. We tried our luck for Jacks on the fly rods today and my friend ended up hooking a bullet sockeye, which he lost after a very brief 10 second fight when it snapped his 4 pound test ::) I also had a very nice hit, but didnt manage to connect on it. We were using black wolly buggers with a gold bead head and olive wolly buggers with a gold bead head. Saw a ton of sockeye jumping around and also saw 1 Spring roll. Not really worth the trip out unless you do some exploring on the upper river as the spot we were in gets crowded very fast. Don't expect the river to come down very soon, we had thunderstorms today with pretty heavy rain and tomorrow morning we are expected to have rain as well, and all day Sunday. After that temps are suppose to climb again.
Good luck if you decide to go :)
Dan
-
Visibility about 5 inches in the Lower today.
-
I appreciate your heart for sharing Chris.
With the big change in the waters this year God seems to be up to something new in protecting His rivers and fish.
-
I thought that was DFO's job?
-
I thought that was DFO's job?
God got tired of DFO's ineptitude at managing and protecting our fisheries, so He took the matter in His own hands. ;)
This extremely high water levels in most rivers should be good news for the salmon. May many of trhem get thorugh, spawn and prosper. :)
-
Actually have been giving it a little more thought and the high waters are more likely related to leprechauns trying to increase rainbow production. More rain = more rainbows....the higher water levels are just a byproduct.
-
Then it's a good thing God made those leprechauns.
-
LOL :D good one !!!!
-
every day ::)targeting springs on the fly rod with 4 pound test? sound like another tale to me. the river is far to high to fly fish or gear fish no matter where you were! if you want a steelhead smolt thread just start it already!
-

First of all I wasnt fishing the 4 pound test (that would be why I put the rolling eyes after I said it snapped his test).... my friend was and yes he wanted to catch some smolts, he hooked the sockeye by accident. I was running 10 pound test and missed my only hit (and yes I was going for jacks). On July 4th (Friday) I went out again, same spot, and missed another hit on the fly rod, this time with a black streamer patter (And yes I have a spot that is very fishable, because I live on the river and can find fishable spots). I wouldnt reccomend giving advice (to me) when I fished the Ved 3 days in a row, and saw a lot jumping (sockeye, some spring jacks) where I was, and even had some success (sockeye probably). I've been camping at Cultus Lake since last night and it was pouring down rain up there from 8 o clock on. I'de expect it to be coming down this way and if it does, the amount of rain that was coming down will probably boost the river at least another 2 inches. Was starting to look better on Friday but Im assuming it will be up again tomorrow.
-
Keep up the good work Everyday. Most of us appreciate good info.
-
Coming down through Hope last night never saw such heavy rain. not sure how it effected the Vedder.
As a side note I was told today a fellow was apprahended by DFO for killing a sockeye on the Vedder yesterday. Observe and Report was involved, so it does work. Remember if you see illegal activity report it and not just complain about it.

I heard that too Chris.... I wish people would figure out which type of fish is which instead of just killing everything they catch. I'm pretty happy that guy got caught, but I dont think it will be the last in that area (lots of people are fishing it) as sockeye are jumping everywhere and me and my friend have already had hook-ups with 1. Just make sure you know what it is BEFORE you killl it.
-
Ok another report.....
Lower river is looking much better now with about a 10-12 inches visibility in the lower river. Didn't hit the upper today. It is still quite high but has dropped, River is also dropping now with a vengeance and is looking like it should be fishable very soon, if not already. Saw a bunch of guys targetting Springs already in the main channels today. Didnt see any jumps or rolls from anything today, but from what I understand they normally start becoming active later in the evening. Most people out there right now are using shrimp and roe. LOTS of people targetting the Steelhead smolts, and from what I understand, lots of people are killing them and throwing them in the bushes just as they are leaving, deciding after the fact they are not worth keeping. PLEASE do not do this, if you absolutely decide on killing one, at least keep it and eat it, don't throw it in the bushes...... >:(
On another note... talked to a friend on the river today who has been fishing since the river opened. Apparentally the Sockeye are keening in on shrimp later in the evening. If you are going to be using shrimp for Springs it might be a good idea to switch to a different bait, as these are Chilliwack Lake sockeye (Not Culuts Lake, like so many people think) and still need to travel a long ways. Hooking and playing them puts uneeded pressure on them, expecially if the temps get high again, not to mention there is no retention on them so why even bother.
Cheers, Good Luck ;)
Dan
-
not to mention there is no retention on them so why even bother.
for the thrill of a good fight? fishing has never been about retention for me personally. they fight extremely hard for there size and as long as they stay in the water they should be ok.
lots of jiggers out on the river... walked by 2 guys bouncing with 3 foot leaders... nice. no surprise though, red springs on the vedder can be picky and lining has become all to common.
-
on a side note, I have bottom bounced as you say for certain types of fish, and I see no negativity in it as long as it is done properly. Other places in the world call that method "drifting' if i'm not mistaken. 3 foot leaders I assume is okay depending on depth of water and clarity etc. Now I'm certainly not preaching what we do on the fraser is acceptable (10 feet leaders) on a river such as the vedder, but if done correctly can and is very effective. Just my two sense, not trying to start or imply anything :) Will hit the river tomorrow and give you an update. Cheers to all

