Title: Fishing with Rod Vedder River Spring Derby?
Post by: Big Steel on October 10, 2006, 04:37:45 PM
Was thinking that it might be fun to have a Vedder Spring Derby with some different rules. Something like If you want to keep the fish that is fine, but we would suggest releasing them.  Also, fishing boundaries would be from above Keith Wilson up to Wilson Rd and below.  Sizes would be determined by the measurements and formula.  It would be a team competition, thus putting less stress on the fish when you have a buddy there to help you.  The pic would be to verify that the fish was not a boot. What do you think?
Any other suggestions would be good, and was thinking about this coming weekend as we wouldn't want to do it to late, as the Springs would be getting in worse shape by the day.
Also was thinking of a $20 entry fee, paid when we meet up in the morning. ;)

Yes Bird that is fine if you and your Dad enter.  The reason it would be that low on the river is for a couple simple reasons.  First, I along with some otehr from this forum were up river this weekend and we didn't see one clean Spring.  But later in the day we did see many rather clean springs in the mid river area below Wilson rd.  Also, I wanted to keep as many of the meat holes as possible out of the equation.  I don't want any unethical means used for the catching of these fish.  THEY BITE MOST OF THE TIME.  No need for the meat holes. ;)
Also Sunday sounds good to me as well. ;D

If you guys are doing it on Saturday, remember that the Help Habitat Fundraiser is also on. I have a suggestion... :)

Make the entry $10 (20 is quite steep), set aside a small amount (20, 30) for first place, donate the rest to the help habitat fundraiser at the end of the derby for a good cause. ;)

Also come to the fundraiser, it's a salmon BBQ this year, should be a good one. :)

That may just be a good idea Rodney.  But we would have to see who could come out for Satuday!  I would think that $20 would be good and half the proceeds go the the Fundraiser!  How does that sound?  I can go either day so.....

No not rich, but....  This is a team competition.  Besides more money for the fundraiser and as you said it is for a good cause!!  BTW, when is the BBQ?  We could have that be the end fishing time. ;D

BBQ at noon, but make sure you stick around at 1pm and see me collect the $1000 grand prize. ;)

So this is what I came up with so far, winning team take all!!  Half the prize money goes to the fundraiser and winner will be determinied by combined weight of the team.  Pics must be taken to ensure that the fish is not a total boot. The weight will be determined by measurements and the formula that I don't know just yet, so if someone could look after that that would be great.  If you are not keeping the fish, take care in getting the measurements and keep the fish in the water.  That is why there is 2 people to a team. ;)

Title: Re: Fishing with Rod Vedder River Spring Derby?
Post by: Big Steel on October 10, 2006, 05:34:45 PM
Keep in mind though, this is only a go if we get enough teams, so far we have enough for 2 teams, and the quitting time looks like it would be somewhere around 11:30 which wuld give us around 5 hrs of fishing time!! ;)
Title: Re: Fishing with Rod Vedder River Spring Derby?
Post by: Big Steel on October 10, 2006, 05:38:43 PM
So we would have to have a pic of the measurements also?
Another good idea, one pic with the measuring tape and a trophy shot if you like, but the trophy shot is not really needed!!  But we are looking for honesty as well.  With 2 people is shouldn't be that hard to get a pic of the length and girth. ;)

Saturday looks good, who is in for saturday? :) Who would step up to be Shane's partner?

One more thing, as long as one person on the team is from FWR that is fine.  So if you have someone to come with that isn't a member of this site, that is fine. ;)

Don't mind me really, I am just adjusting things as I get suggestions and pm's!! ;D

Don't want to pour cold water on the idea, just maybe tweak it a little.  1st. nothing brings out idiots like competition, and I absolutely hate fishing when there are derby's or tournaments going on.  The competitors think they own the water.  2nd. If you don't have an official measuring station, honesty will become an issue.  3rd. if you're trying to catch and release, taking measurements only increases the handling and prolongs the release.

Kind of sounds lame, but it's the only alternative I could come up with.  How about a best photo competition.  Doesn't have to be with a fish, can be anything related to the event.

Does sound pretty good, except for the one about just a good picture...even without a fish.

Still looking for a partner :-\
Title: Re: Fishing with Rod Vedder River Spring Derby?
Post by: Big Steel on October 10, 2006, 08:18:49 PM
Thanks for the suggestions Bentrod.  But that is why it is a team comp.  The measurements would be taken while the fish is being revived, one person revives the fish while the other one takes measurements and a pic.  The fish never leaves the water other than for a trophy shot.  We all know that when Springs finally come to shore the co-operate with the handler pretty well, I don't see this as being an issue.  As for us being idiots, well I have fished with pretty much everyone that has showed interest and there are no idiots present.  I also feel that honesty will be a strong suit.  It takes 2 pics with a measuring tape as well, so again I don't think that honesty will be an issue.  These 2 pics can be taken in about may 20 seconds. Again, let me state this, without the fish leaving the water while it is being revived.
One more thing, half the money goes to a good cause.
I respect everyones opinion and feed back, and that is my opinion on the whole deal.  Besides, I figure that this is a better alternative than the "other Spring derby's" in the past!!! ;D

OK well, I wanted it this way because I didn't want killing of boot fish.  If someone brings a boot to the weigh-in station, that would suck and be a complete waste.  But if you guys want a weigh in station, than that is fine I guess.  I just know that if we kill like 20 big springs, how much of that is going to go to waste considering that the big ones taste like dirt ???

