is a 50lbs thrust minn kota an over kill for a 12ft princecraft? costco has them for $338. it's the maximizer model. sounds like a good deal but wondering if it's too much motor for what i need. any expirence with these motors?

I have a 55lbs thrust on my 14 Alum.it can raise the bow.it would be arround a 6 horse gas,I would suggest around a 30lbs thrust would do just fine,if they cost about the same go for the big one.
-
haha a 55lb thrust electric is not equivalent to a 6hp ;D

A little overkill, but that's not a bad thing. The only draw back to going with a bigger motor is at full power it will draw more power than a smaller one. But for the mot part you probably won't be going full out. The maximizer motors are real nice and if you don't mind the extra cost are much better than any regular electric. The have inffinite control over your speed, alot nicer than just 5 to choose from, and on any setting lower than about 75% they draw way less power, so your battery last alot longer.

try minn kota's web site. they have a hp equivalent chart as well as suggested motors for boats.
-
I use that exact model on my 10 foot Spratley not overkill at all. I love it.
-
you cant really go "overkill" speed wise with an electric motor
-
get the 55, that's what I have for my 12 footer, you will not regret it...
And make sure to get a MinnKota Maxxum... much better on the battery...
Cheers,
Nicole

Nicole is right......the Maxxum model is great; I had an Endura and my battery would be drained in 3 1/2 or 4 hours..... I ran my Maxxum for 8 1/2 hours yesterday!
-
went with the 50lbs maxxum from costco. heavyer than i thought but will be fine. thanks for the input and suggestions.
-
that's a good deal. I remember paying $300 for my 33lbs maxxum model. $38 more for 17lbs extra thrust...
-
Would the 55lb maxxum be to much power for a 9 ft pontoon boat?
-
There's a you tube vid of someone with a 25hp on a pontoon..
I think 55 would be perfect, nice and fast when you need it, just don't kill your batt.
-
Could I stick it on my float tube? ;D