This is true, they do alot of "bottom bouncing" or "drifting" (as the call it down in the US) for Steelhead in many of the rivers that are in the states. There is nothing wrong with it as long as you keep your leader short (1-3 feet max). This can be an effective strategy and I have been told its good for Red springs on the Vedder too when they are down in the deep holes, as its hard to get a float-fishing setup down that deep. I do agree however that if you run into a good hole, dont post (at least the area anyways), just tell a few friend you know won't screw you over.
-
the people im talking about are well known to the majority of good ettiquette fishers on here, when the fish(springs) get holed up can be some of the BEST fishing of the year , then these idiots come out and well..... youll see at the limit hole in about 3-4weeks, dark red cherries litter the beach, i urge all to witness this abortion and let them know these fish bite, especially the 12 ft leader/3 ouncers. Youll recognize some of these people as there perennials
I wish they would just close this area all together. This is the last possible area where they fish are able to stage before heading into the hatchery or further up river. During low water they get trapped until the next rain fall and the idiots take advantage of this and snag away. Was there watching once and it made me sick. The CO's should just park their butts there and they would make alot of money. In fact if they put one there and one at Keith wilson bridge they could make enough money to fund more officers to cover the rest of the river.
-
C'mon I did check this thread to see if the Chilliwack system was fishable yet (fishable as in the fish can see the bait well enough to make a conscious decision and proceed to take it in their mouth as if to feed). Let's just start a no holds barred snagging thread somewhere else in the forum and leave this one to water conditions.

Yes I aggree and visibility is about 12 inches this morning, spotted some nice water too with the dropping river levels. I am not sure if the hot weather coming again it will rise once again
In all respect I think the flossing issue as been discussed so much in the last few years and I was one of the main contributors in the discussion. I now feel it could be left alone here as FOC and MOE is well aware of the problems through a series of meetings and discussions. It is now in their court to deal with it but of course only my thoughts but please, if some wish to discuss it do it on another thread. I may annoy a few with this comment but I guess I can live with it. Anyway I am going fishing and to get on topic there is some nice water starting to shape up 5 minutes from my house. ;D ;D ;D

Thanks Chris. I am hoping that the water levels do not rise as I want to take my almost 7 year old out with his fly rod. He has tied up some nice flies that he wants to try out. In fact he ties pretty well and I hope he gets one or 2.

River looking good. About 1-2 feet of visibility at Peach/Lickman Road. Holes starting to appear but many are unreachable because water is still slightly too high. Should be good sometime next week, but worth a shot if your really itching to get out. Also has come down around a foot since last Friday. Whole river has changed, Peach road had the main flowing on pretty much the opposite side of the river now, and about half way to Lickman the river splits forming 2 big and deep main channels. So make an intersting year as far as finding new spots ;)
-
Visibility improving in the Lower river but needs to get better for my liking. No reports of chinooks to my knowledge, none in the hatchery.
-
The Master got one yesterday, on roe. No love for me.
The mid-river looked pretty good, with 3ft. of vis. Lots of sockeye surfacing. Lots of smolts.
Please ensure that you do not target sockeye.
-
So not to target the sockeye...what terminal gears work for the red meat springs?
Tx.
-
I hooked 2 yesterday and missed on one more... Snapped both off, both jumped, one was about 15 pnds, other was about 20. Also had one attack my float. Heard of around 4 other fish in last 3 days. Saw 6 Big boys surface and around 15 sockeye, found the holding water ;D ;D Water is perfect for me... some nice holes starting to show ;)
Tight Lines ;)
Dan
PS. 1st spring was hooked on prawn (so was the missed one), 2nd Spring was reb/balc wool combo. Good luck!

