Title: Best dock for herring?
Post by: gheart008 on April 16, 2007, 02:28:48 PM
Now that Cates is closed for fishing off the docks (starting this weekend) and ambleside still in shambles, what other docks are good for catching herring and smelts?

Looking for something closer to central GVR.

Thanks

Try the local beaches for smelts.

yah it has to warm up for smelts.....

you could still fish beside the dock though for herring and cast out as far as possible

Yes it is. I was answering the question on where he could catch smelts.

FA is the herring close to dock now?  Or still out in the open?

try the dock near the jerrico hostal , I used to catch flownders and dog fish . The bottom is very sandy and the dog fish are quite large . When the smelts are running , the fishermen are throwing their nets off the dock.   PS there are crabs there to .

Problem there is too many people crabbing off the dock. Lines everywhere.

Ya Jericho as someone else mentioned is too busy.  I'd expect balacarra to have them since it's the same waters as Cates.

Regarding the comment about casting far from the mini dock, I'm assuming you're talking about Ambleside since I've done that before with crab traps and was successful in getting two legal size ones, but I don't think casting out a herring jig would work that well.

Anyone gone out to Cresent in Surrey?  Last time I was there (didn't have my fishing gear), I think I saw spools of fish around the docks, not sure what they were though.
