Title: FLOOD WARNING - Chilliwack
Post by: c-pin on November 06, 2006, 01:51:34 PM
On Global TV on the Noon News.

Wilson Road in Yarrow - Mandatory Evacuation due to the river flooding in that area.

If anyone from FWR heading to the Vedder to fish in the next couple of days, please be careful!

This is crazy .... just a month ago, we were complaining that there is no rain .... now there are flood warnings.

Just got back from a look and it is wild and very dangerous. The house just below the Vedder Bridge is trucking in rock and gravel to protect the house. The amount of debris is amazing. Just heard that they had to rescue one of the squatters off the island just above the Vedder Bridge. I lived just above the Vedder Bridge in 1948 when it was built and have seen quite a few of these high water incidents. That's why I live up on the hill. Have a few more pictures that I will send to Rodney to see if he will post them.

Just came from the Vedder crossing. IT IS WILD!
Both CBC and CTV have satellite trucks so watch for it at 6:00.
Search and rescue hellicopter is out looking for, can you believe it, some missing fishermen. As though they haven't got enough to worry about.
Please stay away from the river for the next day or two.

Those pics and videos are spooky!! :o :o  I have't been out here that long, but that is the craziest I have ever seen the river.  Has me thinking poor fish and I hope that everyone comes out of this safe and sound.  So anyone think that river will be fishable by the weekend?? ;)

I guess after things settle down a bit, everyone will be on the same footing in having to find new & secret favorite fishing spots.  The old ones are long gone & the river as we knew it is changed.  It will be interesting to see how the gravel removal sites have filled in.

Just got word from the boys, (well, my "boy" anyways) that they are helping fill sandbags, I believe at the firehall on Chwk Lake Rd.
Sure hope they can be of some help. Good work guys!  :)
Certainly hope this weather starts improving, although as I'm sitting here typing this, I can hear the rain splashing on the windows again. :(
Hopefully things dont get too much worse. Glad to be sitting high and dry on KW road, although, who knows for how long...  :o ;)

They showed some cows stranded on a high spot on the evening news. Who knows what happened to them? I remember I think it was 89 when the river took out a few houses and changed course in a few spots. looks like we can expect some big changes after the water recides. I wonder if that pick up will still be there. Looks like some folks will wake up owning waterfront lots. :-\

I watched the news at 6 and man is that river flowing :o I hope everyone is ok. Everyone sure is gonna have to go searching for a new spot for the upcoming steelhead season. This is what happens when to many fisherman wish for rain at once. :D
Title: Re: FLOOD WARNING - Chilliwack
Post by: GoldHammeredCroc on November 06, 2006, 07:01:19 PM
Yeah thats some impressive footage.  All rivers across the lower bit of the province and even into Washington state were looking over the banks.  Squamish is only area that doesnt seem too concered as its only at 27 feet or something like they said  ??? The Snoqualmie falls were rather impressive and so was the footage of Shannon Falls.
Title: Re: FLOOD WARNING - Chilliwack
Post by: Hook Set on November 06, 2006, 07:07:56 PM
Your right GoldHammeredCroc, Shannon falls was impressive. Yea they said the squamish river has raised 24 feet ??? How much can it take?
Title: Re: FLOOD WARNING - Chilliwack
Post by: troutbreath on November 06, 2006, 07:46:23 PM
29 feet for Squamish before flooding. Ive seen Chum pass under my car going fishing at the Chehalis once. I bet that river is pretty blown out as well Probably has diverted away from the hatchery again.

:o That river is flowing - wow!  Anyone hear about the lost fisherman???  Was he found?  I sure hope so.

Steelhead season which that one fellow had mentioned - when does that start?  What kind of gear is used for that?  I normally fly fish but I don't know how heavy my rod is if it would be good enough, not very heavy....  Let me know if you can.

Eveyone keep safe.

i was out there today and noticed a mini van half submerged, at keith wilson bridge. hopefully that didn't belong to the fishermen they're looking for  :-\.

its nuts out there. i went up and the road past apache was washed out.  this massive flooding is not doing the fish any favours.

I heard there closing the road that goes past On the way to local traffic only until the river settles down
I heard that too from one of my friend live over there,so better stay home and wait for better condition. Safety first

We used to get some whicked Typhoons in Taiwan and HK, but it is pretty far for a single storm to travel, although this could just be the edge of it as it disperses...

Actually this rainfall is caused by the Pacific Ocean subtropical jet stream that brings moisture from Hawaii.

