Title: Vedder Friday October 27th!
Post by: Big Steel on October 27, 2006, 06:43:46 PM
Well, got to the river for first light, was all rigged up, then the sun came up and I realized that it was going to be tough sledding.  The water had maybe a foot vis, but on the plus side, it was up what looked like almost 2 feet. :o

Figured, whatever.  I was here and I was going to see what I could get.  Second cast with my special roe, bam fish on!!  Spring. :-\  After letting that one swim away, got into another and saw that there was a lot of spring rising in the area, so not wanting to play with them much, I moved down river a bit to look for a better water.  Found a stretch that looked a bit better, and tied on a Blade.  Before long, float goes down and I am into something that felt a bit frisky, but only for a mount as it spit the hook.  Not to many casts after that, the float goes down again, good hookset this time and a fish come rolling to the surface, looking to be in decent shape, after a spirited battle, this comes to hand, and after a quick photo op, the 10lb wild is back where it belongs!! ;)

After that had no more success at that hole so I moved a ways down river and was able to have some success there with 5 more Springs, all in decent shape. But no more Coho.  So I moved further down river, to the lower end, water down there had pretty much no Vis, so I looked for some of them ponds.  The ponds are pretty much gone, but they are still holding fish.  I could have sworn that I saw a couple Ho's Surface, but the only thing I could hook into was 5 Chum. All of them were in pretty good shape and put up a pretty good fight.
That was my day.  From first light to 5 pm.  But at least I was able to get into a nice Coho when it didn't look to promising to begin with. ;)

Nice job bs. Can't wait till sunday to try my luck with the fly rod again. Maybe this time I can catch something a little bigger then last time. I am hoping the wife takes tomorrow off of work so that I can take a drive after the little guys soccer game to check out the water on one of the other rivers on my side of the fraser. I think I will hide the gear in my trunk so the wife thinks that I am just going for a drive  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D . Mind you she would never believe me if I told her that I am just going to check the water levels. Hope you can make it out with searun and I on Sunday for a little hike  ;D ;D  ;) ;) .

Can I ask how you guys set up your blades? Do you set it up like a short float set up, or what? Its been two years since I landed a coho on blades, and I am starting to wonder if I am doing it wrong.

thanks
Vince

Trust me you cant be doing too much wrong. My first cast every using blades was this year around sept. 15 and I hooked into a 2-3lb coho. Definately got me believ'in, but wasnt so lucky with them after that. It showed me switching up your lure is worth the effort.

Also I got into my first 2 coho on blades with a 3o'clock cast to a 12 o'clock drift, so I definity speculate they go for the slow tossing of the blade underwater.

18" leader from the pencil lead. Float on the mainline depending on the depth of water you're fishing.

a split ring two swivles and a blade, set it to about a foot off bottom, and when u drift it either free spool it in a pool and slightly hold back in a run. At the end slow swing it across the tail out!
