A 2007 survey of spawning kokanee in Okanagan Lake counted a total of almost 300,000 fish, the highest count since 1981. Improved lake level management, habitat protection, and restoration were the factors that contributed to the huge increase. The majority of them were shore spawners.
Now that the numbers are coming back it'll be interesting to see if the fish can attain the same sizes they did back in the early eighties. When I lived in Kelowna back then I spent the majority of my time focussing on bows in the upper level lakes but I did have a friend who used to fish the Peachland area a lot and caught large numbers of kokanee, many in the 5 plus lb. range which is sockeye size.

Maybe its time to throw some Gerrards in there ?

Not sure which strain of Rainbow is in there now but they can get to be quite a size and hopefully that fishery follows in the same path as the recovering Kokanee.

Its really a great thing. Its like Alouette and its kokanee pop. There is a short article in the new BC Outdoors about Alouette. They let 70000 - 90000 smolts over the dam last year so I wonder how many sockeye will come back ?
