Title: Line weight rod question
Post by: small_fish on September 15, 2006, 09:11:17 PM
Hey, I'm a newbie at fishing and im wondering if I get a shimano converance, medium, line weight 12-20 10'6. Can i fit it with 4 lb line and fish at local lakes? or does it just have to be 12-20lb line weight, and what is the best reel for this type of rod?

Thanks!

Yes, it does have to be 12 to 20lb. The rod would be too stiff for 4lb test. If you decide to try it out, the rod would not bend much before the line breaks (unless the fish is small of course).

This is the reason behind having different classes of rod, sizes of reel, lines. They are designed for different types and sizes of fish. You cannot compensate by using gear too light or too heavy for a specific type of fishing. It would cost you more in the long run and not as enjoyable.

Why not buy now and then you can get into the full salmon season starting in a couple of weeks? Infact there's a good deal in the used section for a good all round rod right here in the buy and sell section:

Small fish...if you are going to spend any money now, get salmon gear.  Trout season is pretty dead over the fall and winter I believe and this is when most salmon runs peak in their natal rivers.  The next 2 months really will be the best fishing to be had for a newbie so I would recomend you get a 10.5 rod sooner than later.
