Arrive at the stave river by 9am, hoping to catch some early chum or spring. to my surprise, that place was quiet as hell... WATER IS WAY TOO LOW, WAY TOO EARLY!!! couldn't see any sign of fish. Gave it a try anyways, for about half an hour, nothin' , so i left for Vedder. Got to the KWB at 10:30am, saw about 10 fishermen there. and u know what, the guy with red cap and sunglasses on who was BBing for sox last week, was doing the same there today!! So off i drove further down the river, to the spot right under highway 1 bridge. Met a guy who works for Fred's. A nice friendly fellow he was. we both drifted roe, to no avail. saw a tyee splashing and jumping right under the bridge often, but it just won't take our offerings. Rain started pouring around 1 and that guy left, i grabbed his spot and switched my gear to chucking spoon. On my first cast, i mean my FIRST cast, the jack took my green gibbs koho hard! a brief fight for about 2 minutes, and it was landed. :) i just got excited to learn it was a jack :-* there were also a few coho jacks holding right beside the bridge poles too, but it just won't take anything. didn't see any sign of chum yet though.
good luck fishing , guys, water is raising and the fish r really showing up now. it's time to drop the puck, and the hook~

Congrats on the jack, Thanks for the report sinarian

Not to piss on any ones parade but that fish looks pretty wierd to me...not quite coho, not quite chinook...all I can tell for sure is that the tail is missing the spots characteristic of a spring? I guess you would need to look at the gums in this case???
-
Gums are looking pretty black, probably stinks nicely like a spring too. Nice fish :)
-
nice fish Sinaran :)and great report, hope to get out myself this week somtime.
-
It is a jack spring for sure. Congrats.

I'm guessing it looks wierd because that picture looks to be taken at home. Which would mean the fish probably spent some time in a cooler or a bag.

I don't think you can kill wild coho jacks... That adipose is clearly visible...
Anyone want to contradict me?
Cheers,
Nicole

most definetly a jack spring. those spots are much too big to be a coho

wow that coho has HUGE spots biff, but in most chases jacks have those large spots, it looks like in the pic it also has black gums as well. that article is interesting, it says springs always have an adipose fin yet in the vedder ive caught big springs with no adipose fin and my bro got a nice red a few years ago in the fraser with no adipose fin...

yes ;D. i want to contradict because its a jack spring, not a coho ;D
nice fish btw sinaran ;) :D
oh and kingpin, i too have seen some springs caught in the vedder without an adipose.
-
Yeah im sure it looks kinda faded on the tail because it was been outa water for a while.
-
jack spring for sure nice fish bro ;)

No. You're correct! ;)
As for the photo of the fish, it looks like a spring - but the tail is lacking spots (indicative of a coho). Too bad we can't just take a "whiff" and see what the fish smells like. That would provide a pretty good indication! ;D ;D
-
since when did coho have black gums ???. like roe kid said, the tail is faded becasue the pic. was taken some time after he caught it because it looks like the photo was taken at home.

I've noticed that the tail spots on some springs are quite subtle. Anyway - that fish looks very much like a spring to me. Hey Sinran - did you get a good sniff? ;D :D Also - was it a red or a white?

FF was right that it was a white. i got a very good sniff on it and it almost turned me off. :P
there were some visible spots all over the tail when i landed it though, not sure what happened after staying in the ice-filled cooler for a few hours. I thought it was a wild coho at first too, but after checking it out and made sure it has black gum, i confirmed that football-shape salmonide was a spring. :)
-
i'd say white, but it just has that fishy look of a red jack ;D
-
I knew it was a white, i find the spots on a white spring are more bold looking and long looking, on a red spring the spots on there back are smaller and less bold, thats just me, thats how i knew it was a white
true ;)
-
definite white jack spring from the harrison strain as im fairly sure that where these spring where transplanted from years back

Siniarian I just had some dejavu today....first cast with a blade and a nice small coho on, except he never made it onto the beach :o
