As noted on CKNW last night, the Commercial and F/N are proposing moving all their fishing to a new area of the Fraser.
This is due to the Cultas Sockeye.
The proposal is to move all the fishery presently taking place from the Fraser River mouth to the Vedder and moving it all above the Vedder.
So they would be adding all the nets of these groups to the ones already above the Vedder.
You thought it was crowded up there before.
So, what do you think??

Not realistic at all, but at least the Cultus lake fish would be safe...
Maybe anglers would learn to fish plugs or something, I bet the fishing below the nets would be fantastic... I'm sure the Cheam backs this idea as they have problems drift netting through flossers during the sock run, and certainly not the bands with fishing rights downstream... Mind you, they'd still net on their territory regardless.
The losers will be the commercial boats, as they'll need to buy access to the fishing grounds claimed by natives... And the big losers will be the sporties, as all of their traditional fishing areas will be awash with nets.
The next question I have to ask and it's not pretty, are the cultus fish really worth saving?
Summer steelhead will still be pounded by nets, and would it not be worse of a gauntlet for the poor fish above?... The fraser is much narrower up there, and I can't see how a single fish would get by.

One hates to see a unique run of fish lost, but looking at the big picture is very important too. Good point on the more narrow river further up. There's a reason I look for a narrow section of river when setting up to fish!!
Boy, Sport angling is taking it from all sides and from within too. But the ones really feeling the heat will be our poor fish stocks!

Just because they use 7 inch mesh they think that summers dont get caught.
I wonder why the #'s in the coq and silver are so low?............Brain fart-----oh could it be that the steelies acually get caught in nets!
Besides, the user group with the least impact is always on the bottom of the proirity list.

Not only Steelhead but Thompson Coho which aren't exactly a healthy population.

The next question I have to ask and it's not pretty, are the cultus fish really worth saving?
The F/N thinks so that is why they had them moved to endangered.
The real answer is due to MAN the run is probably not going to ever come back.

By the way they are also proposing to go into other rivers to target their stocks.
Example would be the Harrison.
This is going to be really bad for anglers.The river will be covered with nets and boats.
Think about this, if it works for these groups the next step could be targeting runs of chinook in the Fraser or tribs.
( Think about them netting the Vedder mouth for chinook)
I would advise that you keep your eye on this as it WILL effect your fishing.
