Has anyone caught any thing from the float near the boat rental . I just want to practice my fly casting with hopes of catching something . I have a problem with my casting ,I am getting the fly out there but on 75% of my casts the fly disapears ,gone , vanishes ,and I don"t know where it goes . What am I doing wrong ? I have yet to catch a fish on my fly rod and I have had my rod for several years .I have gone threw a lot of flies .

when u are casting, when the line changes dirrection, you are "snaping" the line like a bull whip, wich makes the fly snapp off.

I have been using a 5x tippit . I will try a 10x to see if it still happens . Thanks for all the help and maybe I will catch my first trout on a fly rod .

dont use 10 pound tippet unless u are fishing for salmon or steelhead ...
5x tippet is fine for trout... probably has more to do with the casting or knot.
taking a few lessons will help in you alot

- Find a grassy field and try casting with just a piece of wool attached - much cheaper
- Once you stop hitting the ground on your back cast try casting from boat (the splash behind you will be a dead giveaway if you're hitting water)
- catch fish from boat.
- Try from shore.

You mean those aren't fish jumping behind me?? :o ;D
Oddjob, come out to Fish for the Future (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fftf/) as there will be several very experienced flyfishermen who will be offering flycasting tips throughout the day.
Some might even call it, boot camp. ;)

Chucklenow, but I know a certain someone (that thankfully doesn't read this forum) that thought that fish kept jumping behind her when we were trying to work on her casting "technique" ;)

Man somehow this thread went completely off topic in reference to the thread title...

Stocked rainbows (as long as they last) and large carp for the most part
