I've just watched the latest videos [thanks Rodney] and the Steelhead one reminded me of a question I really must ask.
I'm not singling out our esteemed webmaster, as I'm beginning to see this more and more, but in the video clip Rodney is playing the fish with one hand on the lower corks and the other on the blank above the upper corks. ::)
Why is this becoming so prevalent? ???
If it becomes or is the norm, or is even necessary, why not put some more corks further up the blank? ???
Or why does anyone need to do this? ???

Colin's talking about the videos on this page:

How do you all like the new large screen and flash video setup? :D Feedbacks please. Feedbacks, feedbacks, feedbacks, so there can be improvements. ;) The first couple minutes in the second part are unfortunately blurry because whenever there is a busy background such as a dense forest, the foreground action gets blurry, unless we apply manual focus, which I could not do as I was alone. :)
Back to the original questions. The blank holding is definitely not recommended. I do it from time to time, bad habit, but I know my rods intimately and have never broken one. :) The story behind the video you just watched is: While fighting the fish, I realized that I only had a few minutes of tape left in the camera while it was running. I wasn't sure how many minutes left, I wasn't even sure if it was recording at the time, therefore I was trying to get the fish in with minimal fighting time (therefore the blank grabbing), in case the tape run out. Luckily, the fish was landed with still a couple minutes to spare.

I am pretty sure he wasn't bashing Rodney !! he was just asking a question... I believe someone else bugged him about holding his blank in another thread ;D

Who cares how he holds his Rod if he likes grabbing the blank, so be it, why does something like this bother you .
If his Rod breaks, I'm sure he will allready no what the reason is why is broke.
Nice Videos Rodney, Hold your Rod how ever you like.... Fishing Rod that is :P ;D
Ooooh!! Touchy today are we?? ;D
FF, I didn't realise I had criticised Rodney or anyone else, just asked the questions! It certainly doesn't bother me, just interested!
Have you never been interested in anything? ::)
Rod has answered one of the questions, he was in a hurry to land the Steelhead!
Colin.

Colin, I think the answer to the other question you asked is; if you put cork farther up your rod you start changing the action and stiffness.
-
Nope, didn't feel criticized. Even if it was a criticism, it would be welcome as long as done in a positive manner. How else would one learn without criticism? :)
-
Rod being a 100lb weakling he needs the extra leverage... ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Good point. So maybe next time I should hold onto the cork strictly and go for a swim for better video footages. ;)

I would pay to watch that !!!!! ;D ;D ;D and BWI I think Rod is 101 pounds now
TH ;)

Oh ya, that 1 lb must be from his cellphone ;D ;D ;D
Not a bad idea Rod. I believe you'll get ALOT of subscribers just to see that video. :D ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Nope not touchy at all... actually, when you said something about him holding his rod that way then Roll your eyes at it, what kind of response would you like to expect from a rolling your eyes , from the way someone hold there rod
I don't think I mentioned his rod in the main text? ::)
Colin ;D

The camerawoman was hurrying me so I had to work my rod harder as usual. ;)
Notice the beautiful houses on the other side of the slough/river, much different to the type of setting that you would see here.

What did I tell you in the chatroom Rodney? ;D
That your dad has broken three rods by using my fighting technique? ;D
The lesson is... Buy a Stryker Rod, proud sponsor of FWR, indestructable, as proven again and again in our videos. ;D

I believe Russ was complaining about how you were grabbing your rod. It's NOT RECOMMANDED. ;D ;D
-
Let's not be overly critical over Rodney's fish fighting technique. It's been a while he's caught something. ;D
-
Indestructable eh!! Since I traded my main drift rod for flygear, I just may have to get you to hook me up with one of them Stryker rods when the time is right Rod!! ;D ;D ;D
-
who cares how he holds his rod, he flossed that steelhead and I think I see blood.

Yes, the leader was a bit long wasn't it? :-[ ;)

Watch it, only less than five months until I put on my pink salmon clinic in Richmond again. ;D

Yeah, give Russ a call. He's fast when it comes to dealing with customers. The pros of these custom built rods are the wide range of components that you can choose to go with them. The cons would probably be warranty as it is not as good as factory rods. The rod I used in the above photo and in the video is my favorite drift rod for coho and steelhead. There are half a dozen drift rods to choose from in this house yet I continue to stick with that one everytime I head out. :)
