I found this great article this morning and after reading it and my Color Guide to Steelhead Drift Fishing book, I thought it might be useful.

Never seen them here but they say you get less bottom snags with slinkies than with pencil lead?

Yeah, I use the tubing set-up now. Works fine but was curious about the slinkie method as well.

so far I've been using slinkys and other than the fact that you have to take time to  make them they're great up to this point got into a few snags to see if it's true about them not snagging and haven't had a problem yet.

Personally I run BB's about 1/2 the time, and parachute cord sheathed pencil lead the other 1/2. All dependant upon water conditions of course, and both very much have their place.

For the pencil lead, I simply buy bulk parachute cord, cut the pencil lead to the desired size, and melt the ends of the cord around the lead. Suspend from a "quick-change" such that the weight is free hanging (slides up and down your mainlaine above the swivel to the leader). Why you might ask? Because once encased in the cord, the weights are MUCH less prone to snagging. Lead is sticky, and will grab the floor in many areas where the sheathed one's won't. Well worth the few minutes to construct IMHO.

As always, your mileage may vary...  ;D

Gone Fishin' on The Rock always has some in stock. Dunno where on the mainland, as I but rarely get over there. Likely most decent shops will carry the stuff...

Just a quick word to the wise: Parachute cord comes in varying sizes. Make sure that the diameter of the cord in the package you pick up is of sufficient size to go around what you intend to wrap. Only made that mistake once, but perhaps someone else can learn from that  ;D

Heading over to The Stamp this coming weekend. Will check out the cord at Gone Fishin'. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. My guide got an 18 Lb hatchery buck on the weekend, wow !
