IMO there's something of a disconnect on this Board re:fish classifications.
Bass-the #1 Sport fish in North America-are relegated to the Coarse Fish Forum while Sturgeon-a bottom dwelling sucker mouthed critter most people won't touch-are here in General.
Think About It!!
BTW-before you criticise me personally for bringing this up remember I was fishing/catching both before most people here were born
-
What's your point? Who cares really? Is this a waste of a thread?
-
#1 Sturgeon have been here before you or anyone here was born
#2 The bass found here was illegally introduced
Need I say more?
-
Actually I dont find this an offensive post. He is not just trying to stir anything up with this. I can see his point.
To me sturgeon deserve a certain amount of respect for living this long.

and for being able to live in mud too! :o

#1 sport fish because it's found everywhere. it eats anything and can withstand harsh conditions. it's got a great survival rate because nothing likes to eat it ie.... humans :-X
sturgeon on the other hand, are renowned for their delicate white flesh and priceless roe. here, they are protected because of just that and the fact that their growth and reproductive rate is slow......bass without argument is a lower end fish that is as easy to catch as the common bullhead.
so the fact you've been fishing/catching both before most people here were born.....means what?....that you've been naive longer than most of us?....

CAVIAR....................LET'S GO!

coarse fish? please define, just what is the actual definition of a coarse fish?could it be a term we use to describe certain species of fish that most people don't bother angling for.

Agreed that sturgeon are coarse fish, and so are bass. But a bass is a little coarse fish, and a sturgeon is a big coarse (or maybe coarser? ;) ) fish! Thats enough reason for me to like them. Plus some coarse fish are incredibly cool looking. Pike are one of the nicest looking fish IMO, and they are pretty good predatory fish... worth fishing just to look at them I think.
Bass are just plain ugly, and therefore unworthy of their status.
El 5
That being said, why all the grumpy responses? Not enough fishing?

Bass have "Coarse" scales. Sturgeon don't have scales they have skin (like a shark). This has been stated many times.
-
I think I would rather catch one 5 lbs rainbow trout than 20 pound and a half bass, as if they are introduced into lakes up country they would destroy the trout stocks . Would they not . leave the bass south of the 49th and east of the rockies.
-
Au contrair Dion-- they also have "SCUTES" ;D
-
Scoots. Yes made of cartalidge.
-
So whats a catfish then? ;D
-
Catfish are coarse fish too, as are Carp.
