Stick to the valley's flows for now guys. fished the squamish near mamquam confluence today from 11am to 2pm. I was surprised to see only around 7 fishermen in sight. I fished with the chum killer wool combo i had success with here last year, then chucked a little blades and spinners, i caught nothing but cold. The water clarity was poor, no fish to show for. Best action was, a big seal was surfacing 10 fts away from me :o good thing i didn't foul hook this beast. :P It was windy and chilly there.. as usual, and bumped into a very nice fellow fisherman, chatted for a while and found out he was also a member of FWR.. nice meeting you Nick (Capman) ! Hopefully we would fish together again next time ;)
Still early. Bulk of fish haven't shown up yet, at least another week i guess..
-
same report i got from a few buddies today who live in pemberton and squamish.... one more week and things should be getting good.... as long as the monsoons die down.
-
The commercial chum catches from johnstone strait have been very poor, so maybe the chum runs to the rivers are going to be poor. The clarity of the river will be bad after all this rain so maybe by next week the river will be clearer and hopefully some fish will show.
-
I hit the Squamish Sunday. There was around 8 fishermen there. I did'nt catch anything. One person did though, he had about a 10 foot leader below his float fishing in around 2-3 feet of water. I'm assuming he was flossing. While I was there he caught(flossed) and kept a chrome chum and released a wild coho.
-
yep, that's pretty much the situation up here. Those "fishermen" who catch chum seem to floss... not everyone though. I have fished the Cheakamus and have seen a couple of guys catching chromer chum with float & wool (or gooeys). I have not seen anyone catching them on the fly yet.
This year seems totally different from last year. Same time last year I was catching chum left and right. There were also more coho - that's my impression. It has been raining pretty good up here and the rivers have come up again by a few feet.

i got them on the fly with an 18 inch leader right in the snout. i think we were in the right place at the right time to run into some schools of fresh fish and water clarity was perfect. last few days you could tell the fish had been holding as they were a little more colored. finished the day at a run where i saw some fresh fish moving but the water clarity was poor (12-15 inches). hope after my next shift the conditions have gotten better........

I haven't been up to the Squamish yet, but I either the bulk of the Chum run in most rivers is late or not coming. I am sincerely hoping they are just late. If the Chum suffer everything else in the food chain suffers.
-
I wouldnt worry to much yet theres tons of chum still up north. I think their still comin
-
for what its worth, i heard through the grape vine that this is expected to be one of the bigger chum runs in the last ten or fifteen years.
-
Didn't DFO predicted 19 million pinks ? ;)
-
Be careful how you interpret statistics. We got 10 million pinks. I think that corresponded to the 90% probability level of the estimate. 19 million Pinks was the 50% probability level. You can probably also say 30 million Pinks at the 10% probability level. ALL THE SAME ESTIMATE.
The estimated number of Pink fry going to sea was 615 million. The differences in the estimates and returns are a very small percentage of the initial population. A tough target for the estimators.

There sure seems to be alot of chum in the Allouette right now. I have been walking the dog there alot in the last couple of weeks and the numbers seem to be there. I guess the smell with come soon :P

nice fish, what did you get it on?
-
i was shocked today to find the clarity quite good for the morning while i was there. left as the downpour began as this fish was my only bujmp all morning. with all the rain im sure its blown out now. i was sure i was going to get a clouded river before i left this morning . got this one on a black/purple prawn.
-
I see my Indian rock on the other side there! Nice fish dude! Your one of the lucky few!

ya this is one of the better spots on the flow with a slower current for sure. there is a research company now doing fish tagging in this area which sucks for fishing but good for the fish.....they will be at this spot during the week for the next two months the guy said. cool to see them net some fish. they are getting alot of coho out of this run as well. they are doing research on chum numbers and how the cheakamus dam water usage is affecting the numbers of fish coming up. met some guys from tenderfoot hatchery that showed me an unbelievable spot on the river where i will not be dealing with crowds this year. cant wait until my next set of days off to go give it a try......
hope to hear some reports from the weekend that the river is filling up....i think i was lucky getting this one today..not even many showing here as compared to afew days ago
-
It's a good hike but worth it none the less.

i think this year might be the bad chum year, because i remember one year has a way smaller run than usual, but it is too early to say anything yet though, at least there are tonnes of coho
-
can anyone tell me what the river looks like today ???
-
We fished all three today Squamish, Cheakamus and Cheakeye.
First off, I can't believe how much the braided section of the Cheakamus has changed...there have been some serious land slides up there, and now a lot of what I used to fish is now vertical drop offs of 40 feet!
Found some nice water, but only a few fish. Then moved up to the Cheakeye bridge..watched a great show of FN chum snagging, although they seemed to be catching more branches than anything else.
After trying wool to no avail, in the chum hole, which was deeper than I remember it, there were several dark chum, and a nice mix of silver chum and coho showing. Switched to blades with no float, pulling fast through the deep water. Two casts in with a number 3 Mepps black, and bang - fish on. JUST a little to colored a chum for my liking, but boy did it nail that Mepps. So back in it went..and again, fish on..this one ran down river, and I was $4.99 worth of Mepps lighter.
As I was re-tying, I noticed that my tacklebox was floating. Odd. Then I realised I was in knee deep water. Then I realized I was in waist deep water. So I bolted for shore (even though I had been standing on shore. I asked my buddy Pete, and he agreed...we weren't imagining things..the river came up fast! As quickly as fishing had gotten good, it was a blow out. So we lunched at the Raindog only to learn that that river is dam controlled. Learn something new every day.
Would have been nice to catch a clean one, but two aggressive hits and played fish is still great fun. Plus, lots of eagles, GBH's and laughs.
Finished the day at the Squamish/Mamquam, and not a single fish to be seen. NOT ONE. Even the numerous seals seemed confused.
-
Squamish had 6' of vis when I left! No fish anywhere! The odd one finning but not enough to catch any. Very poor indeed. I would never have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself!

water levels are lower than I had expected. Fished the spot in the pic.... did not catch any myself. Tried wool and lures under float. Also lures without float. Had one bite but got off. Saw quite a few fish in that area - mostly coho. Not many chum.

We fished all three today Squamish, Cheakamus and Cheakeye.
I hope that you did not fish the Cheekeye as it is permanently closed and has been for years.
