Just got back from delivering the draw tickets To Rick at Tim Hortons. Was good to see a good turnout, with a number of old and new faces there. Of course I took some good natured ribbing about last nights hockey game and Rick even gave me a DNE float with a Canuck Logo on it. ;D
With this bad cold it was wise for me not to fish but plan to go up later to deliver a vat of coffee, some donuts and prizes.
The weather is cold,-10 but no wind at the present so I am sure some nice fish will be caught.
Thanks to Rick and others who have done a great job organizing the derby and to the many who have donated prizes.
While they fish I will have to spend time in bed to try and get rid of this cold, dream about the fish they will catch and the Leafs loss last night :'( :'(.
-
Too bad about the cold. :(
How many people did you see this morning? :)

Too bad about the cold. :(
How many people did you see this morning? :)
I was there for only a short time right at 6 and it was a hub of activity with people buying their tickets, bringing prizes, getting coffee and giving me a bad time about the hockey game. ;D
I think I saw at least 25 people but they were coming and going in the 10 minutes I was there.
-
Good luck to everyone out there today. I sure wish I could be there with you guys. ;)
-
I just got in from the derby and had a great time around the well needed fire!!! Great food, thank you to everyone that brought stuff!! It was also nice to put some faces to names. I won't go into detaill about who won the derby, I will let that person tell the story ;) Nice Fish!! Great to see how much was raised for such a good cause. We should do this more often!!! Not just in the winter time :)!!!!!

Well it was a great day on the river. Thank you to Thick Rick for putting on this derby and to every one else that donated prizes, food and gave upo their day to help out.
-
Sandy, I'm sitting in a dark room at 12:40am, can you at least tell me how many people attended and how many fish were landed? ;D :'(
Good to hear that things went well so far. :)
If any of you have photos, please email to info@fishingwithrod.com and I will post them up in the derby album.
Thanks,
Rod
-
Sorry i couldn't make it. Slept through my alarm, not that i would have got up if i woke up. Was to hung over to fish lol. Can't wait to hear reports and see some pics.
-
He absolutely deserves it, but now we have to listen to that until next January. ;) Congratulations Rick, for not just catching the winning fish, but for putting together an impressive event that both entertained all and benefits the Chilliwack River. Well done!
FF, just PMed you regarding photos.
-
Sorry Rod, I thought Rick would like to tell his story!! Rick and Chris let us folks that did not sign up to fish buy tix for the draw so there was extra $$$ going to the cause. My friend Dean brought in the 17.1 fish to get it weighed, he did not know about the derby. He may even join FWR :) He bought a ticket and won some fishing boots, it sure was his lucky day!!!
Lots of great prizes were handed out to lots of folks. I tried to get Dean to lend me his fish so I could have been a late entry with it :) LOL
Hope you are enjoying your trip Rod.

was an awesome event, big thanks to Rick and those who supplied the food and helped organize, also a really big thanks to Highwater tackle, Searun fly and tackle, Hatch matchers, Riverside fly and tackle, Steveston marine, and all others who graciously donated all the great prizes.
-
the Dean fellow sure was lucky, before he caught that huge hatchery fish I watched him land a nice looking wild around 10lbs.
-
Don't forget all the Maple Leaf floats that a lucky angler won. ;D I wonder if he will admit who he is. ;D ;D
-
Good event,we had a good time it raised a lot of money for a good cause, good for Rick.
I caught this nice wild one around nine in the morning.

