what type of "season does prawning have in the local chuck?
All year but once commercial season starts numbers drop significantly.
can you prawn in Indian Arm all year?
Sure.
If not when is best? Any sweet spots?
Winter is best- spots well you never know how tides/currents have moved the little buggers up/down the inlet sometimes it's the head that's hot sometimes the corner sometimes in between.
And how long do you leave the traps down typically?
Across a tide change-weighted down good-10# minimum.
cheers V

If you are willing to do a bit of travel, We have prawn fished for years between Pender and Mayne Islands. We get tons every time we go, but you will need to find the dropoff.
It is located about 800 yards in from the west side of the Islands, and about 500 yards from the Pender Island side. It drops sharply from 110 feet down to 400 feet.
We drop the traps at the 400 foot mark and leave them for about 12 hours and almost always overnight.

In the summer we would drop the prawn traps up indian arm in about 350-400ft of water. we tied various spots and had some good success. Up near the hydro dam was decent

dont skimp on bait specially for long soaks. I used catfood and it was ok maybe 30 per trap and switched to packing it with salmon pieces, plus catfood and started getting 100 per trap.

do the traps sit on the ground or do the float?? ???
-
Just like crab traps they sit on the bottom.
-
thank you

Oh yea make sure you put a small maybe 0.5-1lb weight 50feet down from the float so your excess rope doesnt float. I cant count how many times ive seen 200feet of rope floating on the surface and a few times ive hit it weaving through prawn traps near the marina.

is the indian arm a good place to go ???

There can also be good prawning between Horseshoe Bay and sunset.
