Title: 2008 Vedder River conditions
Post by: chris gadsden on January 01, 2008, 02:29:32 PM
Once again the water conditions were good but a East wind would have made getting a good drift difficult I thought.

For that reason I was a fair weather fisherman today. ??? I spend some time having coffee with friends, visited another and did a tour of the river. By the reports I got the fishing was slow and heard of only one taken, that was different from yesterday's reports.

I also saw a vehicle a Teskey Rock with a broken side window and also was told by my CO friend of another that he heard had been broken in around Tamihi today as well.

I was also told of another break-in above On the Way Store and one by the store as well as a vehicle stolen yesterday so keep your eyes open when in the area and leave nothing of value in your car.

It has got to the point I try to keep the Leaf Mobile in sight when I am fishing although it cuts down on places one can fish.

had a chat with a rcmp buddy of mine, he was on duty doing the chilliwack  lake road patrol this mornin and happened to pull up just as i was leavin wilson road. 4 vehicles from the crossing up had been broken into between first light and 8:30 a.m. ..... and in that same time.... i didn't get a sniff on the run i was fishin.
from wilson down to almost the train bridge is the area i covered today with a thorough cast n blast with bait and blades. Saw one fish taken between lickman and train bridge from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30.
water conditions were pretty perfect to gettin low in spots, and as Chris mentioned, the darn wind was howlin good today and only let up briefly around the noon hour. no fish for me today, BUT a fellow below me a couple rods down river from me landed a still shiny and near chrome wild buck coho about 10/11 lbs. I'm writing that one in my log as one of the latest cleanish cohos i've seen on the chilliwack.

Today I picked up a bunch of fishing tackle, ring box, tools, and a car registation that was left on the side of the road, I believe it was the remains of a car break in. I was going to drop it off at freds on the way by, but they were closed today. Ill try and drop it off there tomorrow.

No fish for me or anyone else I came across.

It might be better to take it to the RCMP.

I'd love to see a checkpoint set up at the Vedder X-ing randomly throughout the year (especially during high break-in times).  They 'd stop everyone and do some questioning and look for probable cause to search for stolen items.  Obviously, the vast majority of people would be sent on their merry way without any hassel.  However, if you have random break in items visible in your car, don't live up there and aren't fishing, you'll probably be questioned some more.  Even if the search thing is a little too aggressive, they could at least keep tabs on license plates and id's.  They do this in Washington state for DUI's.  Everyone gets pulled over at the checkpoint and questioned.  If they smell alcohol or show other signs, it's breathalizer time.

We had heavy rain overnight here in Chilliwack so not sure what conditions will be but temperature is 4 degrees now and river gauge at Vedder Crossing did not rise so maybe it will still be in.

We have a meeting with the City of Chilliwack later this, morning re the proposed dyke closures on the Vedder Canal so I will check conditions later in the day and report back.

fishonsteelheader and I fished the upper river , I got into one , looked to be in the teens , got it behind a big boulder in a few inches of water and sat there didn't want to move :P , then it did a rollover and the hook popped out  :'( .  fishonsteelheader down below me , same thing , spat the hook  ::) . Another smacked my hook an hour later , that was it , smacked . It was a good day anyway  ;D .                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Sorry to here about the break ins , my car was all alone up where we were but no troubles .

Chris has started a new thread on car break-ins on this page (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=16792.0) and I've moved one of the posts over there now, so this thread would not stray away from the topic.

Went up at first light today, stopped at the lower but it was so windy I didn't bother putting on the waders and drove to the upper. Conditions were near perfect, very little wind, good visibility and not too crowded .... the water had dropped at least a foot or more since I was there last week.  Really started to rain by 10:30 and by the time I drove back down at noon the water by Tamahi was coloring up quickly because of the clay banks.

Was hoping to land a hatchery to clean and show body parts to my grade 5 class...we've started our salmonid unit again and will be raising coho in our classroom incubator.  Did manage to land a wild one, tailed it, and took a quick photo.....

Just got back checking conditions and was surprised the river was still fishable, at the moment anyway. Rain and windy now so I will leave the fish for those out there braving the conditions, including The Master.
I even told him about one of "the hot spots" but" nothing yet" was his report.

Of course I am still riding high after yesterday's success so I can stay warm and dry today. ;D

Extremely windy in Chilliwack this morning.  It is going to make fishing conditions tough.  Me thinks a lot of guys will be blown off the river this morning.

