Hit the Cheakamus at about 7:30 am this morning with two buddies; a fair number of chum past the second bridge and further down one of the guys caught and released a nice Jack Coho (thanks for the help identifying it LF, BC, BS and BM). Colorado blades seemed to be the thing. Moved down river, nothing much happening, visibility three feet, maybe less. Tried out the new Canon SD450 water-proof housing.
Moved to the Squamish and the situation didn't improve, for me anyway. Cold and wet. Packed it in at 3:00pm and headed back to downtown Van. Maybe shoulda tried the Cap this morning afterall. Still, a day on the river, better than a day stuck inside.

Looks like it may be a coho Jack. Also looks like it is a hatchery. Couldn't tell you for sure though from that pic, but that would be my guess. ;)

Hehe, could tell by the dis shaped spots. Trout are usualy always round spots where as coho have almost oval spots. It would of been good to take home to the frying pan!!! YUM-FRICKEN-YUM! :D

these "jack cohos" or "trout" - I caught two of those on Thursday in the Cap - very small, but very nice looking - thought they would have tasted good fried up but released them as I wasn't sure what they were. Can someone tell me what they were?
I don't have a camera or I would take pictures :) They were very small, but nice looking and spots all on the top .... any ideas?

sassygrams, the ones you caught on the Capilano River are most likely steelhead smolts or small resident rainbow trout, which range between 4 and 8 inches in length. Most of these fish will be making their way into the ocean, where they'll spend a few years and eventually become adult steelhead. Jack coho, are male coho salmon that spend a couple of years less in the ocean than other mature adults. They return to the river, participate in spawning just like other adults. Due to the length of time they spend in the ocean, they are significantly smaller. They are small, but not as small or slim as a steelhead smolt, generally 12 inches in length or above.