Sounds good. If you can bring him then the more the marrier.

On this weigh in thing, what do you guys want, a couple of pics with a tape measure, or a weigh in station?  Keep in mind, if you keep a fish to weigh in you are done.  If you take a couple pics, and gently release one, you can keep fishig and try for a bigger one.

Also I never said you couldn't keep your fish.  If you want to, that is fine.  But the measurements and the formula is pretty accurate.  That is why a quick pic of the length and girth would do just fine.  Then we just mark it down, bring a calculator and there you go, a quick easy winner.  I have a note book a calculator and a nice soft roll up measuring tape.  Which would be a must for this.  Just go to walmart or something, they are cheap.  One per team.  I would even go get enough for each team, along with pens and a small note pad for each team. :)

Good idea Lil Fishermen.  SO far we have:
Roekid and Fish Freak
Birdman and Dad?
IH8XC and Cronic Flosser?
Big Steel and Thick Rick

People with out definate partners:
Lil Fishermen
Shane
Dead Head
Coho Kid

Ones who would like to Volunteer if needed:
testo84

Not sure if we will need volunteers, depending on whether or not there is a weigh-in.  But it would be a good chance for some newer fishermen to tag along and learn a few tricks and meet some great people and I guess some ok fishermen.  ;D

Remember though, just a reminder.  The stop fishing time would be 11:30 so we could crash the Fundraisor and determine a winner, and give a donation to a good cause.  SO meet up would be at around 6 am at a designated spot.  Once everyone get's their Soft Flexi tape measures and note pads it is off to fishing area of your choice.  Then we meet at the fundraiser for 12:30 to compare notes and determine a winner.  That is how it will now go down. Sounds good to me, any other adjustments can be made.  No pics on the digital, fish doesn't count.  SO make sure that at least one person on the team has a camera.  I could loan mine out, as I know lot's of you gus have one.

So that makes 6 possible teams, and I see that Rick is getting whiney!! ;D ;D

OK so, there is some interest, that is good.  Because I have just picked up some more prizes for the occassion. Gone Fishin on 104 ave in Surrey has just donated a real nice camoe ball cap and a rather good looking fishing rod as well.  Thank you very much for that Rob, if you read this.  So now we have some money and prizes.
I was also thinking that since this is a team event, that it will be then team with the 2 biggest fish takes first.  Doesn't matter who on that team catches the fish.  I also now have the formula to get the accurate weight of the fish from measurements.  So in saying that, the rules for pics are, a length pic with the tape measurein the pic, and a girth pic with the tape measure in the pic.  You could also get a trophy shot as well if you choose.  The following are pics of fish that are acceptable. :)

this one is borderline but passable, any worse than this and please don't even bother to measure it, it will be disqualified. :)

This,
(http://www.fishingwithrod.com/albums/album23/Fish_on_11.jpg)
and this are also acceptable, but borderline.

Please, I am not kidding, there will be no arguement, if it is a total boot, DO NOT KILL IT, JUST LET IT GO.
One more thing, it now looks like I don't have a partner, so....... ;D

New Rule: Instead of taking more time to take 2 measurements (Length and Girth) the winner will be determined by total length of the 2 fish.  Much easier on th fish that way. So you just need one pic of the length with the tape measure in the pic.

One more thing, I also picked up some measuring tapes from the Fabric department at Walmart just in case some don't have them.  If you would like to pick one up for your self, they are about a $1.50!!  Good to have for future reference. ;)

Come on you forum readers, it will be a blast.  Remember have the prize money goes to a real good cause to help our rivers that we all use.  It is a win win for everyone.  Rookies get to learn and have a great time doing it and the Oldtimers get to have a blast showing some tricks to the newer fishermen.  There is a lot of talk about how to stop certain methods of fishing, and I for one would agree with many that the beat way to do this is by some kind words and instruction. Anyhow I don't want to flog a dead horse, so I will leave it at that.