Checked the river and it was a bit coloured but was good enought to catch a fish as The Master got a nice doe in the 13 to 14 pound range. It was still very windy in most places.
Rodney may post the pictures of the Master's fish here if he wishes, it certainly was a very beautiful specimen.

It was still OK at 3, just checked outside and it is broken overcast with temperature around 4.

Should be fine if the rain holds off but the clay slides are touchy so the river can go out at any time because a slump of clay can fall into the river proper.

Checked it near sunset and boy there was lots of anglers still at it. Ran into a few from the forum as well with one just finding some success. ;D ;D

Now, you weekend anglers leave the river to us retired guys so we can get some fish too.

No need to go out as we will keep you posted on all the steelhead we are catching. ;D ;D ;D

Title: Re: 2008 Vedder River conditions
Post by: chris gadsden on January 09, 2008, 05:46:31 PM
Conditions were good today except for a wind that made Terry and I head to Tims for coffee fairly early.

I headed out after that and the wind had died down and conditions remained good all day except for the lack of fish, that I saw anyway. I only saw one fish, that an angler broke off, heard of 3 others. The Master I believe was skunked too. :o

The highlights for the day for the day were missing a fish twice before I hooked it, on the third try. I got a brief thrill until I found I had hooked a 3 pound wild coho buck that had not spawned yet. Then I found two Drennans in a log jam including the Maple Leaf Drennan I lost yesterday when I broke a steelhead off. Glad I found it before Lucky or Fish Assassin as the latter would have ripped the logo off. :'( ;D I have taken the liberty of posting a little off topic as I donot have to write The Journal this evening as would be hard to write much of one due to the lack of action.

Rain in the forcast now may give us a few days off. :-\

Conditions were fishable this am but I did not get out of the Leaf Mobile as the snow had turned to rain. I just came back from the KWB area and the river appears to be going out, visibility there was still about 2 feet at 10am. With all the rain coming down things do not look good. I imagine we will hear an update later, from those that braved the elements.

Fished the upper from first light till 4 pm.
Water was up about a foot since Thursday but visibility was decent at about 3-4 feet.
Went for lunch at noon, visibility was 2 feet.
Came back from lunch, visibility was 6 inches.
Left at 4 pm, things were starting to clear up just a little.

Surprisingly, I had more action in the poorer water clarity. Short floating 3-4 feet of water just off
shore.  Ended the day with this hatch doe.  Looks like shes had quite the journey judging by the
scars on her. Quick photo and back on her way she went

Hooked one in mid river early morning and then landed one chrome hatchery doe ~9lbs around 2pm (Right after I spoke to Nicole), it was released which in hindsight was a poor decision. I need the roe. Pink worms took both fish. There seemed to be a FlyBC fish out just above the train bridge. I saw Jetboat Jim, Xgolfman, and Fishin'Bum and a few others I couldn't ID.

Conditions were good earlier this morning when I visited it, even though we had heavy rain last night. It is still raining. I saw one fish landed and shortly after while talking to The Master he was into a fish as well and he landed a nice bright hatchery doe. ;D ;D

We then went to Cookies for breakfast where Nick told me a fellow reported to him that the upper section of the river was on the way out so conditions below may now be out as well. I will try to give an update later in the day if I get out for a look.

I was not fishing due to the cold I am having trouble getting rid of. :'(

just got in the door from my 3rd day in a row. The river is indeed gettin murky up top. Slesse was starting to colour it up and below the prison she was picking up a bit more colour..... My last cast of the day this morning was at 9:25 a.m. I'll say... prison camp-ish area, hittin pockets with blades on a short leader. Hooked and lost 2, braking off 12# leaders in the fast water..... Last leader held as fish number 3 barely came to hand, a bar chrome 10 or so lbs hatchery doe. Thanx to Dennis from kamloops for helpin me out, never met the guy before, he is down for a few days fishin...... i told him about the forum here so maybe we will see a new member soon. Gonna take a day or two off from fishing to work a couple days  ;D , then it's back at it thurs /fri

Checked it at 4:30 and visibility was now about 10 inches in the Lower, I thought it would have been worse with all the rain we have been having here in Chilliwack today. We also have seen the wind pickup as well, making for a stormy evening, no wonder I saw no anglers in the area I checked out.

