Title: Fishing shrimp for steelies
Post by: kellya on December 28, 2007, 11:33:55 AM
Quick question for steelheaders. I used cooked shrimp from a friend the last few days and did well. I was wondering if raw shrimp is better or even prawns? I have access to lots and i would think raw would stay on better. thanks

I haven't bait fished in years, but when I did I found that the hand peeled shrimp worked much better than the Machine peeled. Also found that the raw worked better but the raw do come off the hook faster than the cooked as they are softer.

I Highly recommend that you use raw hand peeled shrimp over the machine peeled or cooked ones.

i use shrimp or prawns but i don't cook them i use them raw, cover them in pickling salt aka coarse salt which will dry them out and toughening them up abit so they will last alot longer also you can dye them to give them alittle more colour. I hope this helps you.

I've used both cooked and uncooked shrimps and haven't really noticed any difference.

I just pro cure raw shrimp or prawn tails. Have taken my share of steelhead with them.

The good part is they last on the hook very well. ;D

I do the same as chris. If you dry them out long enough and put a decent amount of salt on them they will last long periods of time!...And the fish love em!

Stain em up (raw prawns) in pro cure and then roll'em in pickling or sea salt and you are set, the salt really increases their durability.

Inject them aswell, take some shrimp scent and take a needle and scent them up, they only take scent well when not cooked though

Depends on the amount of shrimps and the colour you want. I usually just leave it for 10-15 minutes.

Ok i went out and bought about 50 shrimp for 4 bucks tonight. They are the grey type. I put them in a ziplock with a bit of water and added fire cure generously. They dont seem to be taking the color well after 30 min. I did them in batches of 10. Some i left natural, some i just added salt, some just pro cure and some water/procure. Im pretty much experimenting. How long should they be in for and after they are cured should i put them in salt? If so just salt by itself? or mixed with water? Thanks if anyone can help

I just use Pro Cure (no brine or salt)

you don't need to use any water when you use pro cure. put your roe or shrimp in a bag or bowl sprinkle on the pro cure and mix a little.when you have the even color you want take your bait out and let it drain for a little (pro cure tends to make roe real juicy) then i will put the roe in some borax and put it in the fridge.

i have never used anyting but salt to cure shrimp or prawns i don't know how much of a difference the color makes? anyone else have any thoughts? ???

Grey shrimps are raw , they turn red when cooked.

Grey shrimps? I think they were just old prawns when you refreeze or they sit for a while the color changes alot. I prawn and shrimp alot in the summer and a fresh prawns meat isnt grey more of a white/clear with orange. Steelies didnt mind the ugly orange grey puke colored prawns today. Got some fresh prawns tho and just skinned them and tossed them in a bag with lotsa cure like a few suggested and they turned out nicely. I left half naturalas well.

He means the colour of the shell, not the meat.

Thread it through the middle from head to tail. Thread can be used to secure it if you find it falling off too often.
