My gf's uncle is giving me a 12' er so i can have more access to fish local lakes and i'm starting to do some research on what kind of electric motor i should slap on her.
Any reccomendations would be great, as I'm a complete newb to boating. I dont need a license right? hah
well thanks! :)

Minn Kota 40lb with Maximizer.
Excellent motor and the right size.
Readily available and i believe Mikes reel repair does repairs.
Not that i know of any that have ever failed.

Another vote for the Maximizer 40lbs would be nice.
Just a couple of notes to keep in mind.
-No elctric motor will get you above hull speed, so going bigger will only drain the battery faster.
-get a good deep cycle battery and a good automatic charger. Keep it fully charged when possible.
-the maximizer models will make the battery last 2-3 times longer than a normal model but not when used at 100%
-yes you do need a licence

Smaller ones work good too . i got a Minkota 24lb and it has no problem pushing my 14 ft Princecraft . If I want to get up on plane , I use the outboard.

Penn, 24lb thrust on a 14fter, you're a very patient man. ;D I have a 30lb thrust on a 10 footer and most of the time I am very satisfied with it, occasionally I get a bit frustrated in the wind, but that's probably because I was too lazy to make sure the battery was charged. ;D Derp, I was either email or pm Nicole since she is a Minn Kota rep. She would be able to tell you exactly which models you should be looking at.

thanks everyone :)

I bought mine at costco and it has worked great for years. Just keep your deep cycle battery fully charged before you go and it will last all day if you don't run it on hi the time. Just trolling it will last about 5.5 hours.
-
Remember to charge your battery everytime after use. Fully charging battery everytime after use will have longer lifespan.
I use a Maxxum 55 and run with 2 deep cycle batteries (in parallel). I can fish all day without problem. (12'6" Zodiac Fish'n Hunt)

A "me too" post for you/
Wait for the spring stuff to come out at Costco, Great price for a Minn Kota 50 lb'er with Maximizer and battery life indicator. I ran an old 24lb thrust ' Kota for 12 years with out issue.
I use mine on a 12ft lund, loaded with another person and enough "soda" and junk food to topple a large horse and can still get a good weekend out of the largest deep cycle Energizer battery from Wal-Mart. (they put the batteries on sale there every couple of months)

most common mistake ppl make when getting a motor is getting one that is too small
:)
that being said, get the biggest motor you can afford. take it from me, ive tried them all, and surely enough i slowly moved up the ladder and got rid of all the smaller motors.
