Finally got out today, it's been a while with working lots these days. Was trying to break my unlucky streak of wild adult Coho's today and finally land a hatchery. Only fish I have retained this season have been jacks. Get to the first spot just at first light to find me and my buddy the first ones there. Put on all the gear and head to the water and stake out are spot until light shows itself. Start fishing for a while and the water keeps on rising, getting cloudier every 1/2 hour. Start working a seam right up against a rock bank in the trees with fresh boraxed chum roe. Float went for a dive and I miss it. Fish for sure as 1/2 my roe is stolen. Recast it out in the same spot and float is buried. A good sized jack is on my line for a couple seconds before it gains freedom and I lose it. Couple minutes later arond the same spot float is buried, good hookset, short battle and I bring in a hatchery jack to shore and decide to retain in. Next is my buddy Nik who has also just showed up and hes into a nice hatchery jack too. Couple more missed fish and still no adults. River becomes unfishable and decide to head to our next destination. This time with the spinnings rods and a full box of spoons. It is pouring rain now with wind which would create problems for casting some of the time. Catch and releause a couple chum on a Brass Fire Stripe Croc until one decides to snap my 10lbs main line and there goes my spoon. I retie on the same spoon in nickel variation and miss the odd tap. We pack up our stuff to go for a late lunch and dry off. My spinning rod is still assembled and I tell my buddy "1 more cast for good luck" It was about halfway through my retrieve when wham I get a good hit. Set the hook and the fight is on. At first it feels like a chum but I get it closer to shore and start to see the flash. It's a big Coho. Get it into shore after it takes a couple short sprints. "Is it a hatchery?" I ask before sliding it to shore, it is and the 9lbs female is brought up the bank.

Got back after lunch and the water came up quite a few inches from when we left. Just more chums brought in and released and my buddy managed a coloured up buck just before dark.
Back to the Canucks game and may head out for Sturgeon shortly. ;D ;D ;D

For the last three weeks I have been reading FWR reports wishing for Coho. Unfortunately I was in China where I couldn't do anything about my need to coho hunt. Well, I just got back to Vancouver yesterday and man what a change in weather. When I left it was warm enough that I didn't take a jacket with me and when I got back I was freezing while waiting for my shuttle at the airport.
While away I arranged to go fishing with Funfish and we got together at 8:30 so off to the rivers we go. First stop, Pointa Vista ;D No steak and egg on menu. :-[ Oh well, that's okay. My stomach is still kinda messed up. Probably due to the food on the 12 hour plane ride :-X
First stop after breakfast is Allison. Once we got there we decide that due to the heavy rain and the fact that the run requires us to cross a side channel we would not risk it. Coho fishing is something we live for but not willing to risk our lives for it. Next stop. Mid river to our secret spot. Don't bother asking. We don't see much activity, but I was eager to fish so away I go. Unfortunately I didn't have any roe ready so I was using some wool. I was able to hook into something I will swear is a Coho. All I saw was a slightly red fish with no streaks. Unfortunately I was setup with light gear, 20lb main, 10 lb leader and #4 hook. Fish got into the rapids and bye bye.
After about an hour of fishing on the vedder we decided to try Chehalis. When we passed the hatchery we saw someone with a couple of Cohos getting into their car so we got our hopes up. Once we got to a spot that Funfish assures me should offer some opportunity we saw that there were already two others there so off we go to search out another location. The river was extremely high and murky so we figured it was gonna be quite a challenge. But I didn't care. I was fishing. ;D After a couple hours of no success and rain getting me wet and cold my enthusiasm was diminishing so I was thinking about going home but Funfish was not willing to give up so we continued. Soon after Funfish has a small coho on and tries his best to keep it from the rapids. Unfortunately the fish gets the line snagged up with a bush that was now growing in the water due to the high water levels. Bye Bye fish. Oh well. We keep trying. It was starting to get dark and I was starting to feel miserable when suddenly I have a fish on. Not sure about what I had Funfish cries out, Chum. A really clean one. My joy slightly deminished as I was trying to figure out how to release this fish without taking a swim Funfish corrects himself and says "Coho". I take a closer look and see that it is Hatchery First one in the freezer this year ;D
Even though I got wet, cold and miserable. I am not going to be skunked this year. :D
Good luck to you all.

Hey Aurora, I'm pretty sure i was fishing this spot Friday night and that little channel was quite a treat to try and cross. The only thing that saved me coming back was the fallen logs across it. It was chest deep and moving fast. I tried to keep the log down stream of me but the river sure wanted to try and sweep me under it. At one point I thought i was going down stream.
It was worth it though. The fish were stacked deep in the tail end of that pool. Hugging that bar that runs down the middle. Nothing chrome but some nice jacks, and some older coho and springs. Had 7 in total to the beach.