Looks almost ready for my centerpin to scream!!!
Anyone with more pictures from the Vedder?
-
Is that Lickman area?
-
Around that area.
-
I drove by the river to have a look today, and there are a few changes... Some of my productive steely water is gone, but other new and better runs have replaced them...
The vis was near zero down below, saw a couple people fishing smolts, but nothing really happening. I didn't bother driving up top, as today was family / truck service day, so no time to spend on the river...
Cheers,
Nicole
-
Question, if there is near zero visibility in the water, will fish still be able to see your presentation, or if you're using roe or scented bait, can and will they smell and react to it? Or is our best bet is to wait until it clears atleast a foot of visibility or try different water?
Thanks for your help
-
Visis was well over a foot last night when I came home at Peach. LOTS of socks jumping, not much else. Heading out pretty quick here.
Good luck and Tight lines 8)

-
I was rafting the river yesturday and went through the upper and the visiblity was a couple feet maybe more but the river was packed in that area. Saw one fish on the ride down, most likly a jack as it wasn't very big
-
Did a tour of the Chilliwack River Valley this evening and had planned to give the chinooks a try, I even had fresh bugs. However I spent too much time picking up garbage and bottles ???and ran out of time. Stopped at the Limits Hole as darkness was closing in and saw a girl land a sockeye that had not bitten, ::)it danced on the rocks before it was released after I told them that it could not be retained, they seemed to know that. :-\
They were both pretty excited as it was her first salmon ever. Her fishing partner had to hand line the sockeye in as the spinning reel had seized up on her.
Visibility was great there but I though it was then a little over a foot at Tamihi. I ran into kingpin at McDonald's at dark and he said it was better down lower as I guess some of the clay settles out when it reaches down that way.
I may try in the morning. :-\
-
clay won't settle out in the vedder or fraser, it is a fine enough particle size that in labs, it has been predicted that under the right circumstance, it may take thousands of years to settle clay out of water. It's too bad that someone won't try to cap these clay banks.

won't that make it too easy to fish?
-
Its never too easy to fish ;) Even when you think you have it mastered, it'll come back to bite you ;D
-
maybe its a good thing that the clay reduces visability , it acts as a kind of natural conservation of fish . ie: bad visability=less fishing pressure . :-\
-
oh ... did not know that ... :-[ . learn something new everyday i guess .
-
Fished hard most of the day yesterday. Fished two known spring runs mid-river then headed down for lunch. After lunch walked a section from Peach down with a few casts in between. Then dropped into Browne for a last run of the day. Vis throughout the river was about a foot. Didn't see any springs or sockeye landed, hooked, or jump even.
-
how are conditions looking?
-
3 feet in lower, didnt fish upper. A friend landed a big sockeye on roe and I lost a fish on wool. All in 2 hours, also saw ALOT of springs jump today, probably around 10 in the time we were out. Still a lot of sockeye around too.
-
Whats the retention on the reds in the vedder? Obviously no retention on the sockeye.
-
http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/recfish/Freshwater/region2_e.htm
-
what is the clarity on the upper, have any moved in up top?
-
http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/recfish/Freshwater/region2_e.htm
So if i'm reading this correctly, assuming there are no in season changes (which i couldn't find), then the retention is
4 per day, only 1 can be over 62cm.
correct?
the reason i ask is it just seems a lot to me... especially since there's a size restriction, lower limit on the fraser.
-
That's my interpretation as well.
-
Wow....4 per day....very optimistic on the part of DFO. It is a 10 fish yearly limit though, that hasn't changed so whether you limit out in 3 days or 5 days out, you still have the 10 fish total. To that end it doesn't matter so much.
-
So I take it Jacks count as well toward the 10?And Is that 10 in one area then you can go to another area and get another 10? Just curious would never do it ;D
-
Jacks donnot count towards you 10 fish on the back of your liscence, if its under 62 cm it is fine. Anything over 62 cm has to be recorded. As far as DFO giving a 4 fish limit on the Vedder, it is because this is a strictly kill fishery that was implanted to give a good eating fish on the Vedder. There is no wild run, or at least there isnt suppose to be.
-
Quick new update......
Went out tonight for around 3 hours. Hooked 1 Spring in 15-20 pnd range and 2 sockeye. Was in one spot for an hour and in that time I saw 3 Springs hooked (none landed) and 7 sockeye hooked and 5 landed. Weapon of choice for me was roe (pro-cured red). Others were hooking the sockeye on pink/white wool with a red bead above it. Heard of 6 other springers landed today and another 4 (on top of that) lost. Others were also hooked on roe and silver spoons. Water clarity is really nice in lower, between 3 and 4 feet. Water is dropping fast with lost of slots and pools appearing. Good time to get out. Once again TONS of sockeye rolling and I'de say another 5 Springs for sure, and some others I thought were springs, but not too sure.
Good luck , Tight Lines ;)

