I'm likely going to be buying my son a Convergence drift rod for Christmas.
Although it will be used primarily for float fishing, he will want to try his hand at botom bouncing for socks.
For those of you that have used a Convergence for this fishery, how does it handle repeatedly chucking 3 oz of lead?

THe big rod can handle the BB's and you can still use it for float fishing. Sorry I don't know the line rateing off handbut I think it was 12-20lb. I have three for some strange reason. That's my sockeye and low water Fraser rod. I've also used it for high water Steelhead in theVedder.

Medium is rated 12-20lb
Med-Heavy is rated 12-25lb
That is for the newer blanks with a lifetime warranty.

HI8XC, what is the differences between the Convergences and the Techium (sp?) series? Thanks.

Best thing about them is there warrantee. you snap it, you get a new one right away.

I don't bottom bounce for Socks--as a matter of fact I don't fish for Socks in the rivers at all..., I fish for them in the chuck.....I know the rod, and you'll do ok with the 3 oz of lead...
However, how about if you introduce your son to the "non" bottom bouncing methods of fishing out there....like bar fishing....and show and educate him as to why tecnicalities in the regulations don't mean bottom bouncing is necessarily the best way to carry on the "sport"?
With a plentiful fishery coming next year for socks...8 million... there should be some good opportunities for Sockeye.....wait until the guides out there are saying ..."the time is NOW".....get together 4 adults, and your kids, charter a boatr, and fish your limit of Sockeye...and have more sockeye than you and your family will know what to do with.
I believe there were guide boats out there who did just that..a few boats had 25 to 30 from a 6 hour charter....but you have to wait for the "time is now" and make sure you say..it's all meat baby... :) :)

The Technium series is made with TC-4 graphite. No clue what the composition is, but it is made by crossweaving the fibre like the plies of a tire. The convergences are made with IM-6 graphite. The Technium is a very tough rod and will take way more abuse than the convergence. There is about a $60 price difference. You will however find that the technium is a little more noodly than the convergence and the convergence will be slightly more sensitive. This is due to the fibreglass content in the technium i would assume.

will be great for him, he can bottom bounce and float fish the fraser. Remember the PINKS will be in. yeha! i love those fish, bring some betties and some pencill lead, a few floats and ur set for the summer. remember pink is the optiimum colour for both, atleast if worked for me! ;D

If you recall I said "Although it will be used primarily for float fishing, he will want to try his hand at botom bouncing for socks" My son is introduced to the variety of non bottom bouncing techniqes for 50 weeks of the year. For years he's wanted to join me bottom bouncing for socks and I can't wait to have him join me. Then we go back to float, spin, bar and fly fishing for the balance of the year.
Yoru rod advice however was greatly appreciated.
