Title: spring bass fishing
Post by: slamman190 on March 25, 2007, 11:17:54 PM

Well spring is finally here and we just had some sun to prove it.  When does the bass spawn start happening?  Is it too early to start fishing for bass right now?

I have never fished for bass before but I wanted to give it a go this spring and catch some of the little buggers.

Anybody have any tips or hints how to be successful?

Bass we caught on Salt Spring Island last week were filled with roe, but not spawning yet.  And not feeding much either.  I believe they are expected to be spawning roughly between April 15 and June 15 (when you can't keep them).

Where in the regs for region 2 does it say you cant keep them during those dates?

I believe Salt Spring Island is in Region 1. Having participated in the spring bass fishery on St. Mary's lake, I know from experience that there is a catch and release regulation in the spring while the bass are spawning.

I think he is asking for TIPS and not regs.  ;D

Sorry I diverted this thread to rules that don't apply to all the regions.  My suspicion is that bass fishing is about to get good but that it isn't yet.

Has anyone fished Freeman Lake near Whistler for bass? River's Edge shop in Squamish states they have caught smallies in the 6lb range there on rapala's. A friend and I went there last fall, fished for 3 hours and caught nothing.
