I always hear comments about people flossing, snagging, sweaping, etc. and the main comment is they are using too long of a leader. Now what is TOO long? If your short floating is 20" reasonable? How about 25" or 30" even? What about if your bottom bouncing (not the flossing style) for steelhead? Should the length be any different? I realise water clarity plays a part but if you say on average or typically what is ideal length? I personally tend to use what I consider "short" leaders for my floatfishing. By short i mean in the range of 12-16" and sometimes even less. I find this way there is less leader to be waving around in the current. I want my bait near the bottom and the best way to keep it there is keeping it close to the weight. How does everyone else rig?

Actually i decided to change to a name that was a little more related to me. I quit biking all together and the name never had anything to do with fishing so.

I like to use 12-18 inch leaders....if I have something on the hook that has little or no buoyency, e.g. 6" rubber worm....I than use around an 8" leader.....seems to work.....too long in my mind is anything over 25 inches....no need to go any longer....but there is quite a few people who insist on using 30-40 inch leaders.....one day they'll realize how productive a short leader can be....

i use between 10 to 16 inch except for blades where i use a good 20 to 24 inch leader. the blades tend to pull the rig deeper so i space them away from the weights more than other presentations. This length of leader seems to allow the blade more action and flutter as it's not affected as much by the weights.

If you are fly fishing is it still a leader, or is that a tippet? If I'm fishing a sinking line I usually use a leader between four and six feet long. It starts out about 6 feet and gets shorter as I change flies. If I'm fishing a floating line, the leader is the length = to the depth I think the fish may be feeding at, but usually that is at least four feet long.

i like to use 24 to 40 inch leader with a one once bouncing Betty and i swing it in the runs. It gets the bait right in there face and they hammer it.

a lot of "fly fisherman" use really long leaders (tippet) and it basically swings behind the actual fly line and flosses the fish. its the same drift fishing flossing technique, just modified into the fly fishing version. :P

i use between 16-30" i like it on the longer side, i also fish alot of rivers that are usually clear with a little flow(capilano,seymour,chehalis, thompson during the summer)

Speaking of leaders, tippets and tapered leaders, I have a question. If I'm fishing with a tapered leader and I change a couple of flies and the tippet significantly shortens (by a foot or two) is it best to just change the whole damn thing? or can i attach a tippet to the end of the shortened tapered leader? I'm just wondering because I've been fly fishing latley and I'm going through tapered leaders pretty fast (because I just change them). Is there an alternative to tapered leaders without attaching too many lines? say just a leader and a tippet to the fly line? that would save money.

Ok, I dunno if this is what FF was getting at...but this is how I do it, and it seems to work reely well....I use a tapered leader which I make myself...its not too hard and a lot of people do this....now lets say your fishing the Vedder for Steelhead...3 foot tapered leader....make about 2 feet of it 15lb test and the other foot around 10-12 pound...NAIL KNOT...the two pieces of line together...sorry don't have a link on how to tie one.....than once you get so far down your leader just cut the knot and re-tie on another piece of 10/12lb line....works like a damn....so no matter what your technically still in the zone...