I fished the the Big V today! Started at lickman first light and saw 5 caught and one lost. A couple of big ones too. One was at least 15 lbs for sure. Nadda for me so to the upper for some exploring and was rewarded with an 7 lb hatch buck! My first vedder steel this season. Conditions were getting worse when I left around 2 pm. Chalk grey at the crossing and looked like zero vis and the same for Tamahi!

Arrived at the river about 10 and found conditions favorable and just in time to see The Master land his second of the day. ::)

I fished for 5 hours but my float would not dip the whole time. Other action I saw was a fish hit the beach when I was about 500 yards from him. I think it must be a hatchery but no, back in the water it goes, I heard later it was indeed a wild fish. :o ::)

On the way back to the truck around 3 o'clock another fish on, bonk, a few minutes later same run another on. Splash quickly to see if a wild for the tube as today was the first day of brood capture.

I get to the scene and yes a nice wild doe 12 to 13 pounds, tube flipped off back ready to tube. Another fellow willing to help, fish tired and near the shore but one more run, snap goes the leader with steelhead leaving the scene with a rubber worm in her mouth, hence no fish for the brood stock program.

Leave the river a bit disappointed and go out for the evening flight, better success there as 3 mallards come to hand out of 7 shots.

Tomorrow I hope for 3 more, steelhead that is. ;D

On arriving at the river after an early morning duck hunt ( when 6 mallards fell to 6 shots also ;D, sorry for boasting  ::))  I found excellent conditions once again, cool but no wind.

Anglers were spread throughout the runs I fished yesterday but after about 3 hours of fishing my cold seemed to be getting the best of me so I fled to the shelter of my abode. It was not like yesterday, in the runs I fished anyway as I did not see one fish on or landed. Although I heard some other areas, above and below me some fish were taken.

Time for a nap and maybe some better success fish wise tomorrow, I guess Cammer jinxed me today. ;D ;D ;D

Showed up to Allisons this afternoon around 1:30-2 o'clock, stepped out onto the riverbed to see one guy bringing in a nice looking wild.  Water clarity is beautiful btw.  Fished up and down the pool for a while, I don't have anything else to type about it...Nothing hit, no bites, zero, So I am thinking about changing presentation to something the fish maybe wont find so intimidating.  Went down Wilson Rd (i think) heard of 5 being caught, one guy said he caught one earlier in the day, so I think me and my buddy were the only ones not catching fish.  I'm sure later tonite this thread will fill up with people reporting what they caught.

Cheers,

Because my cold seemed worse today, most likely because I fished earlier in the week I just did a drive around, shortly before noon. Conditions of course were very good but most people I talked to said it was very slow today.

The trip was a success for me as I found a drennan float and a few recyclables. Also a nice visit with Tom and Dick. Did not see Harry though. ;D ;D ;D

Any word on conditions today. It's snowing at UBC with about half an inch on the ground. I'm a little reluctant to go out if there is lots of snow, my truck doesn't handle it so well.

Very little on the road in our area but not sure as how it is on the way here though. I have not been out yet, darn cold keeping me grounded but will do a drive out for a look only, soon. ::)

No snow in Port Moody area according to a buddy who lives there but lots in Surrey (freeway area)...all kinds of fender benders....had to make a few detours to get home.  Don't know about further out (200th to 264th)

Just returned for a look see and conditions of the river are still fine although I believe it has colored up a bit from yesterday. Only talked to one angler and he had nothing to report. There seemed to be less anglers around than during the week, in the area I visited anyway.

Rain and snow mixed at this time and roads are clear at the moment.

River looked good when I drove the Lower a hour ago, lots of anglers out looking like icicles. Would be hard to get a good drift I would wager.

You can see the wind coming from the shadow created on the water. My float would just sit still and do nothing.

And to make thing worst, I forgot my vest after driving one hour to the river. I had to go back home to grab the vest and got nothing to boot!!!!

What a waste of time and energy...better stay home and watch the game!!!

Conditions looked quite pleasant out there today, I was tempted to give it a try but got to shake this cold first. :(

Talked to Lew who was working his run but nothing to report other than a dolly he heard was caught earlier. The usual mid week crowd out.

Did my usual drive along the Vedder this afternoon, talked to a number of anglers and they all had the same answer, 0 caught, 0 seen and 0 heard of. ???

