I was given a gift of a cane/bamboo rod and wanted to see if there was any savvy fishers out there who may know what type(brand) it is from only a written description. Here are the specs:
It's a spinning rod, 5ft length.
the only markings on the rod are: a coat of arms with the initial " J" near the articulation of the rod to the reel seat. There is no more info as this area is worn. The colours of the coat are red and silver.
The rod is stored in a wooden box with dugouts for the rod, assorted flies, lures along with a package of snelled hooks. This package displays "made in Japan"
The box also contains a hand bailer with line and a pencil float. That's it, that's all.

The box the rod came in makes me think it is an old Amy & Navy combo. The handle should be reversible, there by converting it from fly to spinning rod and back. The letter you see on the rod blank is the fly line designation; before the invention of our modern poly coated lines all fly lines were rated by letter code.

My dad gave me one of those setups for my 7th or 8th birthday, some 40 odd years ago, wish I still had it. I saw one at an antique dealer a year or two ago, it looked to be complete and in good shape, the asking price was around C$450.00. Newsmans' description, and yours, pretty well guarantees that they are the same. Afraid I don't have any more info than that.

$450 !!!! Wow, I have three; use to have four but I traded one with an antique dealer in Salmon Arm for a 1piece steel rod. All of mine are refinished and I still use two of them for fishing Crappies. I guess the kids don't get to use those old canes any more.

Thanks for the tips so far, still looking for the brand name/manufacture. Anyone else with input is greatly appreciated.

heres a quote from a site I found that deals with old cane rods.

Years ago I bought a similar outfit that was either a spinning or fly rod, it came in a wood box with flys and a handline, I bought it for novelty sake and paid around 20 dollars.
