Quantum for me.
I bought a quantum 12 years ago (100.00 US). At the time it was their best reel and I was pumped to use it. I took it with me on a week-long fishing trip. Half way through the first retreive, the whole gearing completely blew up. I ended up fishing the rest of the trip with a $15 spinning reel from the bait shop.
When I got back, I contacted Quantum and they were rude and wouldn't even look at the reel. They told me that if the dealer wouldn't do anything for me, then they wouldn't either. Lucky for me, I bought it at Cabelas and exchanged it for a Shimano. I have since taken the oath to never buy a Quantum.

I bought my son a okuma salmon spinner last summer for my son. Lasted 10 min and broke. Piece of junk. I personally like Abu - goood reliable, fairly priced.
-
I love the Abu Garcia with Embassader reel. Great reel, payed a fair price and it hasnt blown on me yet after 5 months of fishing it in harsh conditions. I do not personally like Shimano reels that much (Some are really great though). I've gone through 2 in the last year and a half, one was a corsair and i forget what the other one was lol....
-
it must be the tica reel that i bought in singapore pretty bad reel or maybe i can't use it ? lol
my luna is still the best !

The worst is always the cheapest with reels.
Wal-mart spinning reel: $9.99
lasted about 3weeks which and about 30pinks, isn't as bad as I thought it would be.
Good for the girl friend, that way you can break on on every trip out ;D

B-Rod,,,,,,,, let me fix you up with a Real Reel some day and make your day. The whole Diawa line of level winds are BAD.....Dargs just don't hold up . You truly get what you PAY for........

corsair
-
no name spinning reel i bought in the states for $15 so i could fish bass for 3 days. Everything else has been top notch
-
Quantum spinning rod and reel combo which cost me about $50. I guess it's hard to get quality if you're not willing to spend the $$.
-
corsair
I second that!
-
corsair
I second that!
I third that! I got my gears burnt out by a Spring on the Fraser....
-
i would have to say the pflueger trion
-
Shimano Cardiff, I've used baitcasters for years and the guy at Sportsmans said I needed more practice.
-
Quantum bait caster back in the day, used it once and put back in the box.
-
i would have to say the pflueger trion
What was wrong with the trion? So far mine has performed well.
-
I don't gear fish any more, but.......
A few years back I bought a Okuma reel for salmon fishing in the Fraser, first day out, it was so full of silt from the line being reeled in that it would only cast 1/4 the distance it did at the start of the day.
Nice reel, but for the silty Fraser, the machining tolerances are WAY to close.
Just my 2 cents

Sam, I'm interested in knowing more about your experiences with Okuma. I have two Okuma Classics that i use for sturgeon fishing that i picked up as part of a relatively cheap setup. Been planning on upgrading the reels to shimano tld20's...

The loop CLW...
Bought one for Tomas two years ago, and it's given us nothing but problems... Glue and composite don't seem to bond well. We were on a remote river and the two halves of the spool came apart...
Backing EVERYWHERE! It was a nightmare.
The reel now has so much crazy glue holding it together its not funny.

first off, the the shimano reel you are talking about is not ment for, lets call it, force feeding fraser river springs.you know the ones that make us proud, good fishermen.not to mention all the sand blowing around and not properly taking care of your reels like oiling all the time and after use backing off you drag
-
a zebco, about 30 years ago when i didn't know any better.
-
40 lb braid attached to a 2 x 4 used to catch carp in the Grand river in Ontario!I was 10 at the time and we were poor.

corsair
The Shimano Corsair was the first level wind reel I ever used, thought it was the greatest thing in the world, that was until I actually hooked a decent sized salmon lol.... found out that a good drag DOES make a big difference, the Corsair has a terrible drag that is anything but smooth !! lost many fish because of that... after about 6 months of use it started making really funny noises everytime I would cast.. got it serviced, lasted about two days before the noises now joined by clunks came back :) followed by peices of the level wind falling into the river lol... needless to say I bought the Calcutta and have never had any problems !! My Corsair has lived in the bottom of a cardboard box for the last 5 years... I guess one day I may try and peice it back together and give it to some poor unfortunate soul ;D ;D ;D

Zebco because a family member bought it for me when i was a kid and a Quantum which I bought once, it crapped out within a month.
-
Bought a low profile Abu bait cast reel for my dad to fish bass/trout thing lasted a week. My big Abu on the other hand is a great reel 3 rough seasons on it and its still strong as new
-
any of the Walmart specials I bought so many years ago when I couldn't afford better. I had most of the reels blow up on me and also the rods >:(
Corsair also was horrible enough I just tossed it into the Fraser one day after my rod blew up on a sturgeon :(
Sage 1600 series fly reel. have they ever heard of a disc drag that has more range then fully on or fully off !!! wtf ? !
since I learned these few lessons every reel I have owned or own performs exactly how it should or excels my expectation.
Buy quality and you will actually save money over buying crap each year
-
Quantum for me as well - learned my lesson on cheap reels - never again!

Abu c4,use one season on Fraser ,gear was worn out, took it for services ,replaced with c3 parts.fish for 3times on veddar ,worm gear also worn out.