Usual drive out to the Vedder looking forlornly at the good looking water as one more day of rest needed but appears I have not missed much.

First ran into an angler who said he landed his biggest steelhead in 20 or 25 years of angling the other day over 20 pounds was his estimate.

Steelhead King arrived on the scene next armed with his spey rod, appeared to have lots of confidence in getting one, I am sure we will hear if he gets one. ;D

Next along comes Lew who reports nothing but found a nice drennan along the shoreline. We went and enjoyed a coffee together. I then continued my tour of the Lower river but saw nothing fish wise.

I got a nice photo of two eagles sitting right next to each other. Love Birds? ;D Maybe Spring is on the way, well Valentine's Day is only 3 weeks away today.

What a wonderful afternoon it was to be out there today as the temprature warmed up above freezing. I fished to nearly 5:30 but came up empty. The only fish I heard of was from two anglers who said they were into two earlier in the day. They were in the Lower when I talked to them but not sure if that is where they connected with their steelhead. The Lower seems to have slowed down asThe Master was into his third trip this week without a fish,. That was when I talked with him near noon.

It was good to get out after being off the river for over a week. Sounds like snow in the forcast for tomorrow so it really will be steelhead weather then. ;D ;D

Decided to leave the rod a home as I went out to check conditions for you. Would have liked to go out with the TV crew from Global covering the gravel story on Spring Bar but the boat was loaded with 10 people including the print media as well as the TV people and maybe not a good idea with my cold anyway. As I posted on another thread it should be on the 6 news this evening.

On my tour of the Lower I serviced the CVRCC garbage bags. Saw some broken glass at the Giesbrecht Road parking lot. In conjunction with this I was told by an angler some anglers caught two thieves and were turned into the RCMP. Good work guys. I was told, not sure if it was true but they were in an old white ex RCMP car. ??? ::)

During my drive I picked up some tins and bottles to help pay for the gas. ;D Conditions were perfect, a little warmer than the rest of the week.

Visited with a few anglers from the forum and only got one report from one that he had a fish on. Actually the steelhead hit as he was shaking the ice off his guides. :-[

Talking about ice the snow has just started falling here in Chilliwack.

When I got home I discovered I had dropped my Cell phone somewhere so I had to retrace my steps, luckily I found it. It was a little cool and was as pleased as I was to be retrieved.

Just another day alone the shores of The Vedder River.

Yes I guess it was, the only difference was that we had a little rain so the clay banks clouded the river up a bit, with the water being so clear it seems lower. The river is still crystal clear as of 2:00pm today and it came down another couple inches since yesterday.

I thought it was coloring up some from the snow melt around 4:30 when I looked at it below On The Way Store.

The winds this afternoon were terrible to fish in and my float was going upstream at times from the West wind. I was crazy being out in it. ::)

Wind has died down some now, no rain at the present and is 6 degrees.

When I left it was fishable in the Lower at dark and we have no rain at the present.

As I said earlier the conditions below the clay slides can change quickly with the mild weather and a sudden rain storm so it can be a tough call what it will be in 12 hours time.

Thats the best I can do for you hotrod, probably does not help you that much, sorry.

Water was clearing up a bit down low at around 5:30 when I left the river, it wasn't windy and no rain where I was. Forecast for tonight is 5-10 mm of rain which shouldnt be too bad. If you're still worried in the morning just check the hydro graph on this site : http://scitech.pyr.ec.gc.ca/waterweb/fullgraph.asp , any jumps in the water could mean that the river is really dirty. If ya decide to go out good luck, maybe I'll go tomorrow too!

The river remained fishable IMO throughout the day in the lower despite some rain and wind until around 4 pm when the conditions started to deteriorate (approx. 6 inch vis.). Not many people out there today, and didn't see any fish hooked or caught.

Yea was going to go at around 1 o'clock but saw the river was pretty green so decided not to fish, that and also was pissing down rain at the bridge when I got there so decided wasn't worth it..... took another pretty big jump on the graph and forecast is rain overnight (25-30 mm) and rainy and warm for the rest of the week (between 4-7 degrees every day). Hopefully conditions dont get too bad.

