So - I've whacked my bush and come across a body of water, say a backwater of the Fraser. What "signs" should I look for that would indicate a good probability of fish (Trout, Pikeminnow, carp ...) being there? Jumping or rising fish, obviously, but if that that, what? Insect or vegetarian life? Overhanging trees? Depth of water? Current?

Structure in water, overhangs, cut banks, still backwaters, hatches, presence of fry. And most importantly, rising fish. Most cutthroat show themselves, so where there is one rising fish there may be three or four more.
Be prepared to do some serious wandering :)
And don't forget to have fun.

And since you are already there, the proof is in the water.
Throw a few lines in there and comb through it.
You'll find out real quick if there are any fish in that piece of water.

I have a spot I used to fish when I was a kid, and tried a few times last year. Can't remember EVER catching anything there. So, I posted on another forum about it, asking if there are ANY fish there and if it's worth my time to continue. Got my *ss realmed for giving away people's "secret spot", and that yes, there were lots of fish there. Guess I'm just unlucky...
Anyway, thanks Nicole for the suggestions. First reasonably nice Sat or Sun I'm off to Agassiz to see if any of my old haunts are still accessable (I know the slough in our farm is COMPLETELY filled in now :( )
