My friend and I went fishing at Whonnock lake from 1 till 6 today with quite a bit of success. It started of slow but then picked up not too much later due to a small chironomid hatch. There were numerous rises/boils throughout the day. My friend ended up with 5 bows landed and one lost. I landed 2 bows and 3 crappies with 1 bow and 2 crappies lost. Most of my fish were caught on black docs and black nymphs being trolled with a float line. (the lake is VERY shallow throughout most.) There were two boats out on the lake with little success ;) :P(or what seemed to be). Whonnock lake is a good lake to fish this time of year since it warms up fast because it is shallow.
Average size of bows caught = 11-13 inches Average size of crappies caught= 6-8 inches

that looks like a yellow perch that your holding up..
-
nope...I tried to get my friend to take a close up of it in my hands but it slipped away (otherwise I would of put it up). I'm 100% sure its a crappie. ;D

Lots of crappie in Whonnock. Can be quite fun on the 3wt.
-
I wanna check out whonnok soon, anybody up for that?
-
Look for the lilly pads just below the surface and fish there for crappies
they will take almost any fly
i got one about 14inch last year :o
-
that is a good size crappie!! my biggest from whonnuck is just over 11 inches
-
my biggest was 8inches that day 8) ..lol

what are some good flies for crappie?

what are some good flies for crappie?
I would say its more about color. Get something bright like yellow infront of their face and they usualy cant resist. They are not a picky fish. If you locate them you will catch them. Another good place to fish for them is Sturgeon Slough. I have fished for an hour before and caught over 20 in that span. Just not good when the water is up. I was there 2 weeks ago and the water was way up and there was no clarity.

u can pretty much catch a crappie on any fly. like bronswyk said...as long as the fish see it they will take it.

Light green with a little flash is the killer. I use to use an emerald green shrimp pattern and get a fish per cast. Now i use flourescent green jigheads with light green bodies and jig for them. A little more productive.
-
I use small red with a bit of flash ;D
-
where is sturgeon slough?
-
yeah, i was asking myself that too
-
I used to fish sturgeon slough lots a few years ago. If im not mistaken its in ridge meadows. I know its by a golf course, Cant remember the name though. :D