Here is the 17lb fish that was not part of the FWR Derby
(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/bbronswyk2000/Fishing/IMGP0036.jpg)
It was a great day today despite a few mishaps on my part.
The mishaps:
Woke up early, too early. Had breakfast and got my gear together. Packed up my truck and headed up to pick up my derby partners in Abbotsford. I stopped in to get gas and realized I forgot my pro cured shrimp :(
Got my partners and headed to meet at Tim Hortons off Lickman road to pick up our FWR Derby Ticket. We got our tickets now it was time to head to the river. ONce we arrived it was still dark so we chilled out and stayed warm.
OK it was now just after 7am time to put the waders, boots and jacket on. Oh one problem NO BOOTS!!! I forgot my boots at my front door  So I had no choice but to use my runners. They fit but my toes were curled up and I was incomfortable all day.
Anyways our group got no steelhead on this day. I did get a dolly on but thats it.
I want to personally thank ThickRick for his efforts in organizing this great event. Many prizes were donated from various people and vendors. For this being put on in only 2 weeks I must say it did not seem like it. Also anyone involved give yourselves a pat on the back for giving back to a river that keeps on giving.
Here are a couple photos from the event

Winning and only fish ( Event organizer Thick Ricks 11.8lb fish ) He had the Karma on this day ;)

A big..well done to his ugliness for putting on such an event...just for the record,...ahh I'll let it go and he can dwell in his much deserved glory...Did a great job, no small event, took care of all the prizes etc. AND gave up his fishing time to set it up and get everything ready...Sassygrams and another lady, (sorry for not knowing your name) were very nice to do the cooking etc. Sassy rode ricks back all day as she was only there to help.. ;)
Nice job everyone who showed up and donated...might not be the biggest wad of cash Rick ever had in his pocket...but it IMHO was an impressive geasture by those on this site....Kudo's to all...

The fishing derby was a resounding success what with the number of people competing, volunteering and participating and I can't wait till next years. Thank you so much Rick for putting this together, you did a great job but I hope next year its not so cold. At least I learned a couple different ways to extricate ice from fishing rod eye holes ;D. Thanks Again To Everybody.
-
Just got back and i am nicely recovering from the frigid temp out there today, regardless it was a great day on the river with good people, good food and good prizes ,thanks rick for taking on this derby and a job well done by you and everyone who pitched ,also it was great to meet and chat face to face with all of you . :) :)
-

