Title: Steelhead strikes
Post by: younggun on February 11, 2007, 10:34:53 AM
Is it just me or are all your steelhead takes soft? So far every steelhead that i've hooked and the ones i haven't felt have been super subtle. Even ont he colorado yesterday it was the littlest downward pressure, my body out of reaction struck and he was there for a second. Even on the worm i dont usually get a hard tug. What have u guys experienced? My way to describe a steely strike is just that u feel some extra weight on ur line!

Most of my strikes have been what you described. The float slowly goes down as if it was getting hung up by a snag.

I agree, all my takes this season have been lite. Last season in about late March April most off the takes were hard.
I miss those times when the Steely's just hammered my drift. Isn't that one of the things that makes steelheading so
exciting?  :)

I usually find the faster the drift the more vicious the strike.  The fish usually have to make their mind up pretty fast that they want it so the take is harder.  In larger systems, in lakier slower water, sometimes the float just stalls and doesn't go under at all or just barely dips.  When you see this you should strike like you mean it because it maybe a suttle bite.  I've seen guys just lift their rod thinking it may be bottom and spend the next ten minutes cursing because they just rolled a fish they could have had on.

I've had strikes where the only indication is a slight hesitation by my float. I've also had fish chase my bait on the retrieve all the way to my feet. So really it varies.

Whether this relates or not...I've heard big bucks tend to come up, take and settle back down so the takes are often very subtle  and are most often lost, Does tend to take and go back to their spot, more hook ups side of mouth and more obvious as well

Of course this is from a book where my limited knowledge is based... :-[

Yesterday i was fishing a run with a lot of chop! And with a fast paced current, and i was drifting a silver colorado through it and all i saw was the float twich no tug on the line, the float just wiggled a little, so i struck and for a second i had a fish on the other end. My most "vicious" strikes have just been when the float slips under, really slow. all the others have been little movements, or i've felt something wrong with the line. Except for one fish on the capilano that just hammered my roe, he hit so hard the floats splashed on the way under, i was fishing for early coho. I guess its because of where i fish for my steelies. Usually its the upper vedder, which means they've seen alot of gear on a very high pressured system.

Oh and i find that smaller fish strike way harder than bigger ones.

The takes I've found this year at least tend to be slow and light and the float goes down similar to a snag. Mind you I prefer to fish water that is walking speed or less so that does give the fish more time to be relaxed about the whole affair. I do know that with coho for instance they love the speed and tend to attack more viciously in faster water.

Why don't you guys take your banter to email. You're ruining what was a good thread.

Steelhead aren't in a Union so the really don't strike.... they bite. Usually hard and I guess maybe like a fencepost.

First fish( Hatchery doe 12lbs )- with fake jensen roebag-float quickly dipped 3 times and disappeared. On the forth I got it.

Second( Hatchery doe 9 lbs)- with a 6" pink worm- float went down like a snagged.

Thrid( Wild buck )- with real roebag- hammered the roe like no tomorrow.

Forth( Wild buck )- with real roebag- hammered the roe

Fifth-( Harchery doe 16.lbs)- hammered the roebag !!!!!

Sixth( Got away )- roebag- took it like a trout- float was bouncing up and down like a little fish

Seventh( Got away )- roebag- grab and run. Float went down so quickly I was surprised.

I think a majority of the fish I hooked quickly take the roe down.....

Steelieman, what a good memory you have.

I have the same experience as most of you and that is the float goes down.  The question that is at the back of my mind is maybe I have not been carefull enough about light bites and wonder how many strikes I have had that got away.  I think I have to watch for it.
