Title: Davis Lake - April 15th
Post by: coryandtrevor on April 17, 2007, 02:14:14 PM
Nice day to be out on Davis, a friend and I caught a few 13"'ers not many risers and the water was dead calm most of the day. Tons of ATV dudes up there and it was noisy some of the time. Alot of garbage all over ( and i mean GROSS amounts of garbage, mattresses, toys and tires ). It was much cleaner than the Salisbury area ( which doesn't say much ) which is near the Davis area. Why is the Mission area so filled with garbage and shotgun shells ? Too many yahoos i guess..... All in all a good day to be out trouting. One strange thing is I noticed that the Rainbow Trout there were strikingly different looking than all other rainbow trout I have caught in the LM. They all had elongated heads/faces. Its not the first time I caught these trout there and the others looked the same. The heads were quite long in comparison to the bodies and the eyes were almost oval shaped and not round. I am 100% sure these were rainbows and I was wondering if anyone knows what strain these could be or if its just a natural occurrence based on genetic traits. 8)

are you sure ? They had no red stripe at all and had all the markings of rainbow trout. Maybe what minnie said cutt-bows ? Do all cutties have the stripe ?

Cutthroat have lots of spots

spots are not the best way to tell if a fish is a cutt/different strains of rainbows can also be spotty.
look for red slashes under the throat.
mouth extend past the eye.

not all cutties have a really visible red slash. some cutts slashes are so faint, you can't even see them.

So "look for red slashes under the throat", do all cutties have the slash as a rule ? The fish we caught had no slashes. Not even a faint trace, I looked long and hard. Nice looking fish anyway  :)

Thanks for the input guys

you probably caught cutties, snakeroll is correct the cutts that i have caught there were tinged yellow/golden and they do have the "slash" it's just that they are very faint in this lake and are quite often not visible unless the gills flare then you can see the 'slash' in the creases under the gill plate. how was the hike in? now that the road has been seriously decommissioned!largest fish  i've caught outta davis aws a solid 5lber that i released to make more fry. it turns my stomach to see how much garbage is up in that neck of the woods, a lot of it is grow op refuse, why can't they just go to a transfer station? what flies were you using? :)

Yeah, they looked alot different from the normal rainbows thats for sure. The species report doesn't show rainbow in there anyway. Hike down was a little muddy, not too bad. Not flyfishing , used Kroc's and spinners.  8)

Ive lived here in Mission now for 14 years ,and have explored that area a lot.It seems people think that once out their door anything goes, this area has degraded badly ever since access on the internet has exposed it ???.Between Davis lake area, and Berma rd on Stave lake, have been stolen vehicle dumping grounds for years now,its not an uncommon site to see burnt vehicles there almost on a daily basis(ICBC i believe has a recovery program now that gets the junk out pretty quick) I started fishing Big Silver 11 years ago,and on any given sunday you were lucky to see 6 other vehicles. Now its a bloomin 4 lane hwy,and with that comes the a_____s and their garbage. The perfect example of that is Lester(i think thats his name) leaves his trailert at Big Silver for a couple of hours, comes back and the thing is burnt to the ground ??? .Took my son many years ago up Terropoki creek as a walk in,an area where no 1 fished, had a plane fly over the trees about 200 feet following the creek, next time i went in, there were dew worm containers, pop cans, and general garbage laying everywhere :'( :'( >:( Where has the COMMON SENSE in people gone. These resourses are only going to take care of us, if WE TAKE CARE OF THEM ;D ;D

F*****G slobs, I've gotten to the point on occasion, if I see someone dumping garbage or leaving it laying around, I will pick it up, and dump it on, or in their vehicle ,or in their campsite. Maybe some vigilante justice is what a few of these jerks need, not that I would ever advocate that action, but if a few more people spoke up to the individuals who we see leaving their garbage behind, maybe the slobs, and lazy SOB's wouldn't be so apt to leaving their crap laying around!!! ******************************************  ACCOUNTABILITY is a word a few individuals need to familiarize themselves with *********************

HEY bcguy,I 2nd you on that one 100%.On a lighter note, the creek from Davis lake is what got me HOOKED ON FISHING.A friend took me into a couple of holes on the creek to fish, and landed at that time i think was a 16 inch cuttie (that was 11 years ago,so fish grow with time LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!)That area has treated me well,so its tough to see what these MASTER____TERS do with their garbage, and how they treat the enviroment, and MOST OF ALL DISRESPECT THEM SELVES AND OTHERS >:( :( :'(

I've lived in mission for 23 years now haven't been up to davis or salisbury for at least 10 years. Let's put it his way the last time I was there we used to drive honda civics down there. Everybody is willing to pack all the crap down there so they can go party but are too lazy and hung over to pack it back.I'm sorry ,but the distrist needs to reopen that road. We can whine and complain about the mess all we want, but unless we the whiners clean it up and pack it ourselves nothing is getting out of there till that road gets reopened. Can 4x4 get down? Obviously dirtbikes etc. can.

what are the physical features of a cuttbow? (do all cuttbows look the same)? Are they better fighters than a rainbow and cutthroat?

I was thinking of trying my hand fishing this lake. After reading this thread I'm not so sure now.  I guess even if the shore is treated like a dump the water will be ok, extra nutrition for the fish?  Not too sure about the peace and tranquility of quads and dirtbikes circling me all day though.
I'll probably leave this lake to the necks and look elsewhere...

Thanks for the report.

Long been a place for rednecks and party crowd. At one time though the lake had more pike minnow than anything else so it has improved. ;)
