tired of the snaggers at the vedder and stave so i decided to make my first trip to the squamish this season. fished there only once last year and got skunked. Me and buddy arrived at the river at around 10am and picked my spot just downstream from mouth of mamquam. not too crowded there this morning, as there were only about 10 - 15 fishermen insight. Water clarity was about 3 feets and the weather was gorgeous! (chilly as hell though). Guess what, this was the first time ever i fished in a wader ;) what a change eh.
Started fishing with cherise wool and in the middle of the drift the dink float dived and as i set the hook, fish on! It took me about 3 minutes to land my first ever squamish salmon :) it was a buck chum, moderately coloured(would've been a keeper at the stave/vedder), took a quick pick and he was back on his way. 10 mins later another doe took the same wool hard, fish on! another fight and a nice looking doe was landed not long later. It was a keeper :-*
things slowed down a little at around 1pm, two seals were wandering around in the area we fished. I switched to orange wool, and it turned out to be one of the few smart decisions i made in my life. Got a fish on on my first cast with the new wool, and another chromer buck was landed 3 mins later. another quick pic and i sent him back to the river to get his job done. All in all i hooked into 8 fish and landed 5 of them, one of the three that got away was a spring, in around 15 - 20 lbs range. a little dark though. buddy caught his limit in a span of 20 mins, and released a wild bow (15 inches) Lots of fish to be had, just gotta bare the coldness though. Packed it up at 3pm, and i am planning to go again next Monday. :)
pics are following up

Sinaran's photos from today are attached, log in to view below.
Yeah ok, they are kind of chrome. ;)

nice chromers! In case you don't know, it's not a good idea to wear gloves when handling a fish that you are going to release because it removes its protective slime. But good on ya for not being greedy and giving it a chance to spawn. I was up there on Sunday + Monday caught a whack of chums and had a nice ho on that got off close to shore. It hammered my small silver luhr jensen metric spinner in a pool a couple flyfishers had already gone through and hooked only chum. Bright orange puff balls with orange wool worked best for the chums.

Can't blame him for wearing gloves on a freezing day.

sounds like you had a great day on the flow nice looking dogs you have there ;D

Great report and great pics, thanks ! Oh BTW, forgot to ask. I would like to head up to the Squamish River this weekend but having never been there (to fish), I have no idea where to go. I know there is a local tackle shop, should I stop in there first? Any help would be appreciated. Where can I get those neoprene socks? Sounds like I may need them :)
-
the local tackle shop is called River's Edge. The address is 40022 goverment road. It is just north of the Mamquam river.

Me too (I hope). I'm planning on taking the fly rod. I've tied up more "chum stingers"! If you guys see me - please say "hello"![

I'm thinking Sunday....

Keep an eye on that hydrograph. If the forecast is actually accurate this time, it maybe a good idea to focus on the valley rivers instead of the Squamish this weekend. With the mild temperature and rain in the next several days, it is likely that it will not be fishable. :(

I have been watching the weather report like a hawk so far this week. Calling for heavy rain on Friday and clouds and showers every other day untill Sunday. Lets just hope its not enough to blow it out.
-
I am headed up there for first light thursday, I was expecting to fish in the rain, but hopefully it will hold out till afternoon. it only took 6 or 7 hours of rain last thursday to blow everything out, I'll post tomorrow evening when I get back.

hey this is my first time on this site, as I usually go on BCFR .... think I'm headin to the Squish on Sunday fro some fly action .. any suggestions for Coho flies? I always get tons o'silver chum when I'm there, but no coho yet.
If you see some shorter dude chattin it up to everybody on Sunday, come by and say hi, as its probably me
Later

just a short note on my day on the squamish. fished first light about 1/2 mile above Judd rd. should have stayed in bed.not alot of vis, and it got worse the more it rained, which was alot. no coho to be found, and even the chum bite was slow in the morning. turned around after noon, nonstop action, really clean fish, lots of acrobatics, lots of fun, but by 4:00 vis was less than 6 inches, and river up at least a foot.to top it off, it was really wet. freezing level low, quite a bit of wet snow, but it will be all melted tomorrow. I would imagine that it will be awhile before it's fishable again.
