Title: Alta Lake, April 26th 2008
Post by: Rodney on April 26, 2008, 10:44:13 PM
After a fine day of lake fishing on the Sea to Sky corridor last Tuesday (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=17689.0), I was eager to get back as we are getting closer to the Interior lake season. The timing was just perfect as Snapperhead fired me an email and informed me that the lake in his backyard had melted. I gathered up the usual gang to see who would want to go, but two guys' trucks are not happy so they had to stay home and sulk. ;D After some serious persuassion, Fishersak decided to get his pram out with me today. Just after midnight, I got the message from Fishersak, "I can't go! No license!" ::) It took awhile to convince him to buy it online. Finally he wanted to, then apparently the online licensing site does not like Mac very much. :P Eventually I was able to register for him, get him to log in and pay, then I exported the PDF license file and sent it to him for print-out. Finally, we were ready to go in the morning. ::)

At first light, I meant, 8am, we were on our way up. Traffic was slow going all the way to Squamish due to construction. 11:00am, the boats were in the water and ready to go.

The target species today were rainbow and cutthroat trout. We used mostly what have produced for us in the past - Olive, brown and black leech patterns. They are fished either by stripping on a sink tip, or freely suspended under an indicator.

The first four hours were extremely uneventful, except of my two bites. ::) The first one took the indicator for a quick dip, which I completely missed. The second one was a light tug as I stripped the fly in. I barely pulled it and discovered that the fly had disappeared once I brought the line up. :o Time to practice some knot tying tonight. :-X

At one point I spotted a few rises in a shallow bay. I ventured over there and found that it was only 5 or 6ft deep. As I looked in the water, a large salmon-like shadow darted away. :o There went my big cuttie. :'(

The day started out like this.

By 4pm, it was like this.

This was almost a good thing, as we finally found some biting fish when the wind picked up and the sky clouded over. Fishersak was the first one into a couple of quick fights that never made it to the boat. I then connected with one with some heavy head shakes, which suggested that it was a cutthroat trout, but we never found out as it too shook itself off the hook. ::)

A few misses later, Fishersak finally managed to keep a rainbow trout on long enough and brought it to hands.

The bites went on until 5:30pm. I managed to bring in a couple more rainbow trout, but they were both in the fingerling category. :P

A couple more weeks, it will wake up. :)

I had some issues with online licensing on my mac as well.  I dont think its mac but the safari browser it uses.  I ended up just using one of my windows boxes.  It's always nice to see a big shape in the water even if you don't catch it, isn't it!?  It's enough to turn "ok actions slow, lets head out after a couple more casts" to a semi amnesic state where you don't remember how bad the fishing has been right up until that point...then of course you end up staying too long and the wife calls, wondering why you are late for dinner yet AGAIN :)

I remember some pics you posted of some nice cutties you got out of there i believe last year, or maybe 2 years ago...how do they fight?

They fight "sluggishly" compared to rainbow trout. The headshakes and dives are similar to chars (bull trout, brook trout). Colourful, very typical for Taylor 3Ns.

Hey Rodney, we ended up going there on the  27th, and besides a few small rainbows, Tomas was the only one to catch a cutt...

It was very slow!

We were also checked by COs as well, Tomas' first time ever in three years...

It's been something like 5 years since I've been checked.

Seems the squamish corridor is better patrolled than the chilliwack area...

Cheers,
Nicole

Checked by a CO on the water or land? :o

I've been checked by CO's and DFO officers at least a dozen times in the last two years. It must be an internal plan trying to get me ticketed... ;D

We probably be going back there in two weekends from now. This coming weekend will be all about bass. :D

We were fishing the point nearest the dock at lakeside, and they motioned us to come over for a check...

Here's the cutty btw:

Have fun with the bASS, I'm gunning for some steel this weekend now that everyone will be off the vedder ;)

Cheers,
Nicole

Nice fish, look at the spots near the abdomen.

Maybe we won't get any bass and end up getting big cutthroats. ;D The cuttroat trout fishing is apparently good as expected. They put a lot more yearlings into St Mary's than Alta. :)

I just need to stop fishing near you. I think it's you who keeps phoning me in during the pink salmon season. ;D

Academics tackle racial profiling

Surrey Now

Tuesday, April 29, 2008

Kwantlen University College professor Jessie Horner and other academics both local and out-of-town took on racial profiling at borders at a conference dealing with that topic at Kwantlen's Surrey campus last Friday afternoon.

The day-long conference, which was open to the public, aimed to raise awareness of the issue "and encourage a positive dialogue on how to address it."

Among the topics discussed were "Opposing Racial Profiling in Fortress America," followed by "Racial Profiling and Ethnic Stereotyping: Muslim Terrorists and Illegal Aliens."

 Hey fintail,

I walked all three lakes last night (alpha, nita, alta) as they are a ten minute walk from my front door ;D and other than some ice near wayside park on alta lake they are ice free. Im going to fish alta tonight I think after work... sounds like it has been slow but the weather is finally starting to cooperate. Fished alpha last week and didnt get any love. The water was FREEZING. have heard of some guys having luck off the dock on alpha with little spinners.

derek

Nice to hear you got out for a Alta fish.

Nicole

Great cutthroat pic !!!!

Whistler has its own CO to deal with all the Black Bear issues,so he's out and about through out the Valley.
Another CO ,Chris Doyle is also very present in the Sea to Sky  and see him alot in the area.

Here's a nice Alta Pic ,  my brothers first Cutthroat.

Those alta fish are really pretty!  Great pic snapperhead.

If you fish where the CO's are always around, you're bound to get checked a lot!  The weirdest check I ever got was fishing the little smokey up in northern alberta with my brother, we had hiked in from the road, nobody else was there that day and we heard something coming through the bush.   It was a CO who had hiked in about 15 min to come find us.  Good tracking skills!  We had a nice chat with him and turns out it was early season, not that many people were out yet and he used spotting our vehicle as an excuse to go for a little walk :)