-
Haha, no he only took the pin and pin rod...and I stress "ONLY" ;D
Great Derby indeed, once again it was great to put a lot more faces to names!
Throughout the day I fished with Got Fish,Testo and Nuggy.
Always great fishing you two(lmfao!!!) and was great to meet you Winston! To bad your bro couldnt make it out.
As far as we now, your brother did say to go to the run where Ricks landed his fish :P
Anyways, cant wait to keep hard at steelie fishing!
-
testo and *lil fisherman* are a bunch of goofs ;D :D
great day fishing with you guys!
-
sounds like an excellent day! Congrats rick! Too bad i missed it :'(
-
hey btw thanks for the door prize to anyone who donates it !
i got a roe sack maker or something
-
Great day indeed. did not get a darn thing but it was a great day on the river non the less ,great to see such a big turnout just woulda been nice to see more fish landed.
-
Was a great event with an awesome turnout!!! Thanks to Rick and all the volunteers/retailers. The temperature was brutal but was nice once the sun came out and no wind. Pounded lots of nice water on the lower river before the derby and didnt see any fish. After the BBQ and raffle me and my buddy checked out a new piece of river that I have not seen since the river changed to see if anything was happening. There was 2 anglers working the nicest looking piece around and after some patience deciding where to start the 2 guys pack up and leave. We slip into their spots and after covering the water pretty good my drennan is buried. Im thinking it's probably bottom again after having to judge the right depth to fish at but to my excitement I get headshakes and its FISH ON!!! After a good scrap keeping the fish in the current to tire out it starts cartwheeling downriver and straight for a pile of sticks sticking out of the water. I try to put the brakes on to keep it going for that direction and up river but I apply to much pressure and I snap my 10lbs leader like no tomorrow. Drennen and all flying back at my feet. :'( Can't wait to get back again.
-
It was a fun event, and even though the fish weren't cooperating as much as was hoped the food, and hospitality more than made up for it. Hats off to Rick, and the people who volunteered their time and efforts, and the stores and other individuals who donated prizes. Hopefully, this derby can be a yearly event.
-
ya the day was almost salvaged but someone (troutslayer) just had to bust that steelie off,but then again at least he had one on ::)
-
An awesome day at the event that Rick had organized :) it was nice to meet a lot of the members and was be able to put faces to the handle names , .There were a lot of great prizes and food from everyone donating their time and efforts to make it happen.
-
The bottle of Kalua thrown in with Chris's floats more than made up for a few leaf logos pasted on them. I'll be sure to wait until the temperature drops another ten degrees before I start using them cause we all know what happens to drennans when you happen to bump them up against a rock in the nasty cold weather. Just kidding, Chris. Nothing bad about winning drennans.
In all seriousness, maybe I'll hold onto one of them to use a sig in case I'm in on another Nuk/Leaf bet in the future. The only problem is I'm a little worried that the plastic might break down before the Leafs do manage to take a game. Does anyone know how long it takes plastic to decompose??
All in all, had a great day, put some faces to names, and had some tasty food. Ate something called venison chilly....someone said it was deer meat which is kind of funny because of how alergic I am to it.
Hey Nosey...glad to hear that you like to fish chronies. Hopefully, the flies will work well for you!
-
Well I would like to say thanx to everyone that made it out today !!! we raised $1040.00 for a great cause and we had a blast !! it was really good to meet all of you and to see some of you I haven't seen for a while :) the donations were amazing and the food was excellent !!! looks like we will have to do it again next year ;D ;D once again thx to all the people that volunteered their time and to those that made very generous donations!! I think our prize list rivalled that of the Boxing Day Derby ;D
TR
-
Good event,we had a good time it raised a lot of money for a good cause, good for Rick.
I caught this nice wild one around nine in the morning.
That fish doesn't look like a normal steelehad? Almost like a coho ???
Oh, was there a fish in this picture??? The thing that caught my eye was that BEAUTIFUL logo on the hat. I'm sure that must have been what the photographer was focussing on.
-
It will be a difficult and expensive problem to fix and that is why they need all the money they can get. With out the support it will make it difficult to get further funding from the province. That is if there is any funding. At least they can say to the government that they are trying.
-
Was that the first fish on the new pin Rick? Congrats, and good on ya for setting this all up and raising some funds... ;D

;D A big thank you to Rick for organizing such a wonderful event. I had a great time and was real nice to put faces to handles. Congrats on the fish - first one I've ever seen and she was beautiful.
It was nice to see the fellows I previously met, and was great to meet some news one.
The prizes were unbelieveable, I love my hats and have wanted those ties for my rod :)
Thank you to everyone who brought the food and drinks, Chris for the coffee, and to all the suppliers who donated prizes.
Just a note, next time someone posts a pic of me, it won't be off my fat my friend but of a big smile while holding a fish :)
See you on the river,
-
It was a set up for ThickRick to get rid of that oversize black and white Stormtech stuff. ;)
Wish I could have gone, but leg surgery held me back. :'( Thanks and kudos are due for the Thick One!
(Time to start posting and stop lurking)
-
Yep a great thanks to Rick for organizing that event. It was a great day, a bit cold, but still a great day. It would have been a perfect day if I had landed the fish I hooked... Well next time.
-

You too Merc. thanks for the stoogie too...Was an excellent day once we ditched girlie man the hole jumper!!! Look forward to hooking up and fishing with you guys anytime!!! give me a shout!!! Can't wait to see Rick and his pin rod...Man I'm not going upstream of him!!!
SAssy...don't worry...it's not THAT big... ;D
-
Was a great day yesterday and despite low fish numbers I think everyone went home happy and satisfied that they had contributed to the river and got to meet and greet folks from the forum.
It is fitting that Rick won this derby, his efforts to pull this off over the past couple weeks were amazing... dare I say , he deserves it ;D. And on that note, thanx to all the great folks that were helping out.
The 'Venison chilli" was indeed deer meat, coastal blacktail to be exact. The recipe is secret ;D... but I hope you all enjoyed it.
The Steveston Marine crew were happy to be a part of this event and look forward to supporting next years FWR steelhead derby.
-
This looks like that corner above apache, and the washout at the spawning channel... Am I right?