Forget roe, this is how the locals catch their fish. ;) The photos were taken this morning when Chris and several others discovered chum salmon (very fresh ones as you can see) being trapped (in what used to be a trail) as the water started to drop in the canal. Global news crew was also on site to film the whole rescue operation. They estimated around 35 chum salmon were scooped and released into the main flow. You can see more of this tonight in the news.

Great work Chris, George and Grizz. Those are really fresh chum and it's good to know they will now have a chance to survive and spawn.
Also that area you were in is where we took out quite a bit of garbage on our last river cleanup ! Just shows how important it is to contunually remove this garbage so that when the inevitable high water comes, it does't wash back into the main river system. All  of the 2.8 tonnes of garbage we removed on Rivers Day is in the land fill and not in the river system, thanks to all the 225 plus volunteers who came out and helped on Sept 24.  ;D

It was actually quite a bit of footage considering it was about saving Chum. Imagine if they were pike minnows, would have been a mini series. I saw the cows get away safe too, which was good, cause if it were Alberta?

All the Coho were washed  back to the ocean, I hear were gonna have a coho/ steelhead season when the fish are able to make it back up again. ;D

amazing how the river changes so quick, Peach was a foot from spilling over, now its way down like 2 meters. Definately not fishable below vedder crossing yet.

I saw it tonight Chris. So that's how you fish ? With a net !!

Funny you should mention his method of fishing!

Buckeye and I met with Chris and the rest of the hardworking guys for lunch, and, as usual the topic being discussed was "how to" and "how to not" fish.  :D Anyways, that being said, Chris kindly informed us that when he started fishing, he used to fish with a pitchfork!!! :o ;D

I guess his thoughts and his speech were having a tough time cooperating with each other, but then again, it's probably pretty hard to be able to think straight all the time with a leafs hat on your head!  ;)

Today's photos, taken by Terry. I'll let Chris tell the story later on today.

Actually the plastic holders that had two full beers were wrapped around the dead chum. Terry said this caused it to die, the plastic rings that is, all the more reason to not throw them out as they can tangle with all sorts of wildlife.

I told Terry this shot could be used for a good ad, 'it pays never to drink and swim". ??? ::)
Now that a bad one, anyone with other captions that could be used more original than that?

Ok, now that picture makes some sense looking at it again. Some guy probably through that Rig on his hook, and the chum went for it and busted him off. Cant think of any other explaination... ;D

A light rain started here in Vedder Crossing about 4:30 am--Right now at 9:15am it is raining very heavy--The flood victims may need some good luck to get through this day.

Moved one chum this morning after going for the birds that Big Fisher does not want me to talk about. ;D We have now saved 139 from certain death, spotted two more but water too deep yet to get at.

It has been an interesting week may try to condense the week into one journal. River this morning is of course still mud, it may be coming from Chilliwack Lake as it has colored up before . If so it will be a while before we are fishing. Going to a CRAC meeting now, will be late but wanted to check the chum first. After meeting going for some cutthroat for the brood capture program. Better get at it or Stevie O will be after me. ;D ;D ;D

No time to post on Sports Chat how well the Leafs are doing. ;D ;D ;D Poor BS, TR and the boys must be having a very hard time these days. Of course FA will be owing me some floats. ;D

To get back on topic their boys are falling as hard as the rain is outside now, I think things should be okay flood wise this time as it is fairly cold out and it will be snow in the hills. While the temperature stays that way things should be OK.  Cheers.

As of 1:25 pm the Vedder seems to be holding its own-I just came back from haveing a walk at Peach Road and things at this time still look stable-There are still some wood pieces comeing down the river and of coarse it is pure mud.

Chris ( or anyone)... Do you have any info on how the slides/clay banks have held up to the deluge?

For sure - local hills are piling up too.  Ski Hills were saying approx. 40 cm or so over the weekend.

A happy Veterans Day to all the old guys (Chris, Lew and the boys up on the Chedder)..(( I'm a vet. too but not like your generation))...Hope everyone had a moment to take some time and stop and remember what these guys did for you and their country.....

Chris, when you say it's still all mud, is there any point in fishing or is totally useless? Is there anything we can do to help up there as were not fishing it??? Are there any groups meeting to try and get fish back to  the water or anything like that? Any need for volunteers to do clean up, limb cutting anything like that??? Give me a shout or post on here if you have the need for bodies...I'm only an hour away...

Still muddy and will be for a while best to wait a while although the Fraser is starting to clear up. I hope we do not get another Pineapple Express from the 50th state or we will have a real mess with the snow that is in the mountains. Nothing planned re cleanup but there is a fair amount of garbage along the high water mark in some places that could be dealt with.