:-\ :-\ I still have two ABU 6500C3 (12 and 10 years old). Didn't have any issues on river. Just doing regular maintenance.
-
when I used to bottom bounce for hours and hours each outing I would burn out a pawl/wormgear every season. all those super long casts moving at high speeds then reeling it all in is going to wear things out, its to be expected. Now that I usually don't have to fish more then an hour to get my 2 sockeye my pawl/wormgear is going on its 5th year. My BBing Abu's are not used for any other type of fishing. My wife has an upgraded Abu as her river reel which also gets used by friends at times has not needed any work since I had it upgraded 6-7yrs ago.
If you remember to CLEAN out your wormgear after every few trips you shouldn't be burning out the pawl so often doing regular float fishing. Take care of your gear and it will be there to work for you every time. Use gun cleaner as it lifts the debris so you can wipe it away OR what I do is take the reel apart and soak it and clean it so it looks new and then re lube it once its back in the reel. It pays to know how to take your reel apart and fix it.
example - my dads very old Abu 5001 stopped reeling in one morning on the river. I gave him my rod to fish while I sat down to see if I could fix it. I took my hand towel and laid it out (you don't want to be dropping/losing parts in the gravel) and proceeded to look it over. What I found was a broken spring that re engages the spool. I went and got my pliers and his and stretched a bit of the spring straight so I could make a new hook on the end. put the reel back together and Voila, that reel is still working now and its going into its 5th season with my modified spring.

assorted Hardy's (St John, Marquis and Golden Prince) from the 80s. Two problems - pawl rivets and the spool seizing on the spindle. No longer have the St John. The Golden Prince has been fine after replacing 2 spindles in the 1st 2 years of ownership. The Marquis still develops loose rivets - I don't use it much.
I also have a Loop CLW - close to 10 years and the frame came apart. I glued it back together with a slow set epoxy. So far so good.
-
there was a re-call on the corsair before. There seems to be drag and noise related re-call. They will give you credit, or exchange to a new reel equal to the corsair.
I helped a couple of friends to get credit as well as exchange to another one (forgot the model name that shimano sent).
As for credit, I believe it was $50 for the silver and $100 for the gold corsair. Maybe the other way around. It was a while ago and I don't think they are doing that anymore.
-
My Okuma baitcaster was the worst, reel came off the seat fighting a fish on the Vedder. Okuma replaced the reel, new reel lasted a week before it started having gear problems.
for gear reels I only use Shimano now but they are mostly collecting dust since I got my Islander.

Ross Momentum. Drag was inconsistent and screeched on both I owned, spindle flexes letting the spool rub the frame. Ross was easy to deal with when I sent it back, but the drag problem returned with both reels. Unacceptable level of performance for $600 range pricetags. Now fishing Bauers, much better. Bauer drags are the smoothest of anything I've tried. Customer service is very good.
-
What do you guys think about the corvalus?
-
Ross Momentum. Drag was inconsistent and screeched
This sounds like my Bauer M2 superlite. The original spool does this. Sent it in but they just sent it back with more lube and the problem continued next trip. Found that the spare spool I had bought but not used works better. Obviously it is the original spool that has a problem. I will try again with more detailed instructions.
-
I don't know what the worst reel I have owned because when I was young I owned a lot of cheap junkers. What I do know is that in 1976 I was given an ABU 6500C for my birthday and 37 years later it is still going strong after catching 1000's of fish. The new Abu's can't hold a candle to the 1970's models that still had brass gears. My advise is to go on Ebay and look for any Abu's in good condition that were built in that era or earlier and I think you will find that they will outlast any of the current levelwinds.

They only chatter if you don't maintain them. For $35 you can upgrade to the newer spool-side drag material, its beige (as opposed to grey) and have the 2 roller clutch upgraded to a much stronger 4 roller clutch. Make sure you're using the oil Bauer suggest. With maintenance, Bauer drags outperform all the other high end drags I've owned... Ross, high end Sage, Islander.
The Ross Momentum surged bad- full drag to almost freespool and back again. Owned two of them, returned to Ross, they fixed the first one, but the surging came back, had them both serviced again, then sold them. Lost a few springs and steelhead because of it. There are better reels for the money. I don't mean to bash Ross, their customer service is great and lots of guys I know like them, but steer clear of the Momentum's carbon fibre drag.
I now own a Bauer carbon fibre drag (CFX spey) in addition to several cork Bauers and the CFX drag is butter. Taken a couple big fish on it so far and been 100% satisfied with the performance of the said reel. The Bauer is $100 cheaper too. Nicer fit and finish too IMO.
-
Love my click-pawl spey and fly reels as well as my centerpins.
Simple internally and almost nothing that can go wrong unless you drop and bend it which wouldn't be the reels fault.
-
Trophy Winterrun centerpin reel........seized up after 3 casts at the Chehalis. Though I still believe that I got a lemon.

X2 on older ABU, I have 1975 Garcia ABU 6000C best baitcasting reel I ever own. I also, have custom builted ABU 5000C and 4500C made by late Mike (Mike's Reel Repair).