Meeting place will be at the old Cafe that is in the process of being turn down just on the other side of the Vedder Crossing Bridge at 6:30 am.  The Fishing zone will be from Wilson Rd down to the fist turn in the River above the Keith Wilson Bridge.  Reason for this smaller section of River, most of the cleaner fish are in this section and I wanted to keep most of the meat holes out of the equation.
Remember, and I know I don't need to say this, but while on the river during the fishing time (6:30am till 12 noon) be respectful of those fishing around you and those around you will be respectfull of you.  This should be a fun event and everyone should be willing to help out where needed.
The meeting place after the fishing time has ended will be at the  Chilliwack Fish and Game Club House (48685 Chilliwack Lake Road).  At that point we will make the Donation of half the prize money, and after the weights have been calculated for each team and the photo evidence has been verified, winners will be declared.
If I have left anything out, please inform me of it and I will clarify.  Thanks. :)

Maybe I might tag along with you guys.  I don't want a partner but I usually have a few chuckles (at your expense, of course!) when I go with you.

That would be fine Merc, I am always willing to make others happy at my expense.  But it would be good if you could team up with a younger angler and show him the ropes so to speak.  Or you could team up with Rick and I could team with a younger fishermen and show you guys how it's done!! ;D

How about we pick up a fourth, young guy.  I usually drive out with TR, due to proximity.  What if we get ourselves a mini group going?  So, anyone else want in?

I have someone in mind for that!!  I am picking him up anyways!!  ;D Then we will meet you guys at the meeting spot!! (the old, in the process of being torn down cafe on the other side of the Vedder Crossing Bridge)  I have been on the phone tonight and I think I may have a couple others to come as well.  Hoping for a good turnout for a great cause, not to mention a chance to share with some newer fisherman how fishing should be done. ;)

I think that Birdman and Dad,
IH8XC and Cronic Flosser, and cohokid and his dad might be coming aswell.
If so, it looks like a pretty good turnout for a short plan :)

Birdman and his Dad can't make it, I don't know about IH8XC and Chronic just yet.

Don't forget about Frenchy. :)
That leaves Me, Lil Fishermen, Thick Rick, Merc, Roebaby, Fishfreak, Testo84(but I think that he may just be a camera man for someone, but he could fish if he likes)
Maybe Searun17 and Guppy.

Would be nice to have a couple more teams, I am working on it!! ;D

The more the merrier Nuggy.  We would love to have you out.  The derby rules are not set in stone yet.  It all depends on how many people show up at 6:30 at the meeting place. ( The old in the process of being torn down Cafe just on the other side of the Vedder Crossing Bridge.)  The only rule that stands right now is, there is no weigh-in per say.  The way we are determining a winner for a team is total length of the two biggest fish for a team.  Mind you, if you would rather have a regular like derby, every man for himself., as long as every one has help to measure there fish and take that all important verifying pic, that is ok as well.  Also, half the proceeds are going toward a donation later in the day at the fundraisor up river at Gun club.  When everyone is there in the morning, and please don't be late, we will have a chat and finalize the rules.  We will wait till about 6:45 at the latest, unless of course I am late!! ;D

Look about 2 posts down.  All the info is in the thread about 5 times over.   ;)

Well, as for it being a team thing, it is.  But was talking with some and they seem to like the everyman for temselves idea, as long as you still work as a team.  Help each other out and not just keep fishing.  That is the only way this would work, if people help out each other.  With it being an Every man for himself derby, it would be easier to distribute the prizes.  The Winner gets a choice of the Money or Rod, and second place takes what is left over, and Smallest Spring measured and verified by the Length pic gets  gets the hat!! ;D  I think that The Freak might be taking this one home again just like he did at the Barfing get together earlier this year!! ;D  What was that Spring, like 3 lbs? ;D
Well, tell me what you guys think of this? :)
Title: Re: Fishing with Rod Vedder River Spring Derby?
Post by: TrophyHunter on October 13, 2006, 11:47:49 AM
Yep every man for himself but we will fish in teams.. this way it doesn't matter how many people fish together .. just at the end of the day each fisherman will enter his own fish , this will work if we have odd numbers and it will make it easier to distribute the prizes

I was hoping it was a team thing. I usually avoid the Vedder due to crowds but I was hoping to fish with a member here for some company and to guide me a bit. I don`t care about the prizes so thats no biggie.

If it becomes an every fisher for himself deal i`m gonna bow out. I don`t know the river in the slightest and it`s not the situation I want to learn it in. I`m just going cause I want to meet people and fish with them...Don`t let me be your reason to go everyman for himself though.

Cheers

Title: Re: Fishing with Rod Vedder River Spring Derby?
Post by: Big Steel on October 13, 2006, 09:34:35 PM
Not sure, we'll have to see who shows up.  Then we will decide in the morning whether it will be a team competition or whether it will be an every man for himself derby, mind you with that the people you are fishing with are still expected to help out the one with the fish on so that the measurement can be tahen easily and the fish is not stresses to much before it's release.  We'll see what happens though, either way it is going to be a blast. ;D
So far, people that will be coming are:
Myself
ThickRick
Merc
Rick's buddy Hunter
Lil Fishermen
RoeKid
Testo84
Nuggy
Cohokid?
IH8XC?
Chronic Flosser?

I am not sure if I missed anyone, but there were a couple others that showed some interest.  I just haven't been able to get a hold of them. ;)
