The stats are interesting because they show that the sockeye return is improving of late and are not as abysmal as DFO has been reporting previously. The latest assessment from DFO also concurs with this statement (see FN O607- http://www-ops2.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/xnet/content/fns/index.cfm?pg=view_notice&lang=en&DOC_ID=103614&ID=recreational). Not that I'm predicting a sockeye opening this year. I think that is gone. >:( I am very encouraged that coupled with a higher return, high water levels and low water temperatures, the sockeye run 4 years from now will be OK.
The stats are also interesting because they show a fairly good chinook return this year. Again, I am hoping that this means a very healthy return in 4 years.
With the improved test fishery, I am hoping that DFO will re-open the Fraser River freshwater fishery for pinks and chinook, starting Labour Day week-end. The bulk of the sockeye run will have passed by then. This would be HUGE for the recreational fishery industry who are taking the hit for the current closure.

The Albion test fishery uses larger meshed nets to avoid catching many of sockeye. The increase in sockeye numbers are probably some of the larger Adams fish comming in.

Good to see the sockeye run increasing. No reason to open the fishery. Let it remain close. Hopefully there will be a bumper crop in 4 years.