Hey I don't nkow who can answer this but does anyone know what they will do with the money and how will they help the claybanks? i'm just wondering because it seems like a rather difficult problem to fix.
David Lamson sent this email to me today, which answers your question. Keep in mind that the Chilliwack River Action Committee is not just doing work to provide better fishing on the river, but to enhance habitat and undo some of the damages that both man and nature have done to the fish. As Dave once said, "For every fish that I caught, I want to put five back."
The donation of $1040 to the Chilliwack River Action Committee will all be used for habitat restoration. CRAC directors are volunteers and do not charge for any of the work of doing research, preparing applications, or project administration.
Our main project continues to be working on clay slides of which there are nine on the Chilliwack River. Six of these have been worked on over the years, but some of that work was over 15 years ago and needs updating. Over the years the river naturally changes so adjustments are needed. Clay siltation stresses fish, seals spawning gravel, and diminishes aquatic life needed for fish food. We're starting with a gap analysis and siltation/sedimentation study this spring. The other main project is constructing off channel rearing and overwintering ponds as wet areas are always diminishing. The money donated will go with other funds raised to be seed money when applying to funding agencies. This type of habitat restoration work is expensive as hiring the necessary engineers and heavy equipment is costly.
The Chilliwack/Vedder has long been known as a world class steelheading river. Good habitat is essential to the sustainability of our resource. We must look after it.

I meant actually just above that, where that big cedar tree sits at the edge...
I'm not sure if that's where it is, it could be around the old butterfly too, I guess I'll have to go for another walk this weekend...
Cheers,
Nicole

Well, that was a great day yesterday. A very impressive turnout, awesome prizes, great food. Incredible job in pulling it all together Rick, and everyone that volunteered there time. Count me in again for next year. ;) Oh yeah, congrats as well on winning the Derby Ricky, as much as I hate to say it, nice looking fish, and couldn't have gone better in my opinion. You deserved it. ;) ;D ;D

On behalf of the Chilliwack River Action Committee thanks so much to all that took part, that included, Rick along with his group of organizers, the anglers, the donors of prizes, all the food and the wood that was a life savers for us all. Must not forget the cooks, Mary, sassygrams and others. Also to Xgolfman for picking up the full bill for the vat of coffee.
The $1040 was a very nice donation but to see so many willing to help contribute in the ways I mentioned is so rewarding to David Lamson and his small committee that work countless hours trying to make the river a better place for not only the fish but us anglers as well.
I will be mentioning this event to The Environment Minister at our meeting tomorrow as we strive to get more hatchery steelhead on other rivers in British Columbia and pry more money from the Living Rivers Fund to repair the slides on the Chilliwack.
When a small group of anglers can come up with this money for a one day event after only two weeks of planning then to me in the bigger picture all levels of government have a bit of catching up to do.
Once again thanks to all you great people that turned out yesterday even though I donot think their was a Leafs fan among you. ;D ;D ;D

Thanks everyone for organizing the event. I certainly appreciated winning the bait caster rod, as my old one is a cheapie and sucks. It was good to put a face to a bunch of names.
A buddy of mine (who was not in the derby) was walking near ThickRick on the way to Peach Road that the morning, and as he was getting geared up a fellow told him that one fish just came out of there just a few moments before, and before he had his hook tied on - ThickRick had his fish to the beach. He was pi**ed, as that was the closest he got to a fish all day. >:( I guess the moral of the story is to get your gear ready the night before. ;)
Thanks again - and I am sure we will see you out there sometime soon.