You can only retain one adult per day on the vedder. An adult chinook on the vedder is one the measures 62cm or bigger. Only adults get recorded on the back of your license and any chinook on the vedder that measures under 62cm is considered a jack and it does not need to be recorded. You can only keep 10 adults per year combined from all fresh water systems.
-
AHh right thanks for correcting.
-
Conditions looked good today when I checked, a few anglers out. I made a few casts at the Boulder Hole before I got restless and moved on. The first week that I have not had fresh fish since the chinooks opened a few weeks ago. Saw a fellow snag a sockeye below the Vedder Bridge. Saw two chinooks that had been taken at the Limit Hole, most people long lining in the fast water there.
Stopped for a visit with the hatchery staff, actually wanted a coffee, no Tims up that way. ;D
Around a dozen chinooks in the channel and 2 to 3 sockeye. One chinook was sporting a red wool tie in its dorsal fin. ::)
Picked a few wild blackberries and saw a bear enjoying the same, I moved on. Got a nice picture of a Junco (snow bird I call them) nest with 4 eggs in it, will check back for another picture, hopefully to catch the little ones after they hatch.
I saw them cutting the brush alone the RW of the Chilliwack River Valley lower down, should they be doing that when birds are still nesting?
Water conditions should remain good this weekend in the Chilliwack Vedder River with the dropping water levels, maybe I can get a fresh fish for the table too. ;D Maybe I should write The Journal too, lots of stories the last month but hard to find the time when doing so much fishing and I said to myself, I need to figure out how to post the pictures first that should help make The Journal more interesting so The Journal may be a little ways away yet. ::) ???

hey chris
i only want to know when was the last time you went to chilliwack lake ?
got some questions :
1. is it a good picnic place ? and is there lots of picnic tables
2. is it busy on the weekend or so so ?
thanks

Usually very busy on the weekend, I saw a sign today while I was at the Chilliwack Hatchery that said campsite full. I have never checked out the picnic area etc..

As I noted in my report above I made yesterday there are fish around.

Hey Chris,
Do you know what's happening above Wilson Road? Are they doing more than rebuilding the dyke?
-
Hey Chris,
Do you know what's happening above Wilson Road? Are they doing more than rebuilding the dyke?
As far as I know it is just for flood protection of the Wilson Road area homes. I believe it is being done in an environmentally friendly manner with fish habitat compensation involved.
Did you notice anything out of order?

Didn't stop to look in any detail, just driving up to Tamihi and back. That stretch is single lane controlled by signal lights presumably for the duration of the construction period.
Thanks.

Seems to be about time to thank Chris again for his efforts on our rivers, both in conservation and encouraging others to get out and fish! Never mind the reduced fuel consumption his reports provide!
Also noticed he is an advocate for highway safety...noticed a Chris Gadsen quote in the Hope newspaper last week about the accident on the Musicfest Friday....
Noticed he has an online sidekick these days....Everyday deserves a thanks too.
