What a sunny day today! Went out for an afternoon fishing. Arrived around 1:00PM and decided to try an area in mid river that I have not fished before this year though it had produced quite a few steelies for me in the past. The run is still quite nice after the flood. I worked the blade through the run from top to bottom w/o a take. Perhaps the water is not too great, turquoise green/blue water with about 2 ft visibility. The run is too big to search down a fish with limited visiblity Strange that the river level is not high with the hot sunny day. Looks like snow is not melting yet.
Afterward I decided to go to my familiar spot where I can fish more targeted pocket water and smaller holding spots. No one was there and that was good. I put on a ghost shrimp imitation with deli-shrimp meat wrapped around by copper wire. I worked the water close in w/o any take. Noticing the bright sun, I spotted a piece of rock in the faster rifle. Steelhead like to hide under faster rifles around a rock in bright sun. They feel more secured there. The float drifted by the rock and dipped at the expected target zone. I was ready, and a strong hook set followed by a good battle, with strong runs and 2 aerial flips. But the doe gave up eventually, and she is a 10 lb hatchery. Yummy dinner tonight. :D
They are there, so go get them guys. Tight line. (pics to follow).

There seems to be more steelies in the last few weeks. The March fish are in.
What is a ghost shrimp imitation? Care to elaborate?
Also anyone fishing today (march 7) ? Need an update how clear the water is for tomorrow.
Thanks for the report

Wast as good as the last 2 days, but about 2 feet mid river

Nice Fish :)

Steelhawk that's a beauty. 8) That's also an excellent idea taking the pic of the clarity that would have saved some disagreements awhile ago on this site.

Liketofish, this is my ghost shrimp imitation. it works very well. I caught lots of fish with it, and you don't need to buy a ocean license to pump the stuff. :D It is very simple to make. See illustration:
1. Tie a long shrank hook (size 2/O or 3/O) with a bait loop.
2. Put on the ghost shrimp colour yarn, like chartreuse & red, plus peach, organge or cherise if you like but chartreuse and red are the ones used in catching this steelie.
3. Put on a small grup, so the tentacles are like the shrimp tentacles/legs, quite tentalizing to the fish.
4. Tie a copper wire to the hook eye. At fishing time, impale a small deli-shrimp to the hook point and use the wire to wrap around the shrimp to hold it in place.
Now you have a deadly weapon - good visible colours of a ghost shrimp, life-like movement of the tentacles, and the shrimp scent. You can drift in real slow water or fast water, and it works well and holds well. Save the gas & license fees to pump the real stuff.
It is not the real thing, but close enough and easy to make. Now if only I know how to put the eyes on. ;D
Enjoy and experience with it. Good luck.

Just talked to the tackle store people in Chilliwack and they reported that the heavy rain over night leaves the lower river quite muddy, only about 6" visibility. Too bad.

Steelhawk, thanks for sharing your ghost shrimp imitation. Nice guy. That is a neat imitation. I will save some gas and $ for sure and give it a go.
