Title: Noob fly fishing question!
Post by: Ed on August 27, 2007, 01:21:04 PM
Hi i was just wondering what the main differences are between a 9'0  and 9'6 fast action rod? I heard something about a 9'6 having a little more power than a 9'0 but i wanted to confirm with you pros.

The main difference is the length of the rod. Duhhhhhh

Other than that, if they are made by the same company and have the same action rating they probably cast pretty similar. The extra length will however give you a little extra distance, better mending capability, but it will be slightly heavier.

You don't always get more distance. 2 fast action rods like the Sage Z-axis 690 and 696, the extra 6in actually softens the rod a bit. same with the winston bIIx i was casting. It does give a little more reach with regards to line control while mending and such and can give a soft to medium action caster more distance. But for myself, when looking at fast rod, the extra 6in softens them too much for me. I like the crisp feel all the way through, and when shooting into the wind or hauling a hard line to get that almost out of reach rise, i don't want that softer tip. So for me the shorter rod keeps the feel I like.

Just my opinion, it's all about personal preference. One is not better than the other, just different.
