I have recently read something that makes me wonder why we don't implement this strategy to eliminate or at least control 'undesirable species' here in BC or Canada for that matter :
Current Initiative : Catching NPM for profit
1 - 100 Northern Pikeminnow > than 9" = $4US each
101 - 400 NPM = $5US each
400+ - $8US each
NO LIMITS
Last years top angler raked in a cool $48000US in 5 months. Not bad :P. We all know what problems we have here with certain fish and here is the solution !!!!!!Whaddya think ? They also have other separate things going on where they will pay you just to go out for the day and give ya 200 -300US to catch pikeminnows or other problematic fish for the day.
Do you think this is a proper approach to curbing these pop's of fish ?
thoughts ?

Its an interesting idea, but I wonder how much by catch there was from the person who made $48,000. I would bet there is quite a bit (Probably released, but you get where I am going with this)
Second, I bet it would make for some pretty heated debated on FWR about how long a leader is acceptable ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, I don't know if that guy was gill netting. I doubt it. The report comes form a good source kind of like some of the more involved folks at FWR. The moderaters of the newsletter are actively involved in all kinds of conservation efforts state wide. One can only assume that he/she caught other species but hopefully they were not too put out by the anglers efforts. I believe that they have a huge problem with the pike minnows in some areas. Here they cause minimal impact to our stocks because they ( our stocks) are quite plentiful by world standards but down there they don't have much to build on so a infestation of NPM's can devastate a fishery quite quickly. If we don't do something soon about our little ( big :-[) buddies from the south we will suffer in similar circumstances I imagine.

I put this idea to FOCthis year but they would not go for it but someone else could try, go for it coryandtrevor ;D ;D and let us know how you make out. ;D ;D ;D A good starting point would be the Cultus Lake Lab. as they deal with this problem in Cultus Lake.

Has to be hook and line, friend of mine made a few thousand last year. He and his wife are retired, they also caught one of the tagged bonus fish. ;D