Today water visibility was about 3 feet at Peach Road. Conditions were miserable, probably some of the worst I've ever had. First were really strong winds so bad that I had my drennan float fly back at my head when I casted, then it shattered on a rock :(... thats the only problem with them. After that again, wind blew my gear back at me but this time got a huge backlash in my line. Then after about 30 mins of crazy winds came the torrential downpour of rain (still with the wind) for about a half hour and then it got somewhat sunny for the last half hour, and the winds dies down a little. Didn't see any fish hooked or any fish caught the 2 and a half hours I was out. Any 1 else have any luck?

I went out for the afternoon and the water vis was near zero at ways field around 4 pm. I saw a guy hook one behind me today that was at least 18 lbs of wild buck. I offered to help the older gent as this big bad boy tired him out after 20 mins of fighting. I had the honor of tailing and releasing this beautiful monster for the old guy. He had a grin on from ear to ear and his hands were shaking from the rush. Good for him!

A story with a happy ending ;D!!Good on you Hot Rod for helping out the old timer! After hooking your fish it can be quit difficult trying to safely tail any fish by yourself never mind an 18lb monster!Coming from a guy who fishes alone alot I find the hardest part is putting my hands on the fish >:(.

Conditions were nice in the morning but a little while ago the Lower had coloured up with visibility around a foot. I guess some clay fell in and we had some rain today as well. Where was the sun they said we were to get today?

From the reports I got it was slow today but maybe that was just in the area I was in. Talked to two chaps and one had landed 2 hatchery that he released.

Also apparently another fellow hooked one and handed the rod to his partner who when he got it to the shore he pulled it onto the rocks, then a photo shoot took place before they returned the wild to the water.  ??? ::) Of course this is a no no under any circumstances.

I was told another angler paid them a visit and they got angry when they were reminded this is not the way to handle a fish when you are not retaining it. I guess they did not know any better, good on the angler that brought it to their attention.

Hope the rain holds off tonight and the river clears up for those that wish to fish tomorrow.

Conditions are presently quite clear but we have been able to pick up a few fish this week, we have found first light to be the best maybe because we have had some fairly sunny days.

Fish seemed to be in certain parts of the river one day and gone the next including the Canal area which has the no vacancy sign up at the key spots. ;D This fine for me as it leaves places I like to fish mostly devoid of anglers. ;D ;D

If you do not find fish in a certain area I would recommend moving around a bit, I am sure you will find a fish or two, enjoy the weekend.
Title: Re: 2008 Vedder River conditions
Post by: chris gadsden on February 23, 2008, 09:51:10 AM
Counted a good 50 people working some of the canal area. Saw 2 fish hooked as I drove along the dyke, one appeared to be foul hooked by the way it was fighting before the hook pulled out.

Found a key chain with some clippers etc. on it so put it by the driver's side of the closest car hoping it was his.

I was disturbed to see so much garbage along this stretch of the canal. Lots of cups etc. that I know some anglers are carelessly just throwing out. :'( I can see in the near future it will be hard to keep this area open and it will go to the way of the Abbotsford side. At this time the area will be closed for driving from May 15 to July 15.

We were lucky at the meeting some of us had with the City of Chilliwack that we were able to keep it open for now, for the rest of the year.

To keep on topic, water condition although low are in top shape.

Talked to 8 other ppl and no one saw or hooked any so hopefully more fish move into that area, lately, until now it has been a very good spot, but like every 1 is saying, you can catch like 5 fish one spot a day earlier and the next day there is nothing there.....

The splashing got my attention and they weren't very far apart (Maybe they were jumping since the water was only like around a foot deep trying to get up). there must have been two there traveling together. Conditions were great at 3:30 and only got clearer/better towards the end of the day when we left at 6:20ish. Any 1 else beside britguy hook anything?

waters almost to clear again... Did my marathon river walk yesterday. Parked across from the paintball field, and ended my day at lickman. I always look forward to the wader walk back ( hour & ten mine);) but i guess it wasn't to bad since I got my hand around 2 square tails.  ;D

Thats a long ways to walk, same distance as the day I caught my fish as I walked..... only difference is all I had to do was phone my dad and tell him I had a fish and he came to pick me up ^^. Must have been a great day. Were both the fish wild or hatch? (Guessing wild)

Conditions were great today when I had a look this morning after the overnight rain but there were anglers everywhere, in the Lower anyway.

A number of campers setup as well and when I stopped to talk to one group to make sure they make a concentrated effort to clean up any garbarge that could result of the camps I found out it was a River Rats weekend derby, I believe I got the name correct. I told them about the CVRCC Adopt a River program we have on the Chilliwack Vedder River as we try to keep it as clean as we can but of course that can be challenge at times.

They assured me they would and said they had done a cleanup before they setup. Good show fellows. ;D ;D

Water is way dpwn again and super clear. Walked from the Vedder Crossing Bridge all the way to Wilson Road on the back side of the river and crossed by Wilson to get back to the proper side. Talked to quite a few other people out there and no one had anything to report including me. Any one have any luck today?

Lost a 8-10lb doe up top, and a couple of hits but that's it, when it's low go for big pockets and pools it's the only hiding spot for the shy little buggers.

Yes the big pockets and pools are a good spot to hide but you dont need to look there to find fish either.  Friday I walked into a shallow choppy run of about 2 feet deep and third cast fish on, after a good headshake it was gone... If you come across a piece of water that is not flowing to fast, and has some chop/ ripple to it, it will hold a fish at times, even if It looks to low throw a cast in.

I think I might go take a walk down to the river and fish a few hours right now.... water gauge for river showing a small jump which might add some color... maybe I can find a fish where I caught my last one ^^.

I would assume river is ok, dropped on graph and was fishable on Monday so it should be fishable tomorrow unless we gets lots of rain overnight.... here's a site to check in the morning see if the river has jumped over .10 metres nomrally it starts colouring up after that.

I appreciate them as well Chris.  It's a fair drive from Surrey/Gguildford out to there and by the time you add collecting gear, car loading, driving both ways, and clean-up it's a big chunk out of a day if the water's not fishable.  You've saved me Many, Many hours over the years!

Conditions still excellent today, not many anglers out when I was out checking things out.

When I stopped at Lickman parking lot around 10 there was not an angler in sight. Lack of fish keeping anglers away or maybe it is the soaring gas prices.

Title: Re: 2008 Vedder River conditions
Post by: Every Day on April 11, 2008, 07:26:02 PM
Tomorrow may not be that great because the temp is suppose to be really high, the only chance you'll have is by getting into a deeper hole with lots of cover and make sure your offering is really small, I hit one today on a little trout spoon. Sunday however should be a very good day if the temp hits 21 tomorrow. This should trigger some snow melt giving the river a galcier colour and maybe some clay from the banks up higher, also we are suppose to have some rain on Sunday and it should be warm too, enough that snow melt will continue.

Good luck to every one going out on the weekend, hope you have fun!

River jumped a few inches last night due to the 27 degrees it reached here in the Valley yesterday, should make for good fishing. Saw lots of fry this morning excited about the rising waters and the pinks along with chum will be heading to the ocean.

The Fraser River was on the rise as well and was coloring up, the freshet has finally started.

Today was not too bad.... River came up about 6 inches while I was there and was getting increasingly cloudy..
Day started off with clear water and by the end 2 feet visibility was about all that was left.
The fish seemed to be moving as I got 3 good hits, but the hits were so short the reaction time had to be dead on, I only actually hooked into one and that was for a very breif time. Tried going through with a different bait right after the bite, but didnt get anything else after the first hit. Hopefully the last two days will turn to be good, that is if it stops pouring rain in Chilliwack, hopefully the river stays about this height with 2-5 feet visibility and the fishing should be good (fingers crossed)

Me thinks that the fly fishing may be good next week with the higher water probably bringing new fish up and the fact that there will be no fishing pressure should mean the fresh ones will hit anything presented. Good luck to everyone trying their luck the next 2 days!

Dan

What a moron..... the river is soo high and dangerous right now.... you could harldey see a foot deep on Thursday, I can't imagine what it would be like now...

HE IS ALONE,
he can't see anything under the water ahead of him that might catch his tube,
I have seen trees pop up randomly when the river gets high and turbulent by bouncing off the bottom, etc

Imagine a tree coming up from under you and flipping you in the water.... NO ONE ELSE TRY THIS, atleast until Jul/Aug anyways (when we do it, don't forget to say hi) And if you are going to tube the Vedder make sure you scout out your route before you go, 2 years back we hit a log jam in fast water, and believe me, it's not very fun living with a grade 4 concussion.

He can't wear a lifejacket because from my experience it is more dangerous than without one if he gets caught in a sweep, and there are lots of them when the river is this high.
